mTOR-Mediated Protection Against Atrazine-Induced Ferroptosis and Dopaminergic Neurodegeneration in Parkinson's Disease Models.

Atrazine (ATR) is a widely used herbicide known to induce degeneration of nigrostriatal dopaminergic (DA) neurons, leading to a Parkinson's disease (PD)-like syndrome. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent non-apoptotic cell death, is implicated in various neurodegenerative diseases, though its specific role in PD remains unclear. In this study, 3657 differentially expressed genes associated with PD from the gene expression database were identified, which are enriched in the ferroptosis pathway. Additionally, ATR-induced SD rats and human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells were used to model PD and explore

Atrazine exposure induces skeletal muscle atrophy: Multi-omics insights into mechanisms and therapeutic targets.

Atrazine (ATZ), a frequently used herbicide, has well-documented toxicities in various organisms, yet its specific impact on skeletal muscle remains largely uncharted. Here, we found that ATZ inhibited myotube formation in C2C12 myoblasts and decreased both body weight and the cross-sectional areas of type IIA, IIB, and IIX myofibers in mice. Furthermore, ATZ drove muscle fiber shifting from mixed oxidative/glycolytic type IIA to fast-glycolytic type IIB, reduced satellite stem cell abundance, and contributed to excessive lipid accumulation. Mechanistically, transcriptomic analyses indicated t

Atrazine exposure caused oxidative stress in male rats and inhibited brain-pituitary-testicular functions.

Exposure to the herbicide atrazine has been shown to have deleterious effects on human and animal reproduction. To determine whether atrazine influences the brain-pituitary-testicular axis directly or indirectly, the present study examined the toxic effects of atrazine on fertility potential by assessing gonadal hormones, testicular function indices, sperm quality, and oxido-inflammatory markers in rats. Twelve animals were grouped into two groups; control and atrazine. The control group received oral administration of olive oil (2 mL/kg), while the atrazine group received 120 mg/kg of atrazin

Nanostructured catalysts applied to degrade atrazine in aqueous phase by heterogeneous photo-Fenton process.

SBA-15 and KIT-6 materials have been synthesized and modified with iron salts by the wet impregnation method with different metal loadings. The different mesostructures obtained were characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption at 77 K, X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed reduction, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. These iron-containing mesostructured materials have been successfully tested for the heterogeneous photo-Fenton degradation of aqueous solutions of dangerous herbicides, such as atrazine, using UV-visible light irradiation, at room temperature and close to neutral pH. The re

Hermaphroditic, demasculinized frogs after exposure to the herbicide atrazine at low ecologically relevant doses.

Atrazine is the most commonly used herbicide in the U.S. and probably the world. It can be present at several parts per million in agricultural runoff and can reach 40 parts per billion (ppb) in precipitation. We examined the effects of atrazine on sexual development in African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis). Larvae were exposed to atrazine (0.01-200 ppb) by immersion throughout larval development, and we examined gonadal histology and laryngeal size at metamorphosis. Atrazine (> or =0.1 ppb) induced hermaphroditism and demasculinized the larynges of exposed males (> or =1.0 ppb). In addition,

A Review on the Effects of Atrazine on Male Rat Reproductive System Cytoarchitecture, Steroidogenesis and Oxidative Pathway.

Atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine) is an active component of herbicides used worldwide in agriculture. Atrazine is an endocrine disruptor, capable of interfering with the delicate hormonal balance necessary for normal reproductive function. Despite numerous studies on atrazine's impact on male reproduction, significant gaps remain, particularly concerning the male genital tract beyond the testes. Therefore, we reviewed the effects of atrazine on the entire male reproductive system to understand the complexity of its actions. Adverse effects of atrazine on the morphoph

Fertility decline induced by subchronic exposure to an atrazine-mesotrione mixture in male Wistar rats.

A commercial atrazine-mesotrione mixture (Calaris®) is widely used in agriculture due to its improved weed control. However, toxicological data on this combination remain elusive, especially regarding its effects on mammalian health. Herein, we investigated the effects of subchronic exposure to 2 and 20 mg Kg-1 of Calaris® in male Wistar rats, focusing on reproductive parameters. Eighty days of daily exposure to 20 mg Kg-1 of Calaris® elicited nitrosative stress and ionic disturbance in the hypothalamus, and low serum LH levels. In the testis, the highest dose disrupted the activity of antioxi

Single-cell transcriptomics unveils atrazine's impact on neurons and microglia in C57BL/6 mice.

