Late lactation is frequently accompanied by changes in goat milk composition and volatile-related quality, which may reduce its commercial value. This study investigated whether Astragalus polysaccharide (APS), a plant-derived bioactive polysaccharide from Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bunge, is associated with milk quality responses distinct from those induced by probiotic supplementation. Late lactation Saanen dairy goats were assigned to probiotic or APS supplementation for 30 days, and milk samples were analyzed using conventional composition testing, electronic nose (E-nose) profiling,

Dried Astragalus glycyphylos L roots and areal parts (leaves, collected at different vegetation phases) were successively extracted with supercritical carbon dioxide (SFE-CO2) at 15 and 45 MPa pressures and increasing polarity pressurised liquids (PLE with acetone, ethanol, and water) for the recovery of two lipophilic and three higher polarity fractions. The yield of lipophilic substances was low and varied with applied pressure, plant part, and growth period. PLE obtained the highest yields with water, followed by ethanol and acetone. The antioxidant capacity of the extracts and solids was e

Powdery mildew is one of the major diseases affecting Astragalus membranaceus var. mongholicus (Bunge) P. K. Hsiao (Am), yet the molecular mechanisms underlying its defense response to this pathogen remain unclear. To identify candidate genes and differential biomarkers involved in resistance to powdery mildew, we used a highly resistant Am germplasm (202302006) selected from previous studies. After natural disease inoculation in the field, transcriptomic and metabolomic sequencing were performed. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) in roots

Astragalus lusitanicus is a toxic legume grown in Morocco and in some other Mediterranean countries. In small ruminants, poisoning by this plant is dominated by nervous signs characterized by many cycles of excitement-depression. Macroscopic examination of poisoned animals showed congestive lesions and oedema in the brain and lungs. Microscopic lesions consisted mainly of vacuolar degeneration in neurons, hepatocytes and in spleen and kidney cells. Serum activity of AST and CK as well as blood glucose and urea were increased as a result of poisoning. However, serum activity of alpha-mannosidas

The effect of endophytic fungal biotransformation on the formation of metabolic substances has become a non-negligible factor in assessing the quality of medicinal plants. However, the relevant evidences are still particularly lacking. In this study, an endophytic fungus CA3-A with biotransformation activity was screened and identified as Talaromyces coprophilus from root of Astragalus mongholicus. Its biotransformation effect on host metabolism was studied by co-culture with fungus and host root. The results showed that in addition to the significant changes in primary metabolites, secondary

Biotic stress reduces crop quality and yield, adversely affecting agricultural and forestry production and ecosystems. Plant-beneficial endophytes offer a promising approach to mitigating such stress. This study developed a novel multi-strain biocontrol agent comprising Streptomyces dioscori SF1 and Bacillus cereus G2, designated as SF1+G2. SF1+G2 exhibited potent antifungal activity against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Rhizoctonia solani, and Fusarium oxysporum, achieving inhibition rates of 72.69 ± 2.81%, 68.29 ± 1.61%, and 63.02 ± 0.45%, respectively, through the production of volatile compoun

Macrophage functional states are increasingly viewed as a dynamic spectrum rather than a fixed M1/M2 dichotomy. Astragalus polysaccharides (APS) are structurally heterogeneous natural polysaccharides with reported immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor and tissue-repair activities; however, their structure-activity relationships, receptor-recognition mechanisms and translational readiness remain incompletely defined. This review summarizes mechanistic and translational evidence for APS-mediated regulation of macrophage functional states, with emphasis on structural heterog

Aging is associated with a rising burden of chronic metabolic, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and neurodegenerative diseases that share interconnected pathological mechanisms, including oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, metabolic imbalance, and immune dysregulation. Because these disorders arise from complex and overlapping biological disturbances, conventional single-target therapies often provide only limited benefit. In this context, traditional Chinese herbal medicines, characterized by multi-component and multi-target actions, are being re-evaluated usin

The rapidly ageing global population has led to an increasingly severe prevalence of dysphagia and associated malnutrition, necessitating the development of innovative foods that integrate appropriate texture with high nutritional density. This study aims to develop high-internal-phase Pickering emulsions (HIPPEs) stabilized by a ternary covalent complex of lactoferrin (LF) - vanillic acid (VA) - Astragalus polysaccharide (APS), aiming to concurrently enhance the bioaccessibility and cellular uptake efficiency of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), while exploring their potential in 3D-printed dysphag

BACKGROUND: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a severe and irreversible heart disease characterized by dilated ventricles and decreased myocardial function. DCM has a poor prognosis and a very low survival rate, with a 5-year mortality rate ranging from 15 to 50%, and is an important cause of sudden cardiac death and heart failure. Genetic factors play important roles in the pathogenesis of DCM. Mutations in the cardiac troponin T (tnnt2) gene represent an important subset of known pathogenic variants that bind to DCM. However, few specific drugs are currently available to treat DCM caused by th

This study aimed to optimize the extraction of flavonoids from the stem and leaf waste of Astragalus membranaceus (AMW) using nonionic surfactant-integrated ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE). Genapol X-080 was identified as the most effective surfactant for flavonoid extraction. UAE outperformed both stirring-assisted and heating methods in terms of yield. A sustainability analysis showed that UAE with nonionic surfactants was environmentally favorable, scoring 0.78 in the Analytical Greenness Calculator. The extraction process was optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM), startin

Astragalus membranaceus stems and leaves (AMSL), the aerial parts of the plant Astragalus membranaceus, are produced in large quantities annually but remain underutilized. AMSL contain active components such as flavonoids, saponins, and polysaccharides, as well as nutrients such as amino acids and minerals, indicating potential applications in animal husbandry. However, it remains unclear whether AMSL supplementation in animal feed is accompanied by alterations in endogenous metabolites and the gut microbiota. In this study, broilers were fed a basal diet supplemented with varying concentratio

Climate change negatively affects mountainous plants and leads to their range contraction or extinction. Cushion plants are the essential components of mountainous ecosystems. Although cushions represent the dominant vegetation form of the mountains of the Irano-Anatolian Biodiversity Hotspot, the impacts of climate change on these plants have been merely studied. The present study investigates the effects of climate change on the distribution of endemic cushion species in the Khorassan-Kopet Dagh (KK) floristic province, the eastern-most part of the Irano-Anatolian Biodiversity Hotspot. Soil salinization severely constrains the productivity of leguminous forages, but the regulatory mechanisms of salt acclimation in Astragalus cicer remain unclear. Here, we investigated the ABA-dependent salt tolerance network in this species through integrated physiological, biochemical, and transcriptomic analyses under controlled stress conditions, including salt treatment, exogenous ABA supplementation, and chemical inhibition of endogenous ABA synthesis. Our results show that exogenous ABA effectively mitigates salt-induced growth inhibition, enhances antioxidant capacity, preserves photo
