Deficits in auditory brainstem pathway encoding of speech sounds in children with learning problems.

Auditory brainstem responses were recorded in normal children (NL) and children clinically diagnosed with a learning problem (LP). These responses were recorded to both a click stimulus and the formant transition portion of a speech syllable /da/. While no latency differences between the NL and LP populations were seen in responses to the click stimuli, the syllable /da/ did elicit latency differences between these two groups. Deficits in cortical processing of signals in noise were seen for those LP subjects with delayed brainstem responses to the /da/, but not for LPs with normal brainstem m

Evidence for a glutamatergic pathway from the guinea pig auditory cortex to the inferior colliculus.

We attempt to provide evidence that the projection from the guinea pig auditory cortex (AC) to the inferior colliculus (IC) may contain glutamatergic or GABAergic fibers. Seven days after unilateral AC aspiration, histological studies indicated almost complete AC destruction and preterminal degeneration of fibers and terminal fields in the dorsal cortex (DCIC), external cortex (ECIC), and central nucleus (CNIC) of the IC ipsilateral to the ablated AC. Contralaterally, degeneration appeared in the DCIC. AC ablation depressed the electrically evoked Ca(2+)-dependent release of D-[3H]aspartate (D

[Tumor-induced function disorders of the acoustic nerve and the lower portions of the auditory pathway].

The manyfold features of acoustic neuromas, respectively tumors of the cerebello pontine angle, are tried to explain by pathophysiologic phenomena of the neural conduction. They are the pathologic fatigue of hearing, the disturbed excitability of the acustico facial stapedial reflex, the impaired velocity of nerve conduction, a poor synchronization of conduction as well as the excessively reduced monosyllabic and dichotic discrimination. With respect to the original tissue, localization, size as well as regional spread and growth pressure there result different constellations of symptoms, even

Auditory pathways of caudal telencephalon and their relation to the song system of adult male zebra finches.

Auditory information is critical for vocal imitation and other elements of social life in song birds. In zebra finches, neural centers that are necessary for the acquisition and production of learned vocalizations are known, and they all respond to acoustic stimulation. However, the circuits by which conspecific auditory signals are perceived, processed, and stored in long-term memory have not been well documented. In particular, no evidence exists of direct connections between auditory and vocal motor pathways, and two newly identified centers for auditory processing, caudomedial neostriatum

Phase reversal in brain stem responses: its use in the detection of asymmetry in the auditory pathways.

Electrode placement is an important consideration in the recording of a large-amplitude stable response. In this study, brain stem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEP) were obtained from subjects and patients under two electrode configurations, namely 'vertex-mastoid' and 'mastoid-mastoid'. The BAEP waveforms to ipsilateral, contralateral and binaural stimulation were examined for their phase relation with respect to stimulation. In the mastoid-mastoid recording mode, a complete polarity reversal was shown upon changing stimulation from the ipsilateral (with respect to the active input) to the co

Alterations in somatosensory, visual and auditory pathways in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: an under-recognised facet of ALS.

BACKGROUND: While amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is widely recognised as a multi-network disorder with extensive frontotemporal and cerebellar involvement, sensory dysfunction is relatively under evaluated. Subtle sensory deficits have been sporadically reported, but there is a prevailing notion that sensory pathways may be relatively spared in ALS. METHODS: In a prospective neuroimaging study we have systematically evaluated cerebral grey and white matter structures involved in the processing, relaying and mediation of sensory information. Twenty two C9orf72 positive ALS patients (C9+ A

Diet-induced obesity exacerbates auditory degeneration via hypoxia, inflammation, and apoptosis signaling pathways in CD/1 mice.

The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanisms of diet-induced obesity on hearing degeneration in CD/1 mice. Sixty 4-week-old male CD/1 mice were randomly and equally divided into 2 groups. For 16 weeks, the diet-induced obesity (DIO) group was fed a high fat diet and the control group was fed a standard diet of 13.43 % kcal fat. The morphometry, biochemistry, auditory brainstem response thresholds, omental fat, and histopathology of the cochlea were compared between the beginning and end of the study (4 vs. 20 weeks old). The results show that the body weight, fasting plasma triglyce

Measuring the middle-ear reflex: A quantitative method to assess effects of industrial solvents on central auditory pathways.

