Direct comparison of 210Po, 234Th and POC particle-size distributions and export fluxes at the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) site.

Particle-reactive, naturally occurring radionuclides are useful tracers of the sinking flux of organic matter from the surface to the deep ocean. Since the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) began in 1987, the disequilibrium between (234)Th and its parent (238)U has become widely used as a technique to measure particle export fluxes from surface ocean waters. Another radionuclide pair, (210)Po and (210)Pb, can be used for the same purpose but has not been as widely adopted due to difficulty with accurately constraining the (210)Po/(210)Pb radiochemical balance in the ocean and because of th

Diet composition of data-limited marlins (Istiophoridae) in the Northwest Atlantic.

Knowledge of the dietary composition of Atlantic marlins, especially for recently acknowledged species such as roundscale spearfish (Tetrapturus georgii), is limited, as sample access is constrained by international quotas and intermittent landing rates. A series of annual offshore recreational fishing tournaments target Atlantic blue marlin (Makaira nigricans), white marlin (Kajikia albida) and roundscale spearfish on their seasonal foraging grounds in the South and Mid-Atlantic Bight. Through this network of tournaments and recreational anglers, we collected stomachs from Atlantic blue marli

Adult survival in a small seabird, Hydrobates leucorhous, covaries with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation over the past six decades.

Seabirds' annual survival is influenced by numerous factors, but oceanic conditions are among the most significant. Indices used to monitor these conditions typically cycle over decades. Using the longest capture-mark-recapture (CMR) time series available for the species (1955-2023), we estimated apparent adult survival of Leach's storm-petrels (Hydrobates leucorhous) from Kent Island, New Brunswick. We assessed whether survival covaried with large-scale oceanographic indices reflecting conditions at various periods in the life cycle. We used Cormack-Jolly-Seber CMR models to estimate the annu

Examinations on global changes in the total and spatial extent of tropical cyclone precipitation relating to rapid intensification.

Moderate tropical cyclone precipitation (TCP) is of great significance to regional water resource supply, while extreme TCP could bring significant adverse impacts to ecosystems and society, especially when tropical cyclones intensify rapidly, leaving no time to take prevention actions. Whether rapid intensification (RI) of tropical cyclones (TCs) affect TCP in both land and ocean remains unknown. Here we classified TCs which have undergone increases in the maximum sustained wind speed (MSW) by at least 30 knots within 24-h into RI category. We analyzed TCP totals provided by daily precipitati

Thiamin dynamics during the adult life cycle of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

Thiamin is an essential water-soluble B vitamin known for its wide range of metabolic functions and antioxidant properties. Over the past decades, reproductive failures induced by thiamin deficiency have been observed in several salmonid species worldwide, but it is unclear why this micronutrient deficiency arises. Few studies have compared thiamin concentrations in systems of salmonid populations with or without documented thiamin deficiency. Moreover, it is not well known whether and how thiamin concentration changes during the marine feeding phase and the spawning migration. Therefore, samp

Progressively greater biological carbon storage in the deep Atlantic during glacial inception.

Changes in oceanic circulation and carbon storage have been implicated as important drivers of atmospheric pCO2 variability during the last glacial cycle (0 to 150 ka), though consensus on the mechanisms responsible remains elusive due to sparse marine carbonate chemistry reconstructions. Here, we present vertical profiles of carbonate ion concentration ([CO32-]) from the Southwest Atlantic to investigate oceanic carbon sequestration during key intervals of atmospheric CO2 change. During the first major decline in atmospheric CO2 (115 to 109 ka), enhanced carbon storage occurred in the abyssal

Gone with the wind: An unexpected Sargassum inundation in the mid-Atlantic Azores archipelago.

