Assay for the simultaneous detection of Raillietina spp. (R. echinobothrida, R. tetragona, and R. cesticillus) and Ascaridia galli infection in chickens using duplex loop-mediated isothermal amplification integrated with a lateral flow dipstick assay.

Raillietina species and Ascaridia galli are two of the significant intestinal parasites that affect chickens in a free-range system production. They destroy the intestinal mucosa layer, leading to several clinical symptoms such as weight loss, a slowed growth rate, and economic value loss. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop an assay for simultaneously detecting Raillietina spp. (R. echinobothrida, R. tetragona, and R. cesticillus) and A. galli in a single reaction using duplex loop-mediated isothermal amplification (dLAMP) coupled with a lateral flow dipstick (LFD) assay. The ana

Lack of correlation between parasite burden and key weight metrics in poultry infected with intestinal ascarids.

Ascaridia galli and Ascaridia dissimilis are the most common and economically impactful nematode parasites of commercial poultry. These infections rarely cause clinical disease, but reduction in feed conversion efficiency is detected. To determine if feed conversion efficiency reductions correlate with any physiological measures independent of clinical disease, we determined if ascarid infections correlate with changes in the weights of the small intestine, liver, or total animal weight (quantitative measures of animal health). No correlation between parasite burden and these metrics were obse

Larvae of Anisakidae in marine fish of coastal waters near Jakarta, Indonesia.

Three species of marine fish were collected from the waters around Seribu Islands, near Jakarta, Indonesia, and examined for nematode larvae of the family Anisakidae. Larvae were found in 719 (49%) of 1.459 Rastrelliger kanagurta, 445 (50%) of 884 Decapterus russelli, and 217 (41%) of 531 Sardinella sirm. Larvae from a subsample of 150 infected fish, 44 R. kanagurta, 86 D. russelli, and 20 S. sirm, were examined microscopically and only Anisakis type I and Terranova type B larvae were found. In all three species of fish the Anisakis larvae predominated. The Anisakis larvae found in these fish

PCR detection of Heterakis gallinarum in environmental samples.

Heterakis gallinarum is a widely distributed cecal nematode that parasitizes gallinaceous birds including chickens and turkeys. H. gallinarum infection poses a problem for the poultry industry as the nematode egg serves as a vector for the protozoan parasite, Histomonas meleagridis, the causative agent of histomonosis. The only means of detecting H. gallinarum in the environment is microscopic identification of the eggs in soil or feces; however, H. gallinarum eggs are often mistaken for those of Ascaridia galli. Three primer sets were designed from sequences cloned from the H. gallinarum geno

Prevalence and distribution pattern of intestinal helminths in chicken and pigeons in Aswan, Upper Egypt.

There is scarce data available on helminth infection of poultry in the region of Aswan province, Upper Egypt. A total of 276 poultry (156 baladi chickens and 120 domestic pigeons) were collected from different villages in Aswan province to screen the presence of intestinal helminths during the period from April 2016 to March 2017. The current investigation revealed that the overall prevalence was 55.79% (154/276). Additionally, 59.09% baladi chickens had mixed infections with four cestodes and three nematodes. Among cestodes, Raillietina tetragona was the most prevalent species (16.02%) follow

Interactions Between Parasites and the Bacterial Microbiota of Chickens.

Except for the important role coccidia have as predisposing factors of necrotic enteritis, the role parasites play in the dynamics of a healthy microbiota of chickens is not well explored. This review describes the interactions of relevant intestinal parasites of chickens with bacteria. Infection with Eimeria spp. favor the growth of Clostridium perfringens and suppress the growth of many other bacteria by increasing viscosity and passage time of the ingesta, and by causing lesions to the intestinal mucosa that improve the availability of nutrients for C. perfringens. Conversely, there are ind

[Acute abdomen due to massive intestinal ascaridiasis: a case report].

Ascaridiasis is a geohelminthiasis with a worldwide distribution, especially occurring in countries with hot-humid climates. The infection occurs most frequently in children between three and nine years of age. We report a case of ascaridiasis regarding a ten-year-old girl born in Bangladesh who arrived in Italy about one year before. During laparotomy for suspected acute appendicitis, a large number of ascaridia nematodes were seen in the small intestine.

Surveillance of gastrointestinal parasites in pheasants reared at farms and zoos in Japan: High prevalence of Eimeria species infection.

We morphologically examined 148 fecal samples of pheasants reared at farms and zoos in Japan by the sugar flotation method to evaluate infection with gastrointestinal parasites, including Eimeria species. Eimeria oocysts, Capillariid eggs, and Ascaridia/Heterakis eggs were detected in 76.2%, 49.0%, and 26.5%, respectively. These results suggest that these parasites seem to be widespread in pheasants in Japan.

Anisakis larval type I in fresh salmon.

Larval ascarid nematodes recently discovered in fresh salmon were identified as Anisakis larval Type I, this roundworm is the etiologic agent of anisakiasis, a parasitic disease characterized by eosinophilic granulomas affecting the human gastrointestinal tract. Infection may occur following ingestion of raw or poorly cooked fish. Patients generally present with an acute abdominal syndrome mimicking a wide variety of clinical conditions, thus creating a diagnostic dilemma. Intestinal parasites among migrant barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) in the central region of Mazandaran Province, Northern Iran.

AIM: Swallows are a family of migratory birds found worldwide except Antarctica. Annually, a number of species of swallows migrate to Iran. As they make their nests close to human living places, this may be a potential risk for public health. Conversely, no study has been conducted on intestinal parasitic infections of these birds so far. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in migratory swallows (Hirundo rustica) in the central region of Mazandaran Province, Northern Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 205 fece

The occurrence and localization in trypanosomes and other endo-parasites of an antigen cross-reacting with mitochondrial antibodies of primary biliary cirrhosis.

1. A mitochondrion-associated antigen to primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) in man has been shown by solid-phase radioimmunoassay and immunoautoradiography to occur in several parasitic protozoa (Trypanosoma, Plasmodium and Eimeria spp.) and in the helminths Ascaridia galli and Nippostrongylus brasiliensis. 2. Stercorarian trypanosomes and T. brucei procyclics, with more highly-developed mitochondria, appear to contain more PBC antigen than the salivarian trypomastigote, in accordance with the known mitochondrial association of the antigen. 3. Trypanosoma lewisi and A. galli gave consistently hig

Occurrence of Eimeria spp. and Intestinal Helminths in Free-Range Chickens from Northwest and Central Romania.

Chickens raised in backyard free-range systems are confronted with a significant threat of parasitic infections. Among the parasitic agents, protozoa belonging to the genus Eimeria and helminths, including Ascaridia galli, Capillaria spp., Heterakis gallinarum, and Strongyloides avium, stand out as the most prevalent. The sampling protocol included sixteen localities in four counties within the Transylvania region of Romania. Fecal samples were collected from chickens reared in a backyard system. Fecal samples were screened for oocysts (O) and eggs (E) by flotation method, and their number per

Gastrointestinal parasites in captive and free-living wild birds in Goiania Zoo.

Helminths are endoparasites that infect a variety of bird species. Endoparasite infections can cause severe diseases, including kill captive avian hosts and represents a problem to maintenance and conservation. The eggs and larval forms of these parasites are usually eliminated in the host feces. The main interest of this study is to report the occurrence of eggs and oocysts in feces from captive wild birds in Goiânia Zoo and free-living birds in its surroundings. The fecal samples were subjected to parasitological examination to identify the presence of helminths and to classify their eggs ba
