Spatial Configuration-Guided Design of Covalent Organic Framework-Based Artificial Metalloantioxidases for Inhibiting Inflammatory Cascades and Regulating Bone Homeostasis.

Intense oxidative stress in bone tissues can trigger the hyperactivation of neutrophils, thereby causing inflammatory cascades to deteriorate bone homeostasis. Here, inspired by the catalytic centers of natural antioxidases, we introduce the spatial configuration-guided design of covalent organic framework (COF)-based artificial metalloantioxidases for inhibiting inflammatory cascades and regulating bone homeostasis. Specifically, the hexaiminohexaazatrinaphthalene COF with ruthenium coordination (S-HACOF-Ru), featuring electron-rich centers with a spatial configuration, demonstrates exception

An Artificial Intelligence Olfactory-Based Diagnostic Model for Parkinson's Disease Using Volatile Organic Compounds from Ear Canal Secretions.

Parkinson's Disease (PD), a frequently diagnosed neurodegenerative condition, poses a major global challenge. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for PD treatment. This study proposes a diagnostic model for PD that analyzes volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from ear canal secretions (ECS). Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to examine ECS samples from patients, four VOC components (ethylbenzene, 4-ethyltoluene, pentanal, and 2-pentadecyl-1,3-dioxolane) were identified as biomarkers with statistically significant differences between PD and non-PD patients. Diagnostic mo

Altered Neuromuscular Time-Frequency Organization During Sit-to-Walk in Parkinson's Disease: An Explainable Artificial Intelligence Approach Using Surface Electromyography.

Neuromuscular dysfunction during the sit-to-walk (STW) task in Parkinson's disease (PD) remains poorly understood. We aimed to analyze surface electromyography (sEMG) signals across STW phases using explainable machine learning (ML) and deep learning approaches in PD. Individuals with PD (n = 101) and healthy controls (n = 50) performed a standardized STW task while sEMG signals were recorded bilaterally from eight lower-limb muscles. These signals were preprocessed and segmented into three phases in the STW task. Feature-based ML models were compared with convolutional neural networks (CNN) t

Machine-learning-assisted artificial olfactory colorimetric sensor array for bladder cancer early detection from urinary volatile organic compounds.

Bladder cancer (BC) remains difficult to detect non-invasively because current diagnostic methods are either invasive or insufficiently sensitive for early-stage disease. In this study, we developed a machine-learning-assisted artificial olfactory colorimetric sensor array (CSA) for urinary volatile organic compound (VOC)-based BC screening. The CSA was fabricated by integrating eight cross-reactive dyes into electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibrous membranes. The porous and hydrophobic PVDF matrix enabled uniform dye distribution, reduced humidity interference, and improved co

Combined optical and electrical control of a low-power consuming (∼fJ) two-terminal organic artificial synapse for associative learning and neuromorphic applications.

Optoelectronic synaptic devices outperform electrical synapses in speed, energy efficiency, and integration density. Recent progress in visual sensing and optogenetics has led to the integration of light-sensitive materials in these devices, promising unmatched speed, connectivity, and bandwidth. Here, we present a copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) based optoelectronic synaptic device boasting femto Joule power consumption stable at room temperature. The optoelectronic synapse can be operated with energy consumption as low as 430.4 fJ which is very attractive from the point of view of low-power neu

Diagnosis of Induced Resistance State in Tomato Using Artificial Neural Network Models Based on Supervised Self-Organizing Maps and Fluorescence Kinetics.

The aim of this study was to develop three supervised self-organizing map (SOM) models for the automatic recognition of a systemic resistance state in plants after application of a resistance inducer. The pathosystem Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici (FORL) + tomato was used. The inorganic, defense inducer, Acibenzolar-S-methyl (benzo-[1,2,3]-thiadiazole-7-carbothioic acid-S-methyl ester, ASM), reported to induce expression of defense genes in tomato, was applied to activate the defense mechanisms in the plant. A handheld fluorometer, FluorPen FP 100-MAX-LM by SCI, was used to asse

Covalent Organic Framework-Based Solid Phase Microextraction Coating for Rapid Screening and Quantification of Drugs of Abuse and Artificial Sweeteners in Surface Waters.

Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) has emerged as a powerful tool used for extracting analytes from complex matrices, offering high sensitivity, automation potential, and high-throughput efficiency. Despite its advantages, its performance is often limited by the selectivity and physicochemical properties of conventional coatings. This study addresses the limitations of conventional SPME coatings for monitoring environmental contaminants by introducing a nitrogen-rich covalent organic framework (COF) as an SPME extraction phase/coating. The COF-based SPME coating was implemented in a coated-bla

Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks (HOFs) for NADH Regeneration and Enzymatic Hydrogenation: HOF-in-HOF Artificial Photosynthetic System for Solar-to-Chemical Conversion.

The efficiency of artificial photosynthesis lies not only in the catalysts themselves, but also in the spatiotemporal landscape for efficient mass-energy coupling, which is governed by electron, proton, and molecule transfer. Herein, we propose a scaffold engineering strategy to construct an enzyme-photo-membrane coupled artificial photosynthetic system (epmCAPS) within HOF-in-HOF architecture for NADH regeneration and enzymatic hydrogenation, where enzyme-loaded HOF particles for substrate conversion are encapsulated within photocatalytic HOF capsular membranes for cofactor regeneration. Feasibility of artificial intelligence-driven interfractional monitoring of organ changes by mega-voltage computed tomography in intensity-modulated radiotherapy of prostate cancer.

PURPOSE: High-dose radiotherapy (RT) for localized prostate cancer requires careful consideration of target position changes and adjacent organs-at-risk (OARs), such as the rectum and bladder. Therefore, daily monitoring of target position and OAR changes is crucial in minimizing interfractional dosimetric uncertainties. For efficient monitoring of the internal condition of patients, we assessed the feasibility of an auto-segmentation of OARs on the daily acquired images, such as megavoltage computed tomography (MVCT), via a commercial artificial intelligence (AI)-based solution in this study.

Special feature: "current status and future development of organ preservation technology" novel techniques for assessing pulmonary function in cellular ex vivo lung perfusion: a republication of the review published in Japanese Journal of Artificial Organs.

Lung transplantation is the definitive therapy for end-stage respiratory diseases. To expand the donor lung pool, ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) has been developed for the assessment of marginal donor lungs. However, current evaluation methods remain limited. This study aimed to develop non-invasive imaging and monitoring techniques for the quantitative and early assessment of pulmonary function during EVLP. Three novel approaches were established: (1) lung thermography during the initial reperfusion period to assess pulmonary function, (2) optical oxygen saturation (SaO₂) imaging to assess pul

Design and Synthesis of an Indoloquinoxaline Non-Fullerene Acceptor-Polythiophene Donor-Based Double Cable Polymer as an All-Organic Photocatalyst for Artificial Photosynthesis of H2O2.

Excitons produced upon photoexcitation of organic semiconducting polymers (OSPs) are short lived, which limits their performance as photoactive materials. Exciton dissociation in OSPs can be enhanced by covalently conjugating them with acceptor species displaying higher electron affinity in a double cable polymer (DCP) arrangement, where non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) are emerging as attractive alternatives. Herein, we report a new all-organic DCP comprising an electron donor polythiophene (PTh) covalently conjugated to an indoloquinoxaline (IQx) NFA (PTh-IQx-DCP). The selection of PTh and IQx

Association between induced organ atrophy assessed by artificial intelligence-generated automatic segmentation and efficacy of bevacizumab in combination with chemotherapy in metastatic colorectal cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Bevacizumab, an angiogenesis inhibitor, is commonly used alongside chemotherapy for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCCR). While inducing necrosis in tumours, bevacizumab may also lead to atrophy in tumour-free organs. Artificial intelligence (AI) models offer user-friendly methods for measuring organ volumes. This study explores the relationship between bevacizumab-induced atrophy using AI-assisted volume measurement in tumour-free organs and treatment efficacy. METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study includes patients from the PRODIGE 9 and PRODIGE 20 trials. Organ atrophy
