Optimizing Parameters for Using the Parallel Auditory Brainstem Response to Quickly Estimate Hearing Thresholds.

OBJECTIVES: Timely assessments are critical to providing early intervention and better hearing and spoken language outcomes for children with hearing loss. To facilitate faster diagnostic hearing assessments in infants, the authors developed the parallel auditory brainstem response (pABR), which presents randomly timed trains of tone pips at five frequencies to each ear simultaneously. The pABR yields high-quality waveforms that are similar to the standard, single-frequency serial ABR but in a fraction of the recording time. While well-documented for standard ABRs, it is yet unknown how presen

Auditory Brainstem Response Thresholds to Air- and Bone-Conducted CE-Chirps in Neonates and Adults.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds to air- and bone-conducted CE-Chirps in neonates and adults. METHOD: Thirty-two neonates with no physical or neurologic challenges and 20 adults with normal hearing participated. ABRs were acquired with a starting intensity of 30 dB normal hearing level (nHL). The lowest stimulus intensity level at which a wave V was identifiable and replicable was considered the ABR threshold. RESULTS: ABR thresholds to air-conducted CE-Chirps were 9.8 dB nHL for neonates and adults. ABR thresholds to bone-conduct

Behavioral auditory thresholds and loss of ribbon synapses at inner hair cells in aged gerbils.

The potential contribution of auditory synaptopathy to age dependent hearing loss was studied in groups of young and old gerbils. The analysis of the number of inner hair cell ribbon synapses in aged gerbils (37.9±3.3months of age) revealed only a relatively small (11-17%) loss in the basal two thirds of the cochlea, while a more pronounced reduction was identified towards the apex (almost 40%) when compared to a group of young gerbils (9.5±3.2months of age). Mean threshold elevation in the old gerbils was around 25dB at 2 and 10kHz. Frequency-specific behavioral thresholds and ribbon synapse

[Effect of noise, exertion and thermal load on temporary auditory threshold shift (TTS) and on fatigue].

Temporary threshold shifts were determined in 14 voluntary subjects who were exposed during one hour to noise levels 70, 85 and 100 dB(A) accompanied by physical exercise (30% VO2max), thermal load (TE = 32.0 +/- 0.8 degrees C), and after combined exposure to these three factors. Before and after each exposure, temporary were measured threshold shifts (TTS2) at frequencies 3, 4 and 6 kHz. The psychophysical fatigue was determined using flicker and blinking tests. The results showed that exposure to noise, noise and thermal load, noise and exercise, and combined noise-exercise -thermal load exp

Dietary restriction and presbyacusis: periods of restriction and auditory threshold losses in the CBA/J mouse.

Dietary restriction was imposed on CBA/J mice, animals which develop presbyacusis late in their lives. Animals restricted for their whole lives, as well as those restricted after midlife, had less presbyacusis than did control mice fed ad libitum. Dietary restriction did not increase the life spans of these mice. Restriction until midlife did not protect from presbyacusis, nor did it increase life span. In this genotype, dietary restriction protects against hearing loss only if it occurs at the age of most rapid decline of cochlear function.

Multispecies initial numerical validation of an efficient algorithm prototype for auditory brainstem response hearing threshold estimation.

The auditory brainstem response (ABR) can be used to evaluate hearing sensitivity of animals. However, typical measurement protocols are time-consuming. Here, an adaptive algorithm is proposed for efficient ABR threshold estimation. The algorithm relies on the update of the predicted hearing threshold from a Gaussian process model as ABR data are collected using iteratively optimized stimuli. To validate the algorithm, ABR threshold estimation is simulated by adaptively subsampling pre-collected ABR datasets. The simulated experiment is performed on 5 datasets of mouse, budgerigar, gerbil, and

[Examination of reaction time--auditory brainstem responses--ABR in noise induced temporary and permanent threshold shift].

This study was conducted to investigate the differences between auditory brainstem responses--ABR recorded in men with temporary or permanent threshold shifts (TTS or PTS). Behaviorally, the tested ears showed insignificant differences in the hearing thresholds at frequencies in the range 0.25-8 kHz. The latency of waves I, III, V and interwave intervals I-III, III-V, I-V were analysed as functions of stimulus intensity. The comparisons between recordings obtained in groups with TTS and PTS showed significant differences in latencies of wave V at 90 dB nHl only. The latencies of waves I, III a

Supra-threshold auditory brainstem response amplitudes in humans: Test-retest reliability, electrode montage and noise exposure.

The auditory brainstem response (ABR) is a sub-cortical evoked potential in which a series of well-defined waves occur in the first 10 ms after the onset of an auditory stimulus. Wave V of the ABR, particularly wave V latency, has been shown to be remarkably stable over time in individual listeners. However, little attention has been paid to the reliability of wave I, which reflects auditory nerve activity. This ABR component has attracted interest recently, as wave I amplitude has been identified as a possible non-invasive measure of noise-induced cochlear synaptopathy. The current study aime

Using click-evoked auditory brainstem response thresholds in infants to estimate the corresponding pure-tone audiometry thresholds in children referred from UNHS.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether behavioral pure-tone audiometry (PTA) thresholds in children can be accurately estimated from the corresponding infants' click-evoked auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds through a retrospective review of data from a universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) program in Taiwan. METHOD: According to medical records from Mackay Memorial Hospital, Taipei Hospital District, 45,450 newborns received hearing screening during January 1999-December 2011. Among these newborns, 104 (82, both ears; 22, one ear; total, 186 ears) received regular follow-up and were re

Transient acoustic stimulation induces time-dependent synaptic remodeling and enhancement of auditory nerve output after threshold recovery.

