Professional Status of Audiology in U.S. Healthcare: A Health Economics Perspective.

Professional status in healthcare is determined not only by educational preparation or statutory scope of practice, but also by how a profession functions within reimbursement systems, labor markets, and healthcare delivery. This article applies a health economics framework to evaluate the current professional status of audiology in the United States using observable economic indicators rather than aspirational goals or regulatory intent. Drawing on evidence synthesized from companion analyses of workforce trends, professional earnings, educational investment, reimbursement policy, and labor m

Effects of CI Electrode Pullback on Electrophysiology, Audiology, and Postoperative Imaging.

INTRODUCTION: The position between the cochlea implant (CI) electrode array and the neural structures is crucial for the audiological outcome in CI surgery. Using the pullback technique, an electrode position closer to the modiolus can be achieved in perimodiolar electrode arrays. An approximation to the modiolus could be demonstrated by improved electrophysiological recordings after finalizing the pullback. METHODS: Forty-six patients were implanted with Nucleus Slim perimodiolar electrode arrays (Cochlear Pty, Sydney). After complete insertion of the electrode, a controlled pullback by abou

A Survey of Teachers' Knowledge of Audiology in an Educational Setting.

PURPOSE: In the United States, hearing loss has been found in 10%-20% of the pediatric population. Pediatric hearing loss can negatively impact academic performance and has been shown to negatively impact reading, writing, math, and other academic areas (Collier, 2025; Niclasen et al., 2016). Educational audiologists are part of the school multidisciplinary team who facilitate listening, learning, and communication access, as well as advocate for school children with hearing loss (Educational Audiology Association, 2019). Approximately 87% of students with hearing loss in the United States spe

Audiology-led model provides efficient and effective access to grommet surgery.

Children with otitis media who are referred to paediatric otorhinolaryngology (ORL) departments often experience significant delays in treatment. Alternate models of care utilising audiologists with extended scopes of practice can potentially improve outcomes in services experiencing difficulties with high demand and insufficient ORL capacity. An Advanced Audiology Practitioner (AAP) service was implemented in Counties Manukau to combat known long wait times for children with otitis media. This study aimed to retrospectively evaluate the clinical and service outcomes of the 165 children referr

Prudent healthcare in practice: integration of audiology services into primary care.

BACKGROUND: Swansea Bay University Health Board (SB UHB) has been trialling a primary care audiology pathway since 2016. The pathway enables patients with hearing, tinnitus or wax problems to be triaged directly to the audiology department acting as the first point of contact, freeing up general practitioners, Ear, Nose and Throat consultants and nurses to see patients with more complex health conditions. PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficiency of the SB UHB primary care audiology pathway. PARTICULAR FOCUS: Clinical outcomes of patients seen through the SB UHB primary care audiology pathway. OV

Outcomes from 7 years of a direct to audiology referral pathway.

BACKGROUND: The direct to audiology via ENT referral pathway was designed to enhance patient access to audiology services. The pathway is recommended in the Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery: a model of care for Ireland report, published in 2019. AIMS: This study aimed to review the outcomes of all patients that attended our institution over the last seven years. METHODS: A retrospective review of the direct to audiology referral service from March 2014 to December 2021 was conducted. Outcomes were defined by the pathway each patient took following attendance at the audiology clinic. Patien

Sports audiology: Ear hygiene practices of gym users who wear earphones.

BACKGROUND: Technological advancements have facilitated the demand for electronic systems to track and measure progress during exercise activities. Electronic devices with music applications, such as iPods and smartphones, are popular during gym sessions as they support the ambiance to one's exercise programme. Earphones are the popular choice for the transmission of music to the gym user's ear. There is a direct correlation between the cardiovascular health and the aural health because of the effect of increased blood supply to the auditory system. Therefore, this research study explores the

Stages of change in audiology: comparison of three self-assessment measures.

OBJECTIVE: In a clinical setting, theories of health behaviour change could help audiologists and other hearing health care professionals understand the barriers that prevent people with hearing problems to seek audiological help. The transtheoretical (stages of change) model of health behaviour change is one of these theories. It describes a person's journey towards health behaviour change (e.g. seeking help or taking up rehabilitation) in separate stages: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and, finally, maintenance. A short self-assessment measure of stages of change may g

Conversation breakdowns in the audiology clinic: the importance of mutual gaze.

BACKGROUND: Conversational breakdowns are a persistent concern for older adults with hearing impairment (HI). Previous studies in experimental settings have investigated potential causes of breakdowns in conversations with a person with HI, and effective strategies for repairing these breakdowns. However, little research has explored the causes of hearing-related communication breakdowns, and their repairs, in extended, naturally occurring conversations in a healthcare setting. AIMS: To analyse systematically instances of clients' initiations of repair within video-recorded initial audiology

The Audiologic and Otolaryngologic Phenotype in WHIM Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: WHIM syndrome (warts, hypogammaglobulinemia, infections, and myelokathexis syndrome) is an ultra-rare primary immunodeficiency disease caused by autosomal dominant hyperfunctional mutations in the chemokine receptor CXCR4. Otolaryngologists are frequently consulted to evaluate WHIM patients because of recurrent acute ear and sinus infections, particularly in early childhood; however, a systematic assessment of otolaryngologic and audiometric phenotypes is lacking. This study comprehensively describes the auditory and otolaryngology phenotype of WHIM syndrome. STUDY DESIGN: Prospect

Vestibular and audiological findings in the Alport syndrome.

Alport syndrome (AS) is caused by mutations in collagen IV, which is widespread in the basement membranes of many organs, including the kidneys, eyes, and ears. Whereas the effects of collagen IV changes in the cochlea are well known, no changes have been described in the posterior labyrinth. The aim of this study was to investigate both the auditory and the vestibular function of a group of individuals with AS. Seventeen patients, aged 9-52, underwent audiological tests including pure-tone and speech audiometry, immittance test and otoacoustic emissions and vestibular tests including video he

Audiologic Assessment in Adults With Down Syndrome.

Increased life expectancy in persons with Down syndrome (DS) is associated with premature age-related changes. The aim of this study was to assess auditory function in adults with DS and to evaluate the prevalence of hearing loss in this population. Audiometric tests were performed in 72 adults with DS (mean age 37.3±10.1 years, 51.4% females). Air conduction pure tone average (PTA) thresholds at frequencies 0.5-1-2-4 kHz were calculated to assess hearing function. Hearing loss was present if the PTA threshold was > 20 dB hearing level. Higher frequencies of 4 and 8 kHz were also assessed. Hea
