Reassessing the nutrition policy landscape: Mapping nutrition policies and analysing malnutrition burdens in selected South Asian countries.

Malnutrition is an extensive and complicated public health issue experienced by countries across South Asia that affects millions of lives and impedes the socioeconomic progress of nations. Despite decades of policies, programs, and interventions the region continues to suffer from high rates of undernutrition, overweight, obesity, and micronutrient deficiencies, as well as maternal and child malnutrition. In this article we examine the impact of malnutrition in South Asia through the public policy lens, with an emphasis on policy formulation and the evaluation of implementation constraints. B

Adaptation Process of a Culturally Tailored Smoking Cessation Intervention for People Living With Severe Mental Illness in South Asia: IMPACT 4S.

INTRODUCTION: Despite high smoking prevalence in people from low- and middle-income countries living with severe mental illness (SMI), smoking cessation interventions adapted for this population and context are lacking. This article describes the adaptation process of a smoking cessation intervention for people living with SMI in South Asia. METHODS: The adaptation process followed the first nine steps of the Escoffery framework for adapting health interventions, complemented by the Stirman adaptation classification to document the modifications. This was conducted by an interdisciplinary cod

Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 10 with Atypical Clinical Manifestation in Han Chinese.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 10 (SCA10) is an autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia accompanied by extracerebellar signs and other neurological disorders. It is caused by an expansion of the ATTCT pentanucleotide repeat in intron 9 of ATXN10. Cases of SCA10, formerly confined to America, have been reported in Europe and Asia. In the present study, we aim to report an atypical SCA10 family in China and provide a reference for the diagnosis of SCA10 in Asia by comparing their clinical and genetic features with former SCA10 pedigrees. Genomic DNA was extracted from patients and subjected to RP-PCR

Parasitism by Placobdella multilineata (Hirudinoidea: Glossiphoniidae) and its first record from Asia.

Placobdella multilineata (Hirudinoidea: Glossiphoniidae) a temporary, bloodsucking ectoparasite, was previously recorded only from the southern United States, with turtles and the American alligator (Alligator mississipiensis) as hosts. This is the first record of P. multilineata from Asia (Beijing, People's Republic of China) and also a new host record for the estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus). The introduction of P. multilineata to Asia occurred as a result of the transfer of American alligators. All 34 specimens of P. multilineata collected in Beijing were non-clitellate but blood in

Canine Babesiosis Caused by Large Babesia Species: Global Prevalence and Risk Factors-A Review.

Canine babesiosis is a disease caused by protozoan pathogens belonging to the genus Babesia. Four species of large Babesia cause canine babesiosis (B. canis, B. rossi, B. vogeli, and the informally named B. coco). Although canine babesiosis has a worldwide distribution, different species occur in specific regions: B. rossi in sub-Saharan Africa, B. canis in Europe and Asia, and B. coco in the Eastern Atlantic United States, while B. vogeli occurs in Africa, southern parts of Europe and Asia, northern Australia, southern regions of North America, and in South America. B. vogeli is the most prev

Cancer incidence in migrants to New South Wales.

Cancer incidence in migrants to New South Wales (NSW) from the British Isles, north-central, eastern and southern Europe, the Middle East and Asia has been compared with that in Australian-born residents using data from the NSW Central Cancer Registry for 1972-84. Indirectly standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were low in migrants from all 6 regions for melanoma of skin and cancers of lip and, except in men from eastern Europe, colon. Oesophageal, rectal and prostatic cancers also tended to be relatively less common. Cancers which were more common than in the Australian-born were those of the

Mortality Projections, Regional Disparities in the Burden of Neonatal Disorders, and the Status of Achieving SDG Targets by 2030 in South Asia: Insights from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal disorders represent a significant public health challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where they account for 79% of global neonatal mortality. South Asia, comprising countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan, bears a disproportionately high burden, contributing to 38% of the world's neonatal deaths. Despite notable progress, South Asia remains off track in meeting the Sustainable development goals (SDG). This study aims to assess the current burden, trends in neonatal disorders, and forecast mortality rates across South Asian c

Burden of chronic respiratory disease in Asia, 1990-2023: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Chronic respiratory diseases are an important global issue, particularly in Asia, where burden patterns vary widely across countries. With more than half the world's population living in Asia, understanding the national and regional burden of chronic respiratory diseases is essential; however, research on this area remains inadequate. We aimed to investigate the burden of chronic respiratory diseases in Asia at national and regional levels, and to identify key risk factors. METHODS: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2023 provides estimates for assessi

Fatal outbreaks of jaundice in pregnancy and the epidemic history of hepatitis E.

Space-time clustering of people who fall acutely ill with jaundice, then slip into coma and death, is an alarming phenomenon, more markedly so when the victims are mostly or exclusively pregnant. Documentation of the peculiar, fatal predisposition of pregnant women during outbreaks of jaundice identifies hepatitis E and enables construction of its epidemic history. Between the last decade of the 18th century and the early decades of the 20th century, hepatitis E-like outbreaks were reported mainly from Western Europe and several of its colonies. During the latter half of the 20th century, repo

Genetic ancestry of the Mulam ethnic group: admixture from ancient Yellow River, southern native, and Austronesian populations.

The Mulam people, an ethnic minority group native to southern China, primarily inhabit the Guangxi region. Systematic whole-genome studies on the Mulam population remain limited. In this study, we analyzed genome-wide genotyping data comprising over 700,000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) derived from 107 saliva samples of Mulam individuals in Guangxi, to investigate their genetic origins and relationships with other southern East Asian populations. Based on ancestry inference and population genetic analysis, we identified three major ancestral components in the Mulam genome: ancient Ye

From MPOWER to S-POWER: adapting tobacco-control frameworks for sugar-sweetened beverage regulation in South Asia.

Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption is increasing across South Asia, alongside a growing burden of diet-related non-communicable diseases. Although countries in the region have introduced measures including taxation, nutrition labelling and restrictions in institutional settings, policies remain fragmented and implementation is uneven. Drawing on lessons from tobacco control, we propose Surveil, Protect, Offer, Warn, Enforce, and Raise (S-POWER) as an implementation framework to strengthen SSB regulation in South Asia. S-POWER brings together six complementary policy domains: surveillan

Gnathostomiasis, another emerging imported disease.

Gnathostomiasis is a food-borne zoonosis caused by the late-third stage larvae of Gnathostoma spp. It is being seen with increasing frequency in countries where it is not endemic and should be regarded as another emerging imported disease. Previously, its foci of endemicity have been confined to Southeast Asia and Central and South America, but its geographical boundaries appear to be increasing, with recent reports of infection in tourists returning from southern Africa. It has a complex life cycle involving at least two intermediate hosts, with humans being accidental hosts in which the larv

Genetic diversity patterns across habitats and forms of a morphologically cryptic South Asian frog (Sphaerotheca maskeyi).

BACKGROUND: Sphaerotheca maskeyi (Dicroglossidae) is a medium-sized South Asian frog. It is of conservation concern due to its global declining population trend. This study aimed to (1) determine the phylogenetic placement of S. maskeyi, (2) assess genetic variation across contrasting habitat types (natural vs. degraded), and (3) compare genetic diversity between two distinct morphotypes (dotted and rusty forms) by using mitochondrial (16 S rRNA) and nuclear (RAG-1) gene markers. METHODS AND RESULTS: Phylogenetic analyses using both Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian inference consistently place