BACKGROUND: Acoustic stress can alter cochlear function even in the absence of permanent threshold elevation; however, synaptic consequences of transient acoustic stimulation remain incompletely understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether transient acoustic stimulation induces changes in the auditory nerve output and cochlear ribbon synapse morphology following hearing threshold recovery. METHODS: Young adult CBA/CaJ mice were exposed to band-limited acoustic stimulation (45-2,000 Hz, 95 dB SPL, 2 h). Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), hair cell and spiral ganglion neuro

Urocortin 3 signalling in the auditory brainstem aids recovery of hearing after reversible noise-induced threshold shift.

KEY POINTS: Ongoing, moderate noise exposure does not instantly damage the auditory system but may cause lasting deficits, such as elevated thresholds and accelerated ageing of the auditory system. The neuromodulatory peptide urocortin-3 (UCN3) is involved in the body's recovery from a stress response, and is also expressed in the cochlea and the auditory brainstem. Lack of UCN3 facilitates age-induced hearing loss and causes permanently elevated auditory thresholds following a single 2 h noise exposure at moderate intensities. Outer hair cell function in mice lacking UCN3 is unaffected, so th

[Agreement between auditory threshold calculated from cortical evoked response audiometry and tone audiometry in occupational hearing loss].

In a group of 126 men the authors evaluated the auditory threshold from cortical ERA findings and comparison with their threshold sound audiometry. The mean age of the patients means = 52.5 years (min. = 25 years, max. = 69 years, s = 8.95). Noise exposure means = 16.5 years (min. = 4 years, max. = 30 years, s = 4.5). In 79.3% the men worked as miners in uranium mines, other mining occupations were represented only by small numbers. The arithmetic mean of the total percentage hearing loss (calculated according to Fowler) means = 49.7% (min. = 17%, max. = 100%, s = 15). The cumulative frequency

Association between Anemia and Auditory Threshold Shifts in the US Population: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Existing evidence indicates that both iron deficiency anemia and sickle cell anemia have been previously associated with hearing loss. However, human data investigating the association between anemia and auditory threshold shifts at different frequencies in the adolescent, adult and elderly population are extremely limited to date. Therefore, this cross-sectional study used the dataset from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2012 to explore differences in low- or high-frequency hearing thresholds and hearing loss prevalence between participants with and withou

Auditory Tones and Foot-Shock Recapitulate Spontaneous Sub-Threshold Activity in Basolateral Amygdala Principal Neurons and Interneurons.

In quiescent states such as anesthesia and slow wave sleep, cortical networks show slow rhythmic synchronized activity. In sensory cortices this rhythmic activity shows a stereotypical pattern that is recapitulated by stimulation of the appropriate sensory modality. The amygdala receives sensory input from a variety of sources, and in anesthetized animals, neurons in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) show slow rhythmic synchronized activity. Extracellular field potential recordings show that these oscillations are synchronized with sensory cortex and the thalamus, with both the thalamus and corte

Changes in size and shape of auditory hair cells in vivo during noise-induced temporary threshold shift.

In this study we describe changes in the size and shape of auditory hair cells of the alligator lizard in vivo during noise-induced temporary threshold shift. These changes consist of a decrease in cell volume, a decrease in cell length and an increase in cell width. We speculate that these changes are due to relaxation of cytoskeletal contractile elements and osmotic loss of intracellular water. We also describe a decrease in the surface area of the hair cell plasmalemma, and speculate that it is related to the endocytosis and intracellular accumulation of cell membrane during synaptic vesicl

High levels of sound pressure: acoustic reflex thresholds and auditory complaints of workers with noise exposure.

INTRODUCTION: The clinical evaluation of subjects with occupational noise exposure has been difficult due to the discrepancy between auditory complaints and auditory test results. This study aimed to evaluate the contralateral acoustic reflex thresholds of workers exposed to high levels of noise, and to compare these results to the subjects' auditory complaints. METHODS: This clinical retrospective study evaluated 364 workers between 1998 and 2005; their contralateral acoustic reflexes were compared to auditory complaints, age, and noise exposure time by chi-squared, Fisher's, and Spearman's

Pressure and particle motion detection thresholds in fish: a re-examination of salient auditory cues in teleosts.

The auditory evoked potential technique has been used for the past 30 years to evaluate the hearing ability of fish. The resulting audiograms are typically presented in terms of sound pressure (dB re. 1 μPa) with the particle motion (dB re. 1 m s(-2)) component largely ignored until recently. When audiograms have been presented in terms of particle acceleration, one of two approaches has been used for stimulus characterisation: measuring the pressure gradient between two hydrophones or using accelerometers. With rare exceptions these values are presented from experiments using a speaker as the

A Dynamic Time Warping-Aware Series-Temporal Transformer for Automated Thresholding of Auditory Brainstem Responses.

Auditory brainstem response (ABR) is widely used in clinical practice to assess hearing, with thresholds typically determined by clinicians via visual inspection-a process prone to human bias. Various statistical methods have therefore been developed to assist clinicians with this task and improve test accuracy and efficiency. However, existing methods primarily focus on determining the presence or absence of an ABR at a single stimulus level, thereby neglecting inter-level correlations that hold valuable information. This work proposes the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW)-Aware Series-Temporal Tran

Predicting Behavioral Threshold at 6 and 8 kHz for Children and Adults Based on the Auditory Brainstem Response.

PURPOSE: Common clinical application of auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing is limited to 0.25-4 kHz. Prior research has demonstrated associations between ABR and behavioral thresholds for tone burst stimuli > 4 kHz in adults, but there are no comparable data for children. The ability to predict behavioral thresholds > 4 kHz clinically based on the ABR would provide valuable audiologic information for individuals who are unable to provide behavioral thresholds. This study included children with hearing loss and children with normal hearing to determine the association between ABR and beh
