PURPOSE: Optimal position of the posterior field border when irradiating early stage vocal cord cancer is controversial. Several experts recommend moving the posterior field border 5-15 mm anteriorly after 50-60 Gy to decrease the chance of arytenoid edema. This article will evaluate the effect of field position on arytenoid dose.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: 5 x 5 cm opposed lateral fields centered on the glottis were set up on a patient with typical anatomy. Isodose profiles were obtained with equally weighted 6 MV photon beams attenuated with 15 degree wedge filters using contours from an axial

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: A posterior glottic stenosis (PGS) may limit the abduction of the arytenoid cartilages. One option for the treatment of dyspnea in lower grade stenoses is endoscopic laterofixation of the vocal cords after scar excision. In our prospective study, we assess a refined method for effective endoscopic mobilization and lateropexy of the arytenoid cartilages.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Thirty-two consecutive patients with PGS underwent surgery. Endoscopically, the scar between the arytenoid cartilages was transected with a CO2 laser. The scars that had spread into the cricoary

This study describes the morphology of the laryngeal apparatus in bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) with respect to respiration, deglutition, and vocalization. We also examined the intrinsic cricoarytenothyroid muscle (Musculus (M.) diverticuli laryngei) which forms the laryngeal diverticulum, to ascertain its interactions with the laryngeal cartilages during respiration and sound production. Five fetal larynges and four from adult whales were studied using noninvasive imaging, as well as macroscopic and microscopic techniques. The larynx extends from the skull base into the thoracic inlet.

To demonstrate structural changes in the cricoarytenoid joint after recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, we performed a laboratory investigation of fixed arytenoid cartilages from adult humans obtained during laser surgical arytenoidectomy in cases of bilateral vocal fold paralysis, analyzing the articular cartilage, the joint capsule, and the attached laryngeal musculature. Ten arytenoid cartilages from adult humans were studied by means of histology, as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. After long-standing denervation (>6 months), all arytenoid cartilages showed degenera

OBJECTIVES: Intraoperative cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging has the potential to facilitate the surgical procedure. The current preliminary retrospective chart review investigated the benefits of intraoperative CBCT during laryngoplasty.
METHOD: This study examined 26 cases that underwent intraoperative CBCT imaging during laryngoplasty, with one patient who counted twice due to first and revision surgery. The visual quality of structures of interest (glottal shape, thyroid cartilage, arytenoid cartilage, and implants) was determined using intraoperative CBCT during laryngoplasty.

Low-voltage radiography of the neck was adjusted for visualisation of the crico-arytenoid joints. Sixty-four patients (48 males, 16 females) with laryngeal tumours were examined. The degree of ossification in the laryngeal cartilage around the crico-arytenoid joints was different in the males and the females. All males had ossification in the plate of the cricoid, and 94% in the arytenoids. The articular facets on the cricoid were visible in 94%, and on the arytenoid in 85%. All females had ossification in the arytenoids, and 94% in the plate of the cricoid. The articular facets on the aryteno

CASE DESCRIPTION: 3 racehorses were evaluated because of poor performance or abnormal noise originating from the upper portion of the respiratory tract.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: During maximal exercise, initial dynamic videoendoscopy of the upper respiratory tract revealed complete arytenoid cartilage abduction in 2 horses and incomplete but adequate abduction of the left arytenoid cartilage in 1 horse. Subsequent exercising endoscopic evaluation revealed severe dynamic collapse of the left arytenoid cartilage and vocal fold in all 3 horses.
TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: 2 horses were treated with prosth

REASONS FOR PERFORMING THE STUDY: Upper airway obstruction is a common problem in the performance horse as the soft tissues of the larynx collapse into the airway, yet there is a paucity of information on biomechanical properties for the structural cartilage components.
OBJECTIVE: To measure the geometry and compressive mechanical properties of the hyaline cartilage to improve understanding of laryngeal function and morphology.
METHODS: A total of 11 larynges were harvested from Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses. During gross dissection, linear dimensions of the cricoid were obtained.

The aim of this experimental study was to evaluate the effect of Translaryngeal Percutaneous Arytenoid Lateralization (TPAL) in dogs with experimentally created laryngeal paralysis. All dogs (n=5) underwent bilateral recurrent laryngeal neurectomy before TPAL. Two TPAL suture techniques were evaluated. TPAL-CranialCaudal (TPAL-CC) was performed first, followed 11 to 14days later by TPAL-DorsalVentral (TPAL-DV). For both techniques, a mattress suture was placed through the arytenoid cartilage via an oral approach. Laryngeal examination was performed before, immediately after, and on days 1, 3 a

UNLABELLED: Fiberoptic laryngoscopy is a standard procedure for evaluation of vocal folds immobility. However, this method is invasive, requires special qualifications and technical equipment, which limits its routine use. Therefore, in daily practice, the vast majority of laryngoscopy are performed by an indirect way, the accuracy of which depends on the specialist experience and the patient compliance. On the other hand, a large number of patients require for a convenient, non-invasive and inexpensive approach to assess the vocal folds mobility. The transcutaneous laryngeal ultrasonography c

19 laryngeal injuries are reported. 16 were secondary to orotracheal intubation and 3 were sequelae of gastroscopy, laryngoscopy and a nasogastric tube. In 6 patients, the trauma followed prolonged nasotracheal intubation, 10 cases followed a single endotracheal intubation. The main symptom was hoarseness. In 6 cases dislocation of an arytenoid cartilage was diagnosed, in 1 case a vocal cord paresis and in the other cases contusion or distortion of the arytenoid joint. In the cases of subluxation the arytenoid cartilage was dislocated posterolaterally, with the cord in the abducted position. F

OBJECTIVES: Bilateral laryngeal paralysis results in airway obstruction, but the voice is often nearly normal. Tracheotomy provides an airway and preserves voice. Surgical procedures to statically enlarge the glottis can permit decannulation, but do so at the expense of the voice. Motion analysis in cadaver larynges has demonstrated that adductor and abductor muscles rotate the arytenoid cartilage around different axes. We sought to determine whether external rotation of the arytenoid cartilage could enlarge the airway without abolishing residual phonatory adduction.
METHODS: We performed ary

Fourty one squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx, laryngeal margin and larynx were studied in order to compare the vocal cord and arytenoid mobilities with the tumoral extension to the intrinsic laryngeal muscles. Several whole organ sections were performed on the surgical specimen for studying specifically the lateral and posterior cricoarytenoid muscles, thyroarytenoid muscles and crico-arytenoid joint. The weight of the tumor located at the top of the arytenoid cartilage without any tumoral extension of the crico-arytenoid muscles can fix the arytenoid, preserving the vocal cord mobili
