Using auditory-visual speech to probe the basis of noise-impaired consonant-vowel perception in dyslexia and auditory neuropathy.

Both dyslexics and auditory neuropathy (AN) subjects show inferior consonant-vowel (CV) perception in noise, relative to controls. To better understand these impairments, natural acoustic speech stimuli that were masked in speech-shaped noise at various intensities were presented to dyslexic, AN, and control subjects either in isolation or accompanied by visual articulatory cues. AN subjects were expected to benefit from the pairing of visual articulatory cues and auditory CV stimuli, provided that their speech perception impairment reflects a relatively peripheral auditory disorder. The relationship between intellectual ability and auditory multitalker speech perception in neurodivergent individuals.

The ability to selectively attend to one talker in the presence of competing talkers is crucial to communication in noisy, real-world environments. In this study, we investigated the relationship between intellectual ability and speech perception under multitalker conditions. Since neurodivergent individuals show a wide range of intellectual ability, from above average IQ to intellectual disability, intellectual ability may be an important individual characteristic that impacts multitalker speech perception, but this is not currently well understood. We tested individuals with autism, fetal al

Comparison of Auditory Perception in Cochlear Implanted Children with and without Additional Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: The number of children with cochlear implants who have other difficulties such as attention deficiency and cerebral palsy has increased dramatically. Despite the need for information on the results of cochlear implantation in this group, the available literature is extremely limited. We, therefore, sought to compare the levels of auditory perception in children with cochlear implants with and without additional disabilities. METHODS: A spondee test comprising 20 two-syllable words was performed. The data analysis was done using SPSS, version 19. RESULTS: Thirty-one children who h

Irritable bowel syndrome patients show enhanced modulation of visceral perception by auditory stress.

OBJECTIVES: Symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients are sensitive to psychological stressors. These effects may operate through an enhanced responsiveness of the emotional motor system, a network of brain circuits that modulate arousal, viscerosomatic perception, and autonomic responses associated with emotional responses, including anxiety and anger. The aim of this study was to test the primary hypothesis that IBS patients show altered perceptual responses to rectal balloon distention during experimentally induced psychological stress compared with healthy control subjects. [Speech perception ability in a patient with a 8-channel auditory brainstem implant].

Auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is a central prosthesis that directly stimulates the cochlear nucleus in the brainstem for those who have interrupted auditory nerves and cannot benefit from the cochlear implantation. Speech perception in a recipient of the Nuclues 8 channel ABI, the first in Japan, is reported. A 25-year-old man with bilateral acoustic nerve tumors postlingually deafened due to tumor resection received auditory sensations with 5 channels. The correct answer using a coding strategy, SPEAK, was 35% for 5 vowels and 36% for 5 monosyllables. The use of ABI also improved his lip-r

Perception of dynamic acoustic patterns by an individual with unilateral verbal auditory agnosia.

Previous studies have found that subjects diagnosed with verbal auditory agnosia (VAA) from bilateral brain lesions may experience difficulties at the prephonemic level of acoustic processing. In this case study, we administered a series of speech and nonspeech discrimination tests to an individual with unilateral VAA as a result of left-temporal-lobe damage. The results indicated that the subject's ability to perceive steady-state acoustic stimuli was relatively intact but his ability to perceive dynamic stimuli was drastically reduced. We conclude that this particular aspect of acoustic proc

Speech perception and the discrimination of brief auditory cues in reading disabled children.

The processing of speech and nonspeech sounds by 23 reading disabled children and their age- and sex-matched controls was examined in a task requiring them to identify and report the order of pairs of stimuli. Reading disabled children were impaired in making judgments with very brief tones and with stop consonant syllables at short interstimulus intervals (ISI's). They had no unusual difficulty with vowel stimuli, vowel stimuli in a white noise background, or very brief visual figures. Poor performance on the tones and stop consonants appears to be due to specific difficulty in processing ver

Different modality-specific mechanisms mediate serial dependence effects in visual and auditory perception.

