Analysis of injuries in taekwondo athletes.

[Purpose] The present study aims to provide fundamental information on injuries in taekwondo by investigating the categories of injuries that occur in taekwondo and determining the locations of these injuries. [Subjects and Methods] The data of 512 taekwondo athletes were collected. The sampling method was convenience sampling along with non-probability sampling extraction methods. Questionnaire forms were used to obtain the data. [Results] The foot, knee, ankle, thigh, and head were most frequently injured while practicing taekwondo, and contusions, strains, and sprains were the main injuries

Ear problems and injuries in athletes.

The ear is an unique organ--the principal structure involved in both hearing and balance. Although not common, problems with the ear may be encountered in specific sporting populations. Common conditions affecting the ear in the athlete include otitis externa, an infection of the external ear; external auditory canal exostoses, or abnormal bony growths in the canal; and otitis media, an infection of the middle ear. Given its position on the head, the ear is subject to trauma, often resulting in an auricular hematoma. Divers, due to pressure changes on descent and ascent, are subject to both ea

[Injuries of the acromioclavicular joint in athletes].

Acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) dislocation is a common injury to the shoulder girdle, especially in contact and high velocity sports. Besides the severity of the injury, and particularly in competitive and elite athletes and the type of sports, individual career plans and in and out of season injuries have to be taken into account when advising treatment for athletes. Conservative treatment is reserved for low-grade dislocations and in-season athletes. The aim is fast pain relief and a safe return to competitive sport. High-grade ACJ dislocations in athletes should be treated surgically. Arthro

Knee injuries in the young athlete.

The rate and severity of knee injuries in the pediatric population are on the rise. In addition to more generalized knee injuries, the pediatric knee is at risk for unique injuries secondary to the rapid growth and biomechanical properties of the pediatric skeleton. Given the common nature of knee injuries, the pediatrician must be aware of these injury patterns and possess the skills to effectively evaluate the pediatric knee. This article will discuss several of the most common pediatric knee injuries.

Exercise and airway injury in athletes.

Olympic level athletes present an increased risk for asthma and allergy, especially those who take part in endurance sports, such as swimming or running, and in winter sports. Classical postulated mechanisms behind EIA include the osmotic, or airway-drying, hypothesis. Hyperventilation leads to evaporation of water and the airway surface liquid becomes hyperosmolar, providing a stimulus for water to move from any cell nearby, which results in the shrinkage of cells and the consequent release of inflammatory mediators that cause airway smooth muscle contraction. But the exercise-induced asthma/

[Imaging of wrist injuries in athletes].

Wrist imaging is currently used for diagnosis of sport injuries as part of a global strategy of rapid recovery. Standard x-rays are the first step in this procedure. Although arthrography is still the reference for the diagnosis of intrinsic ligament and cartilaginous lesions, MRI can sometimes be sufficient. Ultrasonography is a dynamic process and is accurate in detecting tendon injuries. Wrist sport injuries are frequent and often asymptomatic. Here we review the usual aspects of bone, ligament, and tendon lesions encountered in each sport, while providing advice on the most appropriate ima

Overuse injuries in female athletes.

The last three decades have witnessed a tremendous increase in female sports participation at all levels. However, increased sports participation of female athletes has also increased the incidence of sport-related injuries, which can be either acute trauma or overuse injuries. Overuse injuries may be defined as an imbalance caused by overly intensive training and inadequate recovery, which subsequently leads to a breakdown in tissue reparative mechanisms. This article will review the most frequent overuse injuries in female athletes in the context of anatomical, physiological, and psychologic

Injuries of the fingers and thumb in the athlete.

Injuries of the fingers and thumb in the athlete are common. Mallet finger, jersey finger, boutonniere deformity, Bennett and Rolando fractures, and gamekeeper's thumb are just a few of the injuries that can occur in athletes. A thorough understanding of the mechanism of injury, osseous and soft tissue abnormalities, imaging features, and treatment is important in the care of athletes. Prompt and accurate diagnosis is important and may help minimize outcomes of malunion, posttraumatic arthritis, and debility.

Lumbar spine injuries in athletes.

Lumbar spine injuries in athletes are not uncommon and usually take the form of a mild muscle strain or sprain. More severe injuries sustained by athletes include disc herniations, spondylolistheses, and various types of fracture. The recognition and management of these injuries in athletes involve the additional consideration that to return to play, the lumbar spine must be able to withstand forces similar to those that were injurious. The authors consider common lumbar spine injuries in athletes and discuss management principles for neurosurgeons that are relevant to this population.