Volatile organic solvents are frequently present in industrial atmospheres. Their lipophilic properties mean they quickly reach the brain following inhalation. Acute exposure to some solvents perturbs the middle ear reflex, which could jeopardize cochlear protection against loud noises. As the physiological mechanisms involved in this protective reflex are highly complex, in vivo rodent models are required to allow rapid and reliable identification of any adverse effects of solvents on the middle ear reflex (MER). In this study, MER amplitude was measured in anesthetized Brown-Norway rats by m

Microsurgical anatomy of the auditory radiations: revealing the enigmatic acoustic pathway from a surgical viewpoint.

OBJECTIVE: The thalamocortical projections of the auditory system have not been detailed via microanatomical fiber dissections from a surgical viewpoint. The aim of this study was to delineate the course of the auditory radiations (ARs) from the medial geniculate body to their final destination in the auditory cortex. The authors' additional purpose was to display the relevant neural structures in relation to their course en route to Heschl's gyrus. METHODS: White matter fibers were dissected layer by layer in a lateral-to-medial, inferolateral-to-superomedial, and inferior-to-superior fashio

Effect of Neuronal Excitability in Hippocampal CA1 Area on Auditory Pathway in a Rat Model of Tinnitus.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a common disorder that causes significant morbidity; however, the neurophysiological mechanism is not yet fully understood. A relationship between tinnitus and limbic system has been reported. As a significant component of the limbic system, the hippocampus plays an important role in various pathological processes, such as emotional disturbance, decreased learning ability, and deterioration of memory. This study was aimed to explore the role of the hippocampus in the generation of tinnitus by electrophysiological technology. METHODS: A tinnitus model was established in

Autophagy regulates the degeneration of the auditory cortex through the AMPK-mTOR-ULK1 signaling pathway.

Presbycusis is the most common sensory impairment associated with aging; however, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. Autophagy has been demonstrated to serve a key role in diverse diseases; however, no studies have examined its function in central presbycusis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the changes of autophagy in the physiological processes of the auditory cortex and its role in the degeneration of the auditory cortex, as well as the related mechanisms using naturally aging rats and a D‑galactose (D‑gal)‑induced mimetic rat model of aging. The present stu

Probabilistic Fiber-Tracking Reveals Degeneration of the Contralateral Auditory Pathway in Patients with Vestibular Schwannoma.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Vestibular schwannomas cause progressive hearing loss by direct damage to the vestibulocochlear nerve. The cerebral mechanisms of degeneration or plasticity are not well-understood. Therefore, the goal of our study was to show the feasibility of probabilistic fiber-tracking of the auditory pathway in patients with vestibular schwannomas and to compare the ipsi- and contralateral volume and integrity, to test differences between the hemispheres. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients with vestibular schwannomas were investigated before surgery. Diffusion-weighted imagi

Noise trauma induced plastic changes in brain regions outside the classical auditory pathway.

The effects of intense noise exposure on the classical auditory pathway have been extensively investigated; however, little is known about the effects of noise-induced hearing loss on non-classical auditory areas in the brain such as the lateral amygdala (LA) and striatum (Str). To address this issue, we compared the noise-induced changes in spontaneous and tone-evoked responses from multiunit clusters (MUC) in the LA and Str with those seen in auditory cortex (AC) in rats. High-frequency octave band noise (10-20 kHz) and narrow band noise (16-20 kHz) induced permanent threshold shifts at high

Modification of auditory pathway functions in patients with hearing improvement after middle ear surgery.

We recorded auditory-evoked magnetic responses with a whole-scalp 122-channel neuromagnetometer from seven adult patients with unilateral conductive hearing loss before and after middle ear surgery. The stimuli were 50-msec 1-kHz tone bursts, delivered to the healthy, nonoperated ear at interstimulus intervals of 1, 2, and 4 seconds. The mean preoperative pure-tone average in the affected ear was 57 dB hearing level; the mean postoperative pure-tone average was 17 dB. The 100-msec auditory-evoked response originating in the auditory cortex peaked, on average, 7 msecs earlier after than before

[Clinical diagnosis of the auditory pathway using different acoustical evoked responses (author's transl)].

Evoked responses originating from cochlea, brain stem, and cortex are clinically used for differential diagnosis of hearing losses. The diagnostic range and the reliability of the different ERA methods are discussed. In our clinic brain stem potentials recorded by a nonsurgical method have been used as a routine audiometric test in more than 900 cases. The procedure has proved to be easier than electrocochleography and gives nearly the same information about cochlear and middle ear function if there is no VIIIth nerve or lower brain stem damage. For topical diagnosis of the lower auditory path
