[Influence of lithium on the neuromuscular blockade produced by atracurium and cisatracurium: study on rat phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparations.].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Lithium is widely used for the treatment of bipolar disorders and can interact with neuromuscular blockers. There is a controversy about the mechanisms by which it affects neuromuscular transmission and its interaction with neuromuscular blockers. The objective of this study was to evaluate, on the rat diaphragm, the effects of lithium on the muscular response and indirect stimulation, and the possible interaction with neuromuscular blockers. METHODS: Rats weighing between 250 and 300 g were sacrificed under urethane anesthesia. The phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparati

Failure of neuromuscular blockade despite high doses of rocuronium and atracurium in a patient with colorectal carcinoma: A case report.

Resistance to the effects of rocuronium and other neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBA) has been previously reported, including delayed onset of relaxation, rapid recovery and incomplete paralysis under recommended doses. These conditions have been associated with denervation injury, burns, immobilisation, infections, metabolic disorders, and drug interactions. In this report, we describe the case of a young male without any known pre-disposing factor for NMBA resistance, who failed to attain muscle relaxation with non-depolarising NMBA despite high doses of rocuronium and atracurium during two

Premedication with Diclofenac and Precurarization with Atracurium on Succinylcholine-Induced Myalgia in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: A Double-Blinded Randomized Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Succinylcholine is the only available depolarizing neuromuscular blocker that has been widely used in the induction of anesthesia, and it is the drug of choice for rapid-sequence induction of anesthesia due to its rapid onset of effect and ultrashort duration of action owing to its rapid hydrolysis by acetyl-cholinesterase. Postoperative muscle pain (myalgia) and muscle stiffness are the most common side effects and are observed most frequently on the 1st postoperative day in ambulatory surgery. The use of succinylcholine in the induction of anesthesia and intubation in ro

[Determination of atracurium and laudanosine in dog plasma during cardiopulmonary bypass by high performance liquid chromatography with fluorometric detection].

A high performance liquid chromatographic method coupled with fluorometric detection has been developed for the determination of atracurium and its major metabolite laudanosine in dog plasma. The separation of atracurium and laudanosine was performed on an Agilent Eclipse Plus C18 column, and the mobile phase consisted of 0.03 mol/L dipotassium hydrogen phosphate and acetonitrile (72: 28, v/v) at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. Verapamil was used as the internal standard. The sample was extracted by dichloromethane, concentrated and dissolved in the mobile phase. The detection is performed at 240 n

Combined H1 and H2 receptor blockade attenuates the cardiovascular effects of high-dose atracurium for rapid sequence endotracheal intubation.

Large doses of atracurium (1.5 mg/kg) (six times the ED95) can result in significant histamine release, resulting in systemic hypotension. The efficacy of histamine receptor blockade in attenuating atracurium induced hypotension was therefore studied. Four groups of seven patients each were studied: group I, control; group II, H1 blockade (1 mg/kg diphenhydramine); group III, H2 blockade (cimetidine 4 mg/kg); and group IV, H1 and H2 blockade (diphenhydramine 1 mg/kg and cimetidine 4 mg/kg). All patients were anesthetized with an intravenous narcotic-nitrous oxide technique and then given 1.5 m

Comparison of atracurium and "mini-dose" succinylcholine for preventing succinylcholine-induced muscle fasciculations: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

UNLABELLED: Several drugs have been used to prevent or attenuate succinylcholine- induced muscle fasciculations. There are possible advantages to succinylcholine pretreatment. We designed the present study to compare the effectiveness of atracurium versus "mini-dose" (5 mg) succinylcholine pretreatment for the prevention of muscle fasciculations. METHODS: Under standard monitoring, 79 patients were randomly assigned to three groups after premedication: Group 1 (n = 26) received normal saline as a placebo, Group 2 (n = 27) received 0.03 mg/kg atracurium, and Group 3 (n = 26) received 5 mg succ

The median effective dose (ED50) of cis-Atracurium for laryngeal mask airway insertion during general Anaesthesia for patients undergoing urinary surgery.

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, the laryngeal mask airway is an easy-to-use supraglottic airway device. However, the cis-atracurium dosage for laryngeal mask insertion has not been standardised. We aimed to determine the optimal dose of cis-atracurium using a sequential method for successful laryngeal mask insertion. METHODS: The cohort study protocol is registered at clinicaltrial.gov (NCT-03668262). Twenty-three patients undergoing elective urinary surgery were sequentially administered cis-atracurium doses as follows: 150, 100, 70, 50, 30, and 20 μg·kg- 1. The main outcome involved the d

Effect of Priming with Atracurium or Pancuronium on the Onset Time of Pancuronium in Patients Undergoing General Anesthesia for Elective Surgery: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Suxamethonium, a rapid-acting muscle relaxant, has been conventionally preferred during rapid sequence induction (RSI). The priming principle, which uses non-depolarising muscle relaxants, is an alternative in situations where it is contraindicated. Unfortunately, its efficacy has not been sufficiently documented in Nigerian patients. AIMS: The study aimed to use atracurium and pacuronium to evaluate the efficacy of the priming principle. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this randomised controlled trial, ninety adults undergoing elective surgery under general anaesthesia were randomly a

Evaluation of Response to Weight-based Dosing Strategies of Continuous, Fixed-Rate Atracurium Infusions in Critically Ill, Obese Adults With Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Fixed-rate infusions of weight-based neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) were adopted during the COVID pandemic to limit caregiver exposure during titrations. Although fixed-rate infusions are supported in studies of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), the optimal scalar for weight-based NMBAs in patients with obesity remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to compare change in oxygenation using two weight-based dosing strategies for atracurium in obese patients with ARDS. Secondary outcomes included total atracurium dose, mortality, and intensive care unit (