Large masses of pelagic Sargassum occur in the Atlantic Ocean between the latitudes 5°S and 38°N. Since 2011, inundations have happened in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and West Africa, affecting biological communities and economies. A series of severe weather events in the Azores led to a Sargassum inundation between mid-December 2023 and early April 2024, here reported for the first time. Although the sea reclaimed most of the stranded algae, 555 metric tons were removed. Periodic inundations may represent an introduction pathway for non-native species since massive amounts of organisms

Challenges in Evaluating the Severity of Fibropapillomatosis: A Proposal for Objective Index and Score System for Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) in Brazil.

Fibropapillomatosis (FP) is a neoplastic disease that affects marine turtles worldwide, especially green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas). FP tumors can develop on the body surface of marine turtles and also internally in the oral cavity and viscera. Depending on their quantity, size and anatomical distribution, these tumors can interfere with hydrodynamics and the ability to feed, hence scoring systems have been proposed in an attempt to quantify the clinical manifestation of FP. In order to establish a new scoring system adapted to geographic regions, we examined 214 juvenile green sea turtles w

Pseudoceros astrorum, a new species of Polycladida (Cotylea, Pseudocerotidae) from Northeastern Brazil.

Pseudoceros astrorum n. sp. is characterized by a smooth dorsal surface with a brown ground colour, and with net-like pattern of small black granules, white spots of different sizes uniformly distributed, a thin black sub-marginal band, and a white marginal rim. The pseudotentacles are dark brown with white tips and the anterior margin and cerebral region is devoid of pigmentation. The male system is characterised by conspicuous spermiducal bulbs, a conical curved penis stylet, and the sucker lies more or less posterior. With this contribution, the number of known species from Brazil is now 72

Toxicity screening of 13 Gambierdiscus strains using neuro-2a and erythrocyte lysis bioassays.

Species in the epi-benthic dinoflagellate genus Gambierdiscus produce ciguatoxins (CTXs) and maitotoxins (MTXs), which are among the most potent marine toxins known. Consumption of fish contaminated with sufficient quantities of CTXs causes Ciguatera Fish Poisoning (CFP), the largest cause of non-bacterial food poisoning worldwide. Maitotoxins, which can be found in the digestive system of fish, could also contribute to CFP if such tissues are consumed. Recently, an increasing number of Gambierdiscus species have been identified; yet, little is known about the variation in toxicity among Gambi

Carbon dioxide release from the North Pacific abyss during the last deglaciation.

Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations were significantly lower during glacial periods than during intervening interglacial periods, but the mechanisms responsible for this difference remain uncertain. Many recent explanations call on greater carbon storage in a poorly ventilated deep ocean during glacial periods, but direct evidence regarding the ventilation and respired carbon content of the glacial deep ocean is sparse and often equivocal. Here we present sedimentary geochemical records from sites spanning the deep subarctic Pacific that--together with previously published results--show

Divergent and linked selection shape patterns of genomic differentiation between European and North American Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

As populations diverge many processes can shape genomic patterns of differentiation. Regions of high differentiation can arise due to divergent selection acting on selected loci, genetic hitchhiking of nearby loci, or through repeated selection against deleterious alleles (linked background selection); this divergence may then be further elevated in regions of reduced recombination. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from Europe and North America diverged >600,000 years ago and despite some evidence of secondary contact, the majority of genetic data indicate substantial divergence between lineages.

Trans-Arctic dispersals and the evolution of a circumpolar marine fish species complex, the capelin (Mallotus villosus).

Trans-Arctic dispersals and population and range expansions during the Pleistocene enhanced opportunities for evolutionary diversification and contributed to the process of speciation within the capelin, a northern marine-fish complex exhibiting a circumpolar distribution. Capelin is composed of four highly divergent and geographically discrete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) clades (609 bp; cytochrome b). Two clades occur in the North Atlantic, one associated with Canadian Atlantic waters, including Hudson Bay, and the second distributed from West Greenland to the Barents Sea. Two additional clades

Plate tectonic history and ocean oxygenation shaping biogeography of hydrothermal bacterial community.

