Frequency Following Responses to Electric Cochlear Stimulation in an Animal Model.

PURPOSE: Present-day cochlear-implant (CI) users can achieve high levels of speech reception in quiet surroundings. Nevertheless, sensitivity to the temporal pitch of sounds is limited, which contributes to deficits in speech reception amid multiple talkers and in appreciation of musical melodies. Short-term, invasive neurophysiological studies in animals have demonstrated limitations in neural phase locking in the tonotopic range of the auditory pathway that is activated by CIs. It remains an open question, however, whether those neural limitations can account for perceptual deficits in those

Prenatal exposure to the herbicide 2,4-D is associated with deficits in auditory processing during infancy.

INTRODUCTION: Despite widespread use, many herbicides and fungicides are not well studied for neurological effects. Fetal and infant brains are rapidly developing, yet the effects of early-life exposure to these classes of pesticides on visual and auditory function are unknown. Here we examined the effects of prenatal herbicide and fungicide exposure on infant grating visual acuity (VA) and auditory brainstem response (ABR). METHODS: 9 herbicides and 13 fungicides were measured in umbilical cord blood plasma from a cohort of infants in Fuyang County, China (n = 232). Grating VA and ABR latenc

A case of acute labyrinthitis due to intra-aural tick infestation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intra-aural tick infestations, though uncommon, pose a serious clinical challenge owing to the risk of acute labyrinthitis-an inflammatory condition of the inner ear. This inflammation can lead to severe complications such as sensorineural hearing loss, vertigo, and facial nerve palsy. Prompt recognition and management are crucial to prevent these adverse outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old female patient of Limbu ethnicity from Dharan presented with sudden-onset right-sided otalgia, accompanied by vertigo, emesis, and auditory impairment. Otoscopic examination revealed a t

Hearing loss and increased gait variability among older adults.

BACKGROUND: The influence of age-related hearing loss on slow gait has been suggested; however, whether it is associated with increased gait variability, an important predictor of fall risk, remains unclear. RESEARCH QUESTION: Is poor auditory acuity associated with increased gait variability, and does this gait change relate to accidental falls among older adults with hearing loss? METHODS: We studied 107 older adults (mean age, 76.5 years; 80.5 % women). Auditory acuity was measured using a pure tone average (PTA) of hearing thresholds for 0.5-4 kHz tones in the better-hearing ear. Hearing

Investigation of the hearing levels of siblings affected by a single GJB2 variant: Possibility of genetic modifiers.

OBJECTIVE: Variants in GJB2 can cause autosomal recessive deafness (DFNB1). There is evidence for genotype-phenotype correlations of GJB2 variants; however, several genotypes can cause varying levels of hearing loss likely attributable to differences in genetic or environmental background. As siblings share approximately 50% of their genetic background and usually have a common environmental background, analysis of phenotypes of siblings with a specific GJB2 variant may reveal factors relevant to phenotypic variation. There have been no previous analyses of differences in hearing among sibling

Collecting Objective Measures of Visual and Auditory Function in a National in-Home Survey of Older Adults.

Maintenance of visual and auditory function is important for preventing the onset of activity limitations and preserving quality of life in later life. To date, national panel studies focused on health and aging have mostly collected subjective (self-reported) measures of visual and auditory function. The National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), a study of Medicare beneficiaries ages sixty-five and older, recently developed a protocol for measuring objective visual and auditory function for its annual, in-home data collection conducted by trained interviewers. The protocol includes thre

Auditory agnosia caused by bilateral putamen haemorrhage.

A 55-year-old right-handed man with a history of hypertension suddenly fell and developed right hemiparesis. Neurological examination revealed that he was alert, but did not appropriately respond to verbal questions and commands. Detailed examination revealed that he could correctly respond to written commands. His speech was almost fluent, showing no paraphasia and normal articulation. His written sentences were legible. Pure tone audiometry showed that his auditory acuity was relatively preserved. His brainstem auditory evoked potential components from I to V were recorded bilaterally with n

Auditory and visual health after ten years of exposure to metal-on-metal hip prostheses: a cross-sectional study follow up.

