Iron (Fe)-based groundwater treatment removes carcinogenic arsenic (As) effectively but generates toxic As-rich Fe oxide water treatment residuals (As WTRs) that must be managed appropriately to prevent environmental contamination. In this study, we apply life cycle assessment (LCA) to compare the toxicity impacts of four common As WTR disposal strategies that have different infrastructure requirements and waste control: (i) landfilling, (ii) brick stabilization, (iii) mixture with organic waste, and (iv) open disposal. The As disposal toxicity impacts (functional unit = 1.0 kg As) are compare

Inhibition of DNA repair processes has been suggested as one predominant mechanism in arsenic co-genotoxicity. However, the underlying mode of action responsible for DNA repair inhibition by arsenic remains elusive. To further elucidate the mechanism of repair inhibition by arsenic, we examined the effect of trivalent inorganic and methylated arsenic metabolites on the repair of benzo(a)pyrene diol epoxide (BPDE)-DNA adducts in normal human primary fibroblasts and their effect on repair-related protein expression. We observed that monomethylarsonous acid (MMA(III)) was the most potent inhibito

The environmentally prevalent arsenate (AsV) is reduced in the body to the much more toxic arsenite (AsIII). Recently, we have demonstrated that the glycolytic enzyme glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) catalyzes the reduction of AsV in the presence of glutathione, yet the role of GAPDH in AsV reduction in vivo is unknown. Therefore, we examined the effect of (S)-alpha-cholorhydrin (ACH), which forms a GAPDH-inhibitory metabolite, on the reduction of AsV in rats. These studies confirmed the in vitro role of GAPDH as an AsV reductase, inasmuch as 3 h after administration of ACH (10

Domkal is one of the 19, out of 26 blocks in Murshidabad district where groundwater contains arsenic above 0.05 mg/l. Many millions of cubic meters of groundwater along with arsenic and other heavy metals are coming out from both the hand tubewells, used by the villagers for their daily needs and shallow big diameter tubewells, installed for agricultural irrigation and depositing on soil throughout the year. So there is a possibility of soil contamination which can moreover affect the food chain, cultivated in this area. A somewhat detailed study was carried out, in both micro- and macrolevel,

Chronic inorganic arsenic (iAs) exposure affects > 220 million people worldwide and skin cancer is a hallmark of long-term iAs exposure. Limited information exists regarding arsenic methylation by human keratinocytes and how methylation influences skin carcinogenesis. Inorganic arsenite (iAsIII) and its methylated metabolites disrupt diverse zinc finger proteins, leading to differential toxicity patterns. We examined arsenic methylation capacity in non-malignant human keratinocytes and interrogated proteomic remodeling across three stages of iAsIII induced malignant transformation using the we

Gut microbiome can participate in arsenic metabolism. However, its efficacy in the host under arsenic stress is still controversial. To clarify their roles in fecal arsenic excretion, tissue arsenic accumulation, host physiological states and metabolism, in this study, ninety-six C57BL/6 male mice were randomly divided to four groups, groups A and B were given sterile water, and groups C and D were given the third generation of broad-spectrum antibiotic (ceftriaxone) to erase the background gut microbiome. Subsequently, groups B and D were subchronicly exposed to arsenic containing feed prepar

The effect of low-moderate levels of arsenic exposure and of arsenic metabolism on mortality remains uncertain. We used data from a prospective cohort study in 3600 men and women aged 45 to 75 years living in Arizona, Oklahoma, and North and South Dakota. The biomarker of inorganic arsenic exposure was the sum of urine inorganic (iAs), monomethylated (MMA) and dimethylated (DMA) arsenic compounds (ƩAs) at baseline. The proportions of urine iAs, MMA and DMA over the ƩiAs, expressed as iAs%, MMA%, and DMA%, respectively, were used as biomarkers of arsenic metabolism. Arsenic exposure and arsenic

The exposure and harm of arsenic have attracted wide attention. Rice is an arsenic-rich crop. The purpose of this study was to learn the distribution of arsenic species and the pathological changes in tissues of mice exposed to arsenic-supplemented food simulating rice. Test groups of mice were orally exposed with prepared arsenic feeds supplemented with four arsenic species (arsenite iAsIII, arsenate iAsV, monomethylarsonate MMA, and dimethylarsinate DMA) at three doses (total As concentration: 0.91, 9.1 and 30 μg/g), which simulated the arsenic species ratio in rice. After 112 days, the conc

Arsenic exposure route for humans is through the drinking of contaminated water and intake of arsenic-contaminated foods, particularly in arsenic-exposed areas of Bengal delta. Transport of the arsenic-contaminated crops and vegetables grown using arsenic-contaminated groundwater and soil in arsenic-exposed areas to the uncontaminated sites and consequent dietary intakes leads to great threats for the population residing in non-endemic areas with respect to consumption of arsenic through drinking water. We have studied the food materials collected from 30 families and their dietary habits, app