BACKGROUND: Atrazine (ATZ), a widely used herbicide, is implicated in neurodegenerative risks, yet its neurotoxic mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigates how environmentally relevant ATZ exposure disrupts neuron-microglia interactions to drive Parkinson's disease (PD)-like pathology. METHODS: C57BL/6 mice received 28-day oral ATZ (10 mg/kg/day). Behavioral phenotyping (open field, pole climb, wire hanging tests) assessed motor deficits. Midbrain tissues underwent histopathology and single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq). Intercellular communication networks were reconstructed using

Exploring the endocrine-disrupting potential of atrazine for male reproduction: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Atrazine is an herbicide widely used on plantations worldwide. Experimental studies suggest that the herbicide impairs male reproductive function in mammals. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the impact of atrazine exposure on the levels of hormones from the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis using murine as the animal model. After an extensive literature search, we selected 25 articles for the systematic review. Bias analysis and methodological quality assessments were examined using the SYRCLE Risk of Bias tool. Moreover, 20 out of the 25 studies were eligible fo

Adsorption kinetics and mechanism of atrazine on iron-modified algal residue biochar in the presence of soil.

Atrazine has been widely used as an herbicide, and its harm has attracted more and more attention. In this study, magnetic algal residue biochar (MARB) was prepared from algae residue, a by-product of aquaculture, by ball milling it with ferric oxide to study the adsorption and removal of the triazine herbicide atrazine in a soil medium. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm results showed that atrazine removal by MARB reached 95.5% within 8 h at a concentration of 10 mg·L-1, but the removal rate dropped to 78.4% in the soil medium. The pseudo-first- and pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmui

Exposure to atrazine by drinking water and the increased risk of neonatal complications in consequence: a meta-analysis.

This meta-analysis evaluates the association between atrazine (ATR) exposure and small for gestational age (SGA), preterm birth (PTB), and low birth weight (LBW). A comprehensive search was done on academic databases (e.g. PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar) to achieve all pertinent studies up to May 2023. A pooled odd ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were applied to evaluate this correlation. As a result, five eligible studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in our study, and the result of the present meta-analysis showed that ATR exposure increas

Carryover effect of atrazine and its metabolite-from treated bovine spermatozoa to the embryo's transcriptome†.

Atrazine (ATZ) is an extensively used herbicide and ubiquitous environmental contaminant. ATZ and its metabolite, diaminochlorotriazine (DACT), cause several cellular and functional alterations in spermatozoa. We aimed to examine the effect of ATZ/DACT on spermatozoon DNA integrity, fertilization competence, embryonic development, and transcriptome profile of in vitro-produced embryos derived from fertilization with pre-exposed sperm. Bovine spermatozoa exposed to ATZ (0.1 or 1 μM) or DACT (1 or 10 μM) during in vitro capacitation were used for in vitro fertilization of untreated oocytes. Clea

Atrazine and its metabolites degradation in mineral salts medium and soil using an enrichment culture.

An atrazine-degrading enrichment culture was used to study degradation of atrazine metabolites viz. hydroxyatrazine, deethylatrazine, and deisopropylatrazine in mineral salts medium. Results suggested that the enrichment culture was able to degrade only hydroxyatrazine, and it was used as the sole source of carbon and nitrogen. Hydroxyatrazine degradation slowed down when sucrose and/or ammonium hydrogen phosphate were supplemented as the additional sources of carbon and nitrogen, respectively. The enrichment culture could degrade high concentrations of atrazine (up to 110 μg/mL) in mineral sa

Changes in cellular energy allocation in Enchytraeus albidus when exposed to dimethoate, atrazine, and carbendazim.

Cellular energy allocation (CEA) is a methodology developed to evaluate the effects of toxic stress on the metabolic balance of organisms. It consists of the integration of the energy reserves available (Ea; total carbohydrate, protein and lipid content) and energy consumption (Ec) estimated by measuring electron transport system (ETS) activity. The main goal of the present study was to evaluate the effects on the energy budget of the soil invertebrate Enchytraeus albidus (Oligochaeta) after exposure to dimethoate, atrazine, and carbendazim (by testing the reproduction 10% effective concentrat

Effects of Lifetime Atrazine Exposure on Climbing Ability and Gut Integrity in Aged Drosophila melanogaster.

Atrazine is a commonly used herbicide that is often detected outside of agricultural systems. Early-life exposure is known to negatively affect a variety of traits in both vertebrates and invertebrates. However, the cumulative effects of lifetime exposure on health span (the period of life spent in good health) remain poorly understood. We used Drosophila melanogaster to investigate the effect of lifetime atrazine exposure on two critical health span indicators: mobility and gut epithelial integrity. Flies were reared and aged for up to 27 days on media containing atrazine dissolved in distill

Sublethal effects of cyfluthrin, atrazine, and prothioconazole on the development of European bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) colonies.

BACKGROUND: Bumblebees (Bombus spp.) are essential pollinators of agricultural crops, relying primarily on nectar and pollen for nutrition. However, these floral resources often contain pesticide residues that may exert sublethal effects on colony performance. While acute impacts are difficult to observe, chronic exposure can undermine colony development and increase the risk of collapse. The field-level effects of commonly used pesticides such as cyfluthrin, atrazine, and prothioconazole on the European bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we evaluated