Case reports of patients with mal-functioning metal-on-metal hip replacement (MoMHR) prostheses suggest an association of elevated circulating metal levels with visual and auditory dysfunction. However, it is unknown if this is a cumulative exposure effect and the impact of prolonged low level exposure, relevant to the majority of patients with a well-functioning prosthesis, has not been studied. Twenty four male patients with a well-functioning MoMHR and an age and time since surgery matched group of 24 male patients with conventional total hip arthroplasty (THA) underwent clinical and electr

Age-related improvements in auditory temporal resolution in reading-impaired children.

Individuals with developmental dyslexia show impairments in processing that require precise timing of sensory events. Here, we show that in a test of auditory temporal acuity (a gap-detection task) children ages 6-9 years with dyslexia exhibited a significant deficit relative to age-matched controls. In contrast, this deficit was not observed in groups of older reading-impaired individuals (ages 10-11 years; 12-13 years) or in adults (ages 23-25 years). It appears, therefore, that early temporal resolution deficits in those with reading impairments may significantly ameliorate over time. Howev

Hearing and anatomy of the ear of the European hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus.

A major threat to the declining European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is road traffic. Devising methods to reduce the number of collisions would increase hedgehog welfare in an urbanized world and serve to protect this flagship species, and this goal might be advanced by an understanding of their hearing. This study investigates the auditory capabilities and anatomy of the ear of the European hedgehog. Using auditory brainstem response testing on 20 live hedgehogs from Danish wildlife rescue centres, we measured hearing thresholds across 4-85 kHz and found a peak sensitivity around 40 kHz, r

The effects of noise on vision efficiency.

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between intensity, noise duration and non-auditory effect represented by changes both in visual acuity and the near point of accommodation. Changes in vision efficiency determined by a black and white chess board were monitored during and after 1 h exposure to 4 levels of noise: 90 dB-A, 93 dB-A, 96 dB-A or 99 dB-A and 2 h exposure to 96 dB-A. Results indicated that vision impairment can be attributed to a complex relationship between the intensity and the duration of exposure to noise.

Bone-conducted ultrasonic auditory brainstem response thresholds in a mouse model of cisplatin-induced hearing loss.

Cisplatin is widely used in cancer treatment but can cause hearing loss, predominantly at high frequencies. Auditory responses to bone-conducted ultrasonic stimulation have been proposed as a potential indicator of cochlear function, but it remains unclear how such responses are affected by cochlear damage. In this study, we measured auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds within and beyond the conventional hearing range in a mouse model of cisplatin-induced hearing loss. Of 32 mice initially examined, 9 were excluded at baseline because of pre-existing high-frequency hearing impairment.

Evaluation of Neonatal Deafening Protocols: Limitations in Achieving Complete Auditory Deprivation in Rats.

BACKGROUND: Congenital deafness disrupts the early critical phases of auditory development. Animal models mimicking congenital deafness are essential for studying auditory system maturation, necessitating neonatal deafening protocols achieving complete deprivation before hearing onset. This study investigated whether kanamycin alone or in combination with furosemide induces complete hearing loss in neonatal rats during the prehearing period, with the expectation that the combination would produce faster and more profound deprivation. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rat pups received kanamycin (n=9) o

Acute nicotine affects auditory brainstem responses in a frequency-, age-, and sex-dependent manner in mice.

Age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) is a widespread sensory disorder associated with diminished quality of life and increased risk of cognitive decline, with limited treatment options. While nicotinic acetylcholine receptor modulation is a potential treatment for improving auditory function, it is unclear if nicotine affects auditory responses in an age- and sex-dependent manner. To test this, we recorded tone-evoked auditory brainstem responses (ABR) from young (2-3 months) and old (16-22 months) male and female mice (FVB strain) following an injection of saline or nicotine (0.5 mg/kg, i.p

Parapharyngeal Schwannoma of the Mandibular Nerve Associated With Auditory Changes.

We present a case of a parapharyngeal schwannoma of the mandibular nerve with intraosseous extension into the mandible. The initial symptoms included decreased auditory acuity, with subsequent magnetic resonance imaging findings suggestive of Eustachian tube obstruction. This represents a rare symptom of schwannomas of the mandibular nerve. Owing to the degree of bony expansion and cortical thinning of the adjacent mandibular ramus, concern existed for a pathologic fracture. Treatment involved complete excision of the lesion using hemimandibulectomy with second stage reconstruction. The patien
