Exploring dental students' knowledge on oral cancer prevention: a cross-sectional study in Moldova, Armenia, and Belarus.

BACKGROUND: Survival rate of patients with oral cancer (OC) remains to be very low despite advancements in therapy and surgical techniques. This is attributed to the fact that most OC cases are discovered at a late stage. Dentists play a vital role in early detection of OC through oral mucosal examination, and in informing the patients about avoidable risk factors of the disease, such as tobacco and excessive alcohol use. This study aimed at evaluating knowledge about OC among dental students in Moldova, Armenia and Belarus; three former soviet countries with high rates of tobacco use. METHOD

Determinants of self-rated health in women: a population-based study in Armavir Marz, Armenia, 2001 & 2004.

BACKGROUND: The former soviet Republic of Armenia entered a turbulent and long-lasting economic transition when it declared its independence in 1991. This analysis sought to identify the determinants of poor self-rated health as an indirect measure of health status and mortality prognosis in an adult female population during a period of socio-economic transition in Armenia. METHODS: Differences in self-rated health in women respondents were analyzed along three main dimensions: social, behavioral/attitudinal, and psychological. The data used were generated from cross-sectional household healt

Species- and elevation-linked variation in the molecular occurrence of tick-borne pathogens in Phylloscopus warblers breeding in Armenia.

Tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) are increasingly reported from migratory passerines, yet data from the South Caucasus remain limited. Warblers of the genus Phylloscopus differ in migratory strategies and elevational distributions, providing an opportunity to examine host-associated variation in the molecular occurrence of TBPs. We screened blood samples from three sympatric species (Phylloscopus collybita, Phylloscopus lorenzii, and Phylloscopus nitidus) breeding in Armenia for TBP DNA using genus-specific PCR and reverse line blot hybridization targeting Anaplasma/Ehrlichia/Neoehrlichia, Babesia/

Evaluation of road infrastructure in Yerevan, Armenia through the lens of pedestrian and child safety: a school-based analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Traffic-related injury is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, especially among children. In Armenia, traffic-related mortality rates are the second highest among European Union and former Soviet countries. Currently, there are no published studies on pedestrian safety in Armenia and no notable examinations of pedestrian safety infrastructure. This manuscript describes an audit of Armenia's infrastructure using a modified Inventory for Pedestrian Safety Infrastructure (IPSI) in the Yerevan city center, focusing on areas surrounding schools. METHODS: Intersections

Feeding practices of babies and the development of atopic dermatitis in children after 12 months of age in Armenia: is there a signal?

We investigated the influence of feeding practices on development of atopic dermatitis (AD) in Armenian children (n = 240). In multivariate models early introduction to solids, family history of atopy, and breastfeeding by a mother with atopic condition were associated with the development of AD after 12 months post-term. A prospective study in Armenia is recommended to confirm our findings.

Assessment of the infectious diseases surveillance system of the Republic of Armenia: an example of surveillance in the Republics of the former Soviet Union.

BACKGROUND: Before 1991, the infectious diseases surveillance systems (IDSS) of the former Soviet Union (FSU) were centrally planned in Moscow. The dissolution of the FSU resulted in economic stresses on public health infrastructure. At the request of seven FSU Ministries of Health, we performed assessments of the IDSS designed to guide reform. The assessment of the Armenian infectious diseases surveillance system (AIDSS) is presented here as a prototype. DISCUSSION: We performed qualitative assessments using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for evaluating surve

Serosurveillance and participatory disease surveillance of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) in Georgia and Armenia in 2019-2020.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a severe viral disease of small ruminants, endemic in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, and a WOAH and FAO target for eradication. In the last decade, PPR emerged in countries in the Caucasus and Europe. Georgia's first outbreak in 2016 led to multi-year vaccination campaigns in Georgia and neighbouring, PPR-free, Armenia. This was followed by serological surveillance campaigns in 2019-2020 in both countries. In addition, in 2019, participatory diseases surveillance including interviews and focus-group discussions were conducted in four provinces of Georgia

Ankylosing spondylitis: antiquity and differential diagnosis - a case study of a Bronze Age skeleton from Norabak, southeastern Armenia.

An excavation of a burial mound at Norabak site (Southeast Armenia) unearthed four burial chambers, the central one contained a single skeleton radiocarbon dated to about 1400-1200 BCE. The skeleton was observed to have a polyarticular erosive arthropathy, primarily affecting the spine, with diagnostic features of ankylosing spondylitis. The antiquity of ankylosing spondylitis is questioned in the literature, because there are few reliable and descriptive reports from prehistoric sites. Excellent preservation of the skeleton from Norabak made it possible to perform a detailed analysis of the p

Molecular survey of taeniid cestodes with special emphasis on Echinococcus species in free-roaming dogs and wild carnivores in Armenia.

Echinococcosis, caused by cestodes of the genus Echinococcus, poses significant public health and veterinary concerns globally. In Armenia, cystic echinococcosis (CE) is well-documented in livestock and humans, while alveolar echinococcosis (AE) has long been considered non-endemic. However, a recent retrospective study identified human AE cases, suggesting an underestimation of the parasite's presence. To address knowledge gaps, a pilot survey was conducted to identify Echinococcus species and other taeniids in free-roaming dogs and wild carnivores in Armenia. Fecal samples (n = 112) were opp
