A Survey of Sports Concussion Specialists' Clinical Criteria to Determine Concussion Recovery.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to identify criteria used by sports concussion specialists in determining recovery from sport-related concussion. We hypothesized differences in decision-making criteria among three specialist groups, neuropsychologists, physicians, and certified athletic trainers (ATCs), for youth athletes and young adult/adult athletes. METHOD: We surveyed 156 sports concussion specialists (neuropsychologists = 46, physicians = 42, and ATCs = 68) who rated the importance of specific criteria for determining concussion recovery in youth and young adult/adult athletes. Differences between

Management of carpal instability in athletes.

Hand and wrist injuries are common in most athletic events and sports. Carpal fractures and ligamentous injuries are common in athletes and require physicians, trainers, and therapists who treat and diagnosis these injuries to have an understanding of the carpal bone anatomy and vascularity along with the potential for progression to instability. Research is still needed to further investigate the optimal treatments of all carpal injuries in athletes along with designing new means to prevent these injuries.

The Identification and Treatment of Common Skin Infections.

Skin conditions are a common problem addressed by medical providers. Up to 25% of individuals in the United States will seek attention for these conditions each year. The same problem occurs in the athletic training room, where athletes with infectious skin conditions can be seen. Most conditions are simple and can be treated without concern for spread to susceptible athletes. However, others can be quite serious and spread rapidly through a team and opponents during competition. Knowledge of the different types of skin infections is necessary to help treat these athletes and prevent spread to

Presumed testicular rupture during a college baseball game: a case report and review of the literature for on-field recognition and management.

Scrotal rupture during athletic competition is considered a rare occurrence; however, blunt trauma to the scrotum is relatively common. Protective athletic cups are strongly recommended for both children and adults engaging in contact sports as they likely limit the amount of serious injury to the scrotal contents. Nonetheless, should the on-field assessment by the athletic trainer, coach, or team physician indicate that the athlete has increased pain, ecchymosis, swelling, and tenderness to palpation after blunt trauma, testicular rupture should be suspected and prompt ultrasound and urologic

Rehabilitation following turf toe injury and plantar plate repair.

The evaluation and diagnosis of turf toe injuries is improving as it becomes a more recognized pattern of injury to the hallux metatarsophalangeal joint. With an understanding of the anatomy of the injury and the ability to focus on important diagnostic and radiographic clues, turf toe can be diagnosed, assessed, and treated accurately, with surgical repair when indicated. Regardless of the grade of injury, rehabilitation of the athlete under the guidance of a physical therapist or athletic trainer is critical to complete recovery. With appropriate care, athletes can successfully return to pla
