Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is a rare condition characterized by pain along the distribution of the glossopharyngeal nerve. Surgical approaches via microvascular decompression represent a common treatment strategy. For this procedure, an understanding of the location of the cranial nerve and the offending vasculature is critically important. A mixed reality system was used to register patient-specific 3D models onto the patients head for operative planning and anatomical visualization. A 58-year-old female presented to neurosurgery with severe right-sided facial, tongue, and jaw pain unresponsi

PURPOSE: In minimally invasive spring-assisted craniectomy, surgeons plan the surgery by manually locating the cranial sutures. However, this approach is prone to error. Augmented reality (AR) could be used to visualize the cranial sutures and assist in the surgery planning. The purpose of our work is to develop an AR-based system to visualize cranial sutures, and to assess the accuracy and usability of using AR-based navigation for surgical guidance in minimally invasive spring-assisted craniectomy.
METHODS: An AR system was developed that consists of an electromagnetic tracking system linke

BACKGROUND: Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the brain are vessel conglomerates of feeding arteries and draining veins that carry a risk of spontaneous and intraoperative rupture. Augmented reality (AR)-assisted neuronavigation permits continuous, real-time, updated visualization of navigation information through a heads-up display, thereby potentially improving the safety of surgical resection of AVMs.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors report a case of a 37-year-old female presenting with a 2-year history of recurrent falls due to intermittent right-sided weakness and increasing clumsiness in t

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a common joint disease in young and middle-aged patients, which seriously burdens their lives and work. For early-stage ONFH, core decompression surgery is a classical and effective hip preservation therapy. In traditional procedures of core decompression with Kirschner wire, there are still many problems such as X-ray exposure, repeated puncture verification, and damage to normal bone tissue. The blindness of the puncture process and the inability to provide real-time visualization are crucial reasons for these problems. To optimize this procedure,

BACKGROUND: The current intraoperative pulmonary nodule localization techniques require specific medical equipment or skillful operators, which limits their widespread application. Here, we present an innovative nodule localization technique in a canine lung model using augmented reality (AR) navigation.
METHODS: Peripheral pulmonary lesions were artificially created in canine model. A preoperative chest computed tomography scan was performed for each animal. The acquired computed tomography images were analyzed, and an established intraoperative localization plan was uploaded into HoloLens (

The objective of this study is to introduce the application of augmented reality (AR) navigation system developed by the authors in recontouring surgery of craniofacial fibrous dysplasia. Five consecutive patients with craniofacial fibrous dysplasia were enrolled. Through three-dimensional (3D) simulation, a virtual plan was designed to reconstruct the normal anatomical contour of the deformed region. Surgical recontouring was achieved with the assistance of the AR navigation system. The accuracy of the surgical procedure was assessed by superimposing the post-operative 3D craniomaxillofacial

Background: While performing surgeries in the OR, surgeons and assistants often need to access several information regarding surgical planning and/or procedures related to the surgery itself, or the accessory equipment to perform certain operations. The accessibility of this information often relies on the physical presence of technical and medical specialists in the OR, which is increasingly difficult due to the number of limitations imposed by the COVID emergency to avoid overcrowded environments or external personnel. Here, we analyze several scenarios where we equipped OR personnel with au

Conventional needle insertion training relies on medical dummies that simulate surface anatomy and internal structures such as veins or arteries. These dummies offer an interesting space to augment with useful information to assist training practices, namely, internal anatomical structures (subclavian artery and vein, internal jugular vein and carotid artery) along with target point, desired inclination, position and orientation of the needle. However, limited research has been conducted on Optical See-Through Augmented Reality (OST-AR) interfaces for training needle insertion, especially for

Augmented reality is a technology that allows a surgeon to see key hidden subsurface structures in an endoscopic video in real-time. This works by overlaying information obtained from preoperative imaging and fusing it in real-time with the endoscopic image. Magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and fiber tractography are known to provide additional information to that obtained from standard structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Here, we report the first 2 cases of the use of real-time augmented reality during laparoscopic myomectomies with visualization of uterine muscle fi

In transoral robotic surgery preoperative image data do not reflect large deformations of the operative workspace from perioperative setup. To address this challenge, in this study we explore image guidance with cone beam computed tomographic angiography to guide the dissection of critical vascular landmarks and resection of base-of-tongue neoplasms with adequate margins for transoral robotic surgery. We identify critical vascular landmarks from perioperative c-arm imaging to augment the stereoscopic view of a da Vinci si robot in addition to incorporating visual feedback from relative tool po

Children with autism spectrum condition (ASC) suffer from deficits or developmental delays in symbolic thinking. In particular, they are often found lacking in pretend play during early childhood. Researchers believe that they encounter difficulty in generating and maintaining mental representation of pretense coupled with the immediate reality. We have developed an interactive system that explores the potential of Augmented Reality (AR) technology to visually conceptualize the representation of pretense within an open-ended play environment. Results from an empirical study involving children

BACKGROUND: Surgeons must understand the complex anatomy of the cerebellum and brainstem and their 3-dimensional (3D) relationships with each other for surgery to be successful. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no fiber dissection studies combined with 3D models, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) of the structure of the cerebellum and brainstem. In this study, we created freely accessible AR and VR simulations and 3D models of the cerebellum and brainstem.
OBJECTIVE: To create 3D models and AR and VR simulations of cadaveric dissections of the human cerebellum and

PURPOSE: During interventional procedures, clinicians need to mentally register anatomical information from preoperative cross-sectional images onto the patient's body to envision the location of subsurface targets and critical structures. This study aims to address this challenge by developing an augmented reality (AR)-based tracking system that can leverage cross-sectional images to provide real-time three-dimensional (3D) visualization of lesion targets and enable precise surgical procedures.
APPROACH: Our AR platform combines a customized high-speed, real-time, optical tracking system, a

This case report describes the successful use of an augmented reality (AR) guidance system (XR90, MediView XR Inc., Cleveland Ohio) to assist in the percutaneous biopsy of a splenic mass performed in a minor procedure room. Traditional two-dimensional (2D) imaging modalities such as ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) present limitations in depth perception, spatial orientation, and procedural ergonomics, particularly in anatomically complex and mobile regions like the spleen. The AR system integrates real-time ultrasound, electromagnetic (EM) tracking, and pre-procedural CT data to genera

BACKGROUND: Contemporary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) practice has evolved from uniform mechanical alignment to individualized alignment planning in response to growing evidence that a single alignment strategy does not optimize outcomes for all patients. However, precise execution of patient-specific alignment strategies remains challenging with manual instrumentation. Augmented reality (AR) technology addresses this limitation by providing real-time intraoperative visualization of anatomic landmarks and planned resection parameters. In this study, individualized alignment was applied within