Overuse injuries in pediatric athletes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The number of children participating in sports has risen steadily over the past few decades. As a result, the incidence of pediatric overuse injuries is rapidly increasing. Currently, primary care physicians are at the frontline in treating these injuries. It is important for these clinicians to be familiar with these types of injuries and their treatment options. RECENT FINDINGS: This article reviews overuse injuries on the basis of location. It discusses the most recent literature describing their presentations, their treatment options, and suggested criteria for return t

Overview of injuries in the young athlete.

It is estimated that 30 million children in the US participate in organised sports programmes. As more and more children participate in sports and recreational activities, there has been an increase in acute and overuse injuries. Emergency department visits are highest among the school-age to young adult population. Over one-third of school-age children will sustain an injury severe enough to be treated by a doctor or nurse. The yearly costs have been estimated to be as high as 1.8 billion US dollars. There are physical and physiological differences between children and adults that may cause c

Hip and groin injuries in athletes.

Although athletic injuries about the hip and groin occur less commonly than injuries in the extremities, they can result in extensive rehabilitation time. Thus, an accurate diagnosis and well-organized treatment plan are critical. Because loads of up to eight times body weight have been demonstrated in the hip joint during jogging, presumably even greater loads can occur during vigorous athletic competition. The available imaging modalities are effective diagnostic tools when selected on the basis of a thorough history and physical examination. Considerable controversy exists as to the cause a

Neurologic Injuries in the Athlete's Shoulder.

OBJECTIVE: To review the presentation, evaluation, treatment, and prognosis of various nerve injuries about the shoulder in the athletic population. Included are injuries to the axillary, suprascapular, musculocutaneous, long thoracic, and spinal accessory nerves. DATA SOURCES: This article represents a review of the literature regarding incidence, presentation, and results of treatment of these various nerve injuries. The clinically pertinent anatomy is also presented to better relate mechanism of injury to the occurrence of nerve injury. I searched MEDLINE from 1966 through 1999 and the Jou

Back injuries in the young athlete.

The diagnosis of back pain in the young athlete should be specific and not attributed to nonspecific, mechanical causes. Risk factor identification and intervention are required. Treatment is then initiated in a specific pattern, addressing flexibility and muscular imbalances. Bracing is often used to allow healing of growth tissue. The lumbosacral orthosis may be molded in a lordotic posture to unload the disc or antilordotic posture to relieve the posterior column; however, customizing the lordosis to the individual biomechanics may be required. Spinal stabilization is initiated with therapy

Ankle injuries in the young athlete.

Ankle injuries in the young athlete are quite different from those of an adult. Because the epiphyseal plates of the distal tibia and fibula are significantly weaker than surrounding ligaments, failure on stress occurs through the growth plates rather than through soft tissue. Growth-plate injuries can assume a distinct pattern based on the maturity of the physis. Leg length inequality and angular deformity are potential sequelae from significant injury to the ankle in the skeletally immature but, fortunately, occur infrequently. Soft-tissue injuries about the ankle are rare, but with advanced

Overuse injuries in the young athlete.

Overuse injuries are now well known to sports enthusiasts at any age or level of competition. The seeming explosion of overuse stress fractures of lower extremity bones in high-profile professional basketball players has brought about widespread media attention and a better understanding of the phenomenon of "overuse syndrome" by the public. However, the spectrum of overuse injuries in the child or adolescent athlete has only recently been recognized. These injuries can range from the permanent disability of osteochondritis dissecans of the elbow to the completely nonspecific "growing pains" o

Common hand injuries in the athlete.

Common injuries to the hand and wrist of athletes have been discussed under the headings of ligament injuries, fractures, tendon injuries, and neurovascular injuries. Although the frequency and mechanisms of certain injuries may be different in the athlete than in the nonathlete, the principles of proper early diagnosis and adequate treatment are the same whether the patient is an athlete or not.

Injuries to the ankle and foot in athletics.

Accurate diagnosis in ligament and ligament-bone injuries of the foot and ankle demands a knowledge of the anatomy and mechanics of the foot and ankle, a good history of the mechanism of injury, clinical examination including fingertip palpation and assessment of stability, and adequate x-ray studies, perferably in the deformed position, with stress films and arthrograms in selected cases. By making an accurate diagnosis, early proper treatment is instituted, the athlete is restored to health sooner, and, almost as important, the athlete and the coach get a more realistic prognosis regarding t
