The brain possesses the remarkable ability to suppress undesirable signals generated by our own actions to ensure accurate perception, like the suppression of retinal motion signals during rapid eye movements, known as saccadic suppression. Attention, often referred to as the "mind's eye," undergoes rapid and frequent shifts, often occurring in the absence of explicit motor actions. Is visual processing similarly suppressed during attention shifts? In this study, we employed pupillometry and magnetoencephalography (MEG) to assess visual sensitivity across different attentional states. Our resu

Visuospatial attention has an inherent asymmetry: the leftward bias called pseudoneglect. In typical line bisection tasks, healthy individuals tend to judge the center of a line leftward of the true center, an effect attributed to the right hemisphere dominance in visuospatial attention. Since it has been shown that information perceived by the dominant eye strongly activates the ipsilateral visual cortex, we hypothesized that eye dominance may modulate visuospatial attention bias. Because activation of the left hemisphere induced by left eye dominance should mitigate the right hemisphere domi

Urban population in our country has increased at an annual rate of 2.7% during the last decade and it is estimated that by 2031, there would be about 600 million people living in urban India. The fast pace of urbanization has come to stay with increasing proportion of urban poor and vulnerable with health indicators much worse than their rural counterparts. The need to provide health care to urban poor has been emphasized in the past in various health committees' reports and National 5-year Development Plans, but no significant dent was made to improve the urban health scenario of the country.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Mandatory predonation reading materials inform donors about risk factors for transmissible disease, possible complications of donation and changes to the donation process. We aimed to assess the attention to predonation reading materials and factors which may affect attention.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A national survey in 2008 of 18,108 blood donors asked about self-assessed attention to reading the materials. In face-to-face interviews, 441 donors completed additional questions about reading the materials and a literacy test. Qualitative interviews of 27 donors asses

Emerging hypotheses suggest that efficient cognitive functioning requires the integration of separate, but interconnected cortical networks in the brain. Although task-related measures of brain activity suggest that a frontoparietal network is associated with the control of attention, little is known regarding how components within this distributed network act together or with other networks to achieve various attentional functions. This review considers both functional and structural studies of brain connectivity, as complemented by behavioral and task-related neuroimaging data. These studies

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common psychiatric disorder of childhood and often persists into adulthood. ADHD is a neurophysiologic disorder defined in behavioral terms and associated with significant morbidity in the realms of social and academic success, and self-esteem. ADHD is often associated with comorbid psychiatric disorders and learning disabilities, which further impede the successful development of these persons. It is essential that family physicians be knowledgeable about the presentation and diagnosis of ADHD. Stimulant medications continue to be th

This article reviews possible mechanisms for attentional bias in affective disorders and anxiety. Attentional bias is sometimes conceptualized as automatic in nature. However, there are methodological difficulties with studies purporting to demonstrate automaticity, and empirical and simulation evidence suggest that bias may be predominantly strategic. Bias in the voluntary control of attention may be driven by coping strategies, which in turn depend on appraisal of external demands, metacognitions of mental function, access of self-relevant knowledge in long-term memory, and self-focus of att

OBJECTIVES: Visual attention to emotional faces provides a useful framework for investigating orienting, visual exploration, and attentional engagement across development. The present study aimed to characterize the visuospatial organization of attention in neurotypical children and to examine how this pattern is modulated by social and emotional factors. Twenty children (aged 8-12 years) participated in a passive viewing paradigm of facial expressions while their eye movements were recorded using eye tracking (120 Hz).
METHODS: Oculomotor metrics based on areas of interest (eyes, mouth, nose

BACKGROUND: Cancer metastasis usually means that cancer cells spread to other tissues or organs, and the condition worsens. Identifying whether cancer has metastasized can help doctors infer the progression of a patient's condition and is an essential prerequisite for devising treatment plans. Fluorine 18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ( 18F -FDG PET/CT) is an advanced cancer diagnostic imaging technique that provides both metabolic and structural information.
METHOD: In cancer metastasis recognition tasks, effectively integrating metabolic and structural

Social attention, including shared attention and social orienting, is essential for positive social interactions. Although early visual social attention is often quantified using eye tracking, these indices may not consistently reflect cognitive engagement. Heart rate defined sustained attention (HRDSA) is a physiological measure that can index cognitive engagement alongside visual attention, leading to more comprehensive assessments of attentional processes that are particularly important in young, neurodiverse children with high support needs, including those with autism and fragile X syndro

Individuals with Angelman syndrome (AS) present with severe intellectual disability alongside a social phenotype characterised by social communication difficulties and an increased drive for social engagement. As the social phenotype in this condition is poorly understood, we examined patterns of social attention and social modulation of attention in AS. Twenty-four individuals with AS and twenty-one young children with similar mental age were shown videos featuring unfamiliar actors who performed simple actions across two conditions: a playful condition, in which the actor showed positive fac

STUDY HYPOTHESIS: In cases where patients attempt suicide through intentional self-poisoning, they often ingest drugs such as benzodiazepines that alter the central nervous system and memory. This is problematic, given that experts recommend the recovery of a patient's cognitive capacity before any psychiatric assessment is conducted. A previous pilot study by our group showed that cognitive tests focusing on attention are the most valuable when it comes to determining whether sufficient cognitive recovery has occurred to ensure that patients will remember the assessment after intentional self

Although it has been argued that visual attention and the dynamics of binocular rivalry are closely linked, strong evidence for this proposition is still lacking. Here, we investigate how perceptual alternations during binocular rivalry are affected by spatial attention by employing a cuing paradigm. We show a tight link between the occurrence of perceptual alternations and the spatiotemporal properties of visual attention: Alternations occurred earlier and more frequently at locations where visual attention was summoned by an exogenous cue. We argue that cuing a location where rival images ar

AIM: The attention and inhibition problems found in children with attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are also common in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Attempts to distinguish ADHD from FASDs in terms of these deficits are rare and were pursued in this study.
METHOD: A total of 116 children (47 with ADHD, 31 males, 16 females; 30 with FASDs, 17 males, 13 females; and 39 comparison children, 20 males, 19 females) participated. The mean age was 9 years 4 months (SD 1y 8mo) in the ADHD groups, 8 years 10 months (SD 1y 2mo) in the FASD group, and 9 years 1 mon

BACKGROUND: Attentional and visuospatial deficits in Parkinson's disease (PD) are linked to disrupted attention networks (AN), yet specific neural mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to elucidate the relationship between these dysfunctions and aberrant AN circuits in PD.
METHODS: Sixty-two PD patients stratified by cognitive status [cognitively normal (PDCN), mild cognitive impairment (PDMCI), and dementia (PDD)] and 53 matched healthy controls (HC) underwent resting state functional MRI. We performed amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and seed-based functional connectivity

The transition from childhood to adolescence involves important neural function, cognition, and behavior changes. However, the links between maturing brain function and sustained attention over this period could be better understood. This study examined typical changes in network functional connectivity over childhood to adolescence, developmental differences in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and how functional connectivity might underpin variability in sustained attention development in a longitudinal sample. A total of 398 resting state scans were collected from 173 childre

Background: The endogenous allocation of spatial attention to selected environmental stimuli is controlled by prefrontal (frontal eye fields [FEFs]) and parietal (superior parietal lobe [SPL] and intraparietal sulcus [IPS]) regions belonging to the dorsal attention network (DAN) with a subdivision in subsystems devoted to reorienting (or shifting) of attention between locations (SPL) or maintaining attention at contralateral versus ipsilateral locations (ventral IPS [vIPS]). Although previous studies suggested a leading role of prefrontal regions over parietal sites in orienting attention, the