BACKGROUND: Perceptual history plays an important role in sensory processing and decision making, shaping how we perceive and judge external objects and events. Indeed, past stimuli can bias what we are currently seeing in an attractive fashion, making a current stimulus appear more similar to a preceding one than it actually is. Such attractive "serial dependence" effects concern virtually every aspect of perception, suggesting that they may reflect a fundamental principle of brain processing. However, it is unclear whether the ubiquitous nature of serial dependence is due to an underlying ce

[Assessment of auditory perception of children with single-sided deafness after cochlear implantation].

Unilateral deafness will lead to the decline of children's speech recognition rate, language development retardation and spatial positioning ability, which will have many adverse effects on children's life and study. Cochlear implantation can help children rebuild binaural hearing, and systematic audiological evaluation after operation is particularly important for clinicians to evaluate the hearing recovery of children. In this study, a variety of commonly used audiological evaluation, testing processes and methods after cochlear implantation in children with unilateral deafness are described

Brain correlates of speech perception in schizophrenia patients with and without auditory hallucinations.

The experience of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH, "hearing voices") in schizophrenia has been found to be associated with reduced auditory cortex activation during perception of real auditory stimuli like tones and speech. We re-examined this finding using 46 patients with schizophrenia (23 with frequent AVH and 23 hallucination-free), who underwent fMRI scanning while they heard words, sentences and reversed speech. Twenty-five matched healthy controls were also examined. Perception of words, sentences and reversed speech all elicited activation of the bilateral superior temporal cortex,

Predisposition to domain-wide maladaptive changes in predictive coding in auditory phantom perception.

Tinnitus is hypothesised to be a predictive coding problem. Previous research indicates lower sensitivity to prediction errors (PEs) in tinnitus patients while processing auditory deviants corresponding to tinnitus-specific stimuli. However, based on research with patients with hallucinations and no psychosis we hypothesise tinnitus patients may be more sensitive to PEs produced by auditory stimuli that are not related to tinnitus characteristics. Specifically in patients with minimal to no hearing loss, we hypothesise a more top-down subtype of tinnitus that may be driven by maladaptive chang

Influence of Three Auditory Profiles on Aided Speech Perception in Different Noise Scenarios.

Hearing aid (HA) users differ greatly in their speech-in-noise (SIN) outcomes. This could be because the degree to which current HA fittings can address individual listening needs differs across users and listening situations. In two earlier studies, an auditory test battery and a data-driven method were developed for classifying HA candidates into four distinct auditory profiles differing in audiometric hearing loss and suprathreshold hearing abilities. This study explored aided SIN outcome for three of these profiles in different noise scenarios. Thirty-one older habitual HA users and six yo

Preschool impairments in auditory processing and speech perception uniquely predict future reading problems.

Developmental dyslexia is characterized by severe reading and spelling difficulties that are persistent and resistant to the usual didactic measures and remedial efforts. It is well established that a major cause of these problems lies in poorly specified phonological representations. Many individuals with dyslexia also present impairments in auditory temporal processing and speech perception, but it remains debated whether these more basic perceptual impairments play a role in causing the reading problem. Longitudinal studies may help clarifying this issue by assessing preschool children befo

Visual recalibration of auditory spatial perception: two separate neural circuits for perceptual learning.

A remarkable example of rapid perceptual learning is the visual recalibration of auditory spatial perception, which can result in either a bias (ventriloquism after-effect) or an improvement (multisensory enhancement) in auditory localization. Here, we examine the possibility that these after-effects might depend on two distinct neural pathways (geniculostriate vs. collicular-extrastriate). To this end, patients with a lesion of the striate cortex (hemianopic patients) or temporoparietal cortex (neglect patients) were asked to localize weak sounds, before and after a brief exposure to repetiti

The role of phonological awareness, speech perception, and auditory temporal processing for dyslexia.

There is strong evidence that auditory processing plays a major role in the etiology of dyslexia. Auditory temporal processing of non-speech stimuli, speech perception, and phonological awareness have been shown to be influential in reading and spelling development. However, the relationship between these variables remains unclear. In order to analyze the influence of these three auditory processing levels on spelling, 19 dyslexic and 15 control children were examined. Significant group differences were found for all speech variables, but not for any non-speech variable. Structural equation mo