Applying iron (Fe) amendments to arsenic (As)-contaminated groundwater to form As-laden Fe precipitates represents a promising in situ remediation approach. However, less is known about the secondary risk of As mobilization due to formation of Fe-As colloids released from these precipitates. Here, we systematically explored the nanoscale formation, composition, and stability of Fe-As colloids in high-As contaminated groundwater following the addition of Fe salts under oxic conditions. Batch experiments show that total aqueous As is incorporated into settled particles upon adding Fe(II) and Fe(

Shallow (<30 m) reducing groundwater commonly contains abundant dissolved arsenic (As) in Bangladesh. We hypothesize that dissolved As in iron (Fe)-rich groundwater discharging to rivers is trapped onto Fe(III)-oxyhydroxides which precipitate in shallow riverbank sediments under the influence of tidal fluctuations. Therefore, the goal of this study is to compare the calculated mass of sediment-bound As that would be sequestered from dissolved groundwater As that discharges through riverbanks of the Meghna River to the observed mass of As trapped within riverbank sediments. To calculate groundw

In addition to naturally occurring arsenic, man-made arsenic-based compounds are other sources of arsenic exposure. In 2013, our group identified 12 suspected arsenicosis patients in a household (32 living members). Of them, eight members were diagnosed with skin cancer. Interestingly, all of these patients had lived in the household prior to 1989. An investigation revealed that approximately 2 tons of arsenic-based pesticides had been previously placed near a well that had supplied drinking water to the family from 1973 to 1989. The current arsenic level in the well water was 620 μg/L. No oth

The presence of the arsenic oxidation, reduction, and extrusion genes arsC, arrA, aioA, and acr3 was explored in a range of natural environments in northern Chile, with arsenic concentrations spanning six orders of magnitude. A combination of primers from the literature and newly designed primers were used to explore the presence of the arsC gene, coding for the reduction of As (V) to As (III) in one of the most common detoxification mechanisms. Enterobacterial related arsC genes appeared only in the environments with the lowest As concentration, while Firmicutes-like genes were present throug

Arsenic (As) contamination of drinking water is considered a serious worldwide environmental health threat that is associated with increased disease risks including skin, lung, bladder, and other cancers; type 2 diabetes; vascular and cardiovascular diseases; reproductive and developmental effects; and neurological and cognitive effects. Increased health risks may occur at as low as 10-50 ppb, while biological effects have been observed in experimental animal and cell culture systems at much lower levels. We previously reported that As is a potent endocrine disruptor, altering gene regulation

The behavior of arsenic during pyrolysis at temperatures between 135 and 500 degrees C has been widely studied. We examined the release of arsenic during the pyrolysis of chromated copper arsenate (CCA)-treated wood, and here we propose two models for the volatilization of arsenic: (a) a reacted arsenic compound, chromium arsenate, in CCA-treated wood was initially decomposed to arsenic pentoxide, which then appeared to be released at around 400-500 degrees C as a form of arsenic trioxide; and (b) an unreacted arsenic compound, arsenic pentoxide, in CCA-treated wood was released at much lower

Nineteen native fern species collected from an area in Thailand with high arsenic concentration in soil and in ground water as a result of tin mining was screened for elevated arsenic concentration in fronds. Two species of fern were found to contain elevated arsenic in their fronds in nature: Pityrogramma calomelanos (108-1156 microg g(-1) dried weight) and Pteris vittata (79 microg g(-1) dried weight). Under hydroponic culture Pityrogramma calomelanos (a silver back fern) accumulated arsenic in its shoot at rate of 4616 microg(-1) (dried weight). The accumulation of arsenic in Pityrogramma c

Infertility is a severe medical problem and is considered a serious global public health issue affecting a large proportion of humanity. Oxidative stress is one of the most crucial factors involved in infertility. Recent studies indicate that the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or reactive nitrogen species (RNS) may cause damage to the male and female reproductive systems leading to infertility. Low amounts of ROS and RNS are essential for the normal functioning of the male and female reproductive systems, such as sperm motility, acrosome reaction, interactions with oocytes, ov

The presence of arsenic in natural gas and liquid hydrocarbons is of great concern for oil companies. In addition to health risks due to its toxicity as well as environmental issues, arsenic is responsible for irreversible poisoning of catalysts and clogging of pipes via the accumulation of As-containing precipitates. To address these problems and to better design treatment units, robust methods for the analysis of arsenic and its compounds in oil streams are required. In addition, the use of feedstocks as a novel source of energy is becoming increasingly important. Most biomasses used as feed