The influence of plate tectonics on microbial distributions remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that the global biogeography of hydrothermal vent-endemic chemoautotrophic microbiota is structured by the tectonic history of the global major oceans. These microbiota, particularly anaerobic ones, are significantly more abundant in early-origin Pacific, Arctic, and Mediterranean oceans, whereas they are notably scarce in late-formed Atlantic and Indian Oceans. This pattern was attributed to the timing of ocean formation and its interplay with global redox evolution. Fully oxygenated co

Diving deeper into the taxonomy of the Neoscopelus species complex (Myctophiformes: Neoscopelidae) with the description of Neoscopelus serranoi sp. nov.

Previous studies have highlighted possible cryptic biodiversity in the genus Neoscopelus. This hypothesis was tested using new morphological, molecular and biogeographical data on species of this genus caught in the north Atlantic between 2010 and 2022. The information obtained has been combined with available data in an integrative approach, including a review of morphological characters reported in the ichthyological literature and DNA-based species delimitation analyses. The main outcome of the present study is the description of Neoscopelus serranoi sp. nov. from the Atlantic and southwest

Amorphinopsis atlantica Carvalho, Hajdu, Mothes & van Soest, 2004 (Porifera: Halichondriidae): notes on its distribution in the Colombian Caribbean.

Amorphinopsis atlantica (Halichondriidae) is the only known species of its genus in the Atlantic Ocean. It is a brittle, massive sponge with variable projections and coloration ranging from yellow to dark green, characterized by oxeas and accessory styles. Originally described from Brazil's southwestern coast, it has since been reported in several Caribbean sites, typically inhabiting submerged mangrove stilt-roots in coastal lagoons. Although shallow-water sponges in the Colombian Caribbean have been studied, this conspicuous species had not been previously documented in lagoonal systems of t

Ectoparasite fauna of the lebranche mullet, Mugil liza, from a coastal lagoon in the Southwestern Atlantic.

Coastal lagoons are among the most productive aquatic ecosystems worldwide and are widely used by mugilid fishes. Mugil liza stands out as one of the main resources of lagoon fisheries in southern and southeastern Brazil. This study aimed to identify the species composing the ectoparasite fauna of M. liza from the Maricá Lagoon, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. A total of 44 specimens of M. liza were examined, of which 95.4% were parasitized by at least one ectoparasite species. Six ectoparasite species were recorded. The copepod Ergasilus caraguatatubensis was the most representative species, wi

A pioneering longterm experiment on mesophotic macrofouling communities in the North Atlantic.

The mesophotic zone represents one of our planet's largest and least explored biomes. An increasing number of studies evidence the importance of macrofouling species in marine ecosystems, but information on these communities and the factors influencing their structures at mesophotic depths remain poor. This lack of understanding limits our ability to predict anthropogenic impacts or conduct restoration operations in the mesophotic and the lower boundary of the euphotic zones. In this study, we performed a 24-month experiment in a natural environment to investigate three factors influencing the

Dental pathology in dolphins (Cetacea: Delphinidae) from the southern coast of Brazil.

Pathological processes observed in the stomatognathic systems of mammalian species are a useful source of information about the habits, evolution and general health of such animals. Studies of pathological conditions on teeth are common in humans and other primates, but rare in wild animals in general and marine mammals in particular. For cetaceans, previous studies provided scanty records of dental anomalies in a few species. This is the first broad and systematic inventory of dental pathology in dolphins. Specimens stored at scientific collections from the southern coast of Brazil were visua

How global container shipping emissions and marine primary production are related to: A geographically and temporally weighted analysis.

Ocean sustainability is a critical global issue. However, increasing CO2 emissions from container shipping have adversely impacted marine ecosystems. Oceanic net primary production (NPP) is a key indicator of marine ecosystem health. Despite abundant research showing a relationship between CO2 and NPP, limited attention has been given to the relationship between CO2 emissions from ships and NPP. This study estimates global CO2 emissions from container shipping from 2018 to 2021 using the Ship Traffic Emission Assessment Model (STEAM), then combines remote sensing NPP data and applies a geograp
