A natural focus of the blood fluke Orientobilharzia turkestanica (Skrjabin, 1913) (Trematoda: Schistosomatidae) in red deer (Cervus elaphus) in Hungary.

The large American liver fluke, Fascioloides magna - introduced to Europe before 1875 - was the first non-indigenous trematode to be detected in Hungarian cervids in 1995. As the most precious deer population became infected in the Gemenc game reserve a study has been launched to assess the extent and the effect of F. magna infections and to examine the options for the treatment of infected deer populations. Livers of red deer shot during regular hunting were submitted for the survey and were investigated by necropsy for the presence of F. magna and other liver dwelling trematodes. Recovered p

Bioactive molecules from sea hares.

Sea hares, belonging to the order Opisthobranchia, subclass Gastropoda, are mollusks that have attracted many researchers who are interested in the chemical defense mechanisms of these soft and "shell-less" snails. Numbers of small molecules of dietary origin have been isolated from sea hares and some have ecologically relevant activities, such as fish deterrent activity or toxicity. Recently, however, greater attention has been paid to biomedically interesting sea hare isolates such as dolastatins, a series of antitumor peptide/macrolides isolated from Dolabella auricularia. Another series of

Detection of Fasciola gigantica infection in snails by polymerase chain reaction.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect Fasciola gigantica infection in the snail intermediate host. Fasciola specific primers amplified a 124 bp fragment in PCR when the genomic DNA isolated from F. gigantica infected Lymnaea auricularia snails was used as template. In addition to the 124 bp amplicon, a ladder of DNA fragments representing amplification of the 124 bp repetitive sequences was observed. Genomic DNA of the parasite was used as a positive control, which also gave an amplification of the 124 bp fragment. DNA isolated from non-infected snails was used as a negative contr

Pathogenicity of a fungus resembling Wangiella dermatitidis isolated from edible mushrooms.

A fungus resembling the human pathogen Wangiella dermatitidis (Kano) McGinnis, a dematiaceous hyphomycete, was recovered from imported desiccated "black fungus" mushrooms (Auricularia polytrichia (Mont.) Sacc.), a food item popular in Far Eastern cuisine. Except for its conidia, which are mostly reniform to allantoid rather than ovoid as is characteristic for W. dermatitidis, and the undecided mode of conidiogenesis, the isolate closely resembles W. dermatitidis in gross and microscopic morphology, thermotolerance, and general and neurotrophic infectivity patterns in mice injected intraperiton

Morphological and molecular data for Neocatatropis primorskii n. g. n. sp. and Notocotylus ikutai Sasaki & Nakao, 2021 (Trematoda: Notocotylidae).

Cercariae of two trematode species from the family Notocotylidae were found in the snails Radix auricularia and Boreoelona ussuriensis. Sexually mature flukes were obtained by experimentally infecting a duckling and a few chickens, respectively, with metacercariae from the found cercariae. Based on a combination of morphological and molecular (nuclear and mitochondrial markers) evidence, the trematodes grown in the duckling were identified as Notocotylus ikutai. The adult flukes obtained from the infected chickens were assigned to trematodes previously grouped into the genus Catatropis on the

Fasciola gigantica transmission in the zoonotic fascioliasis endemic lowlands of Guilan, Iran: experimental assessment.

The lowland flatlands around the city of Bandar-Anzali, at the Caspian Sea shore, Guilan province, are an endemic area where Fasciola gigantica appears to be the fasciolid species involved and past outbreaks affecting around 15,000 people and the highest human infection rates in Iran have been reported. Fascioliasis transmission in that area has been experimentally analysed for the first time, by means of assays of monomiracidial (Group A: 120 snails) and pentamiracidial (Group B: 96 snails) infections of local Radix lymnaeid snails with a local cattle F. gigantica isolate. Ribosomal DNA ITS-2

[Visceral lesions in mammals and birds exposed to agents of human cercarial dermatitis].

Over the past few years, the cercarial dermatitis has become a new problem of public health, obviously linked to the prolonged stay of migrant birds on our territory. This is a skin affection characterized by pruriginous and papulous eruptions caused by penetration of avian bilharzian larvae under the skin. These larvae are emitted by molluscs, mostly limneids. In aquatic birds, especially in migrating Anatidae, these larvae reach the visceral vessels, become adults in a few weeks, lay eggs, then degenerate. Corresponding miracidia contaminate new limneids. Since 1993, the total number of annu

Studies on the prevalence and laboratory transmission of fascioliasis in animals in the Kashmir Valley.

In Kashmir, 85.1% of cattle, 51.3% of sheep and 14.8% of goats were found infected with Fasciola spp. The prevalence rate varied from 66.6 to 100.0%, 25.0 to 100% and nil to 66.0% in cattle, sheep and goats respectively in different months of the year. Fasciola gigantica was the predominant species in all animal species but sheep harboured both F. gigantica and F. hepatica. The prevalence of F. hepatica infection in sheep happens to be the first report from India. Lymnaea auricularia sensu stricto supported the development of F. gigantica under laboratory conditions. The incubation temperature

Current status of fasciolosis in Vietnam: an update and perspectives.

Vietnam is recognized to be endemic for fasciolosis. However, most of the available publications have not been published in international journals. This review is based on national and international Vietnamese publications and highlights the current status of fasciolosis in Vietnam. It also provides some information available for neighbouring countries. Updated data on responsible species, distribution, transmission and control aspects are summarized. The central region of Vietnam is reported as being highly endemic for fasciolosis, with a high number of human patients (more than 20,000 in 201

Morphological and molecular characterization of lymnaeid snails and their potential role in transmission of Fasciola spp. in Vietnam.

Freshwater snails of the family Lymnaeidae play an important role in the transmission of fascioliasis worldwide. In Vietnam, 2 common lymnaeid species, Lymnaea swinhoei and Lymnaea viridis, can be recognized on the basis of morphology, and a third species, Lymnaea sp., is known to exist. Recent studies have raised controversy about their role in transmission of Fasciola spp. because of confusion in identification of the snail hosts. The aim of this study is, therefore, to clarify the identities of lymnaeid snails in Vietnam by a combination of morphological and molecular approaches. The molecu

The occurrence of cercarial dermatitis in Central Bohemia.

The occurrence of a dermatitis was reported from 4 natural water reservoirs in Central Bohemia (Czechoslovakia) in June and August 1985 and 1986. The clinical course of the disease was suggestive of cercarial dermatitis. Exanthema occurred most frequently under the bathing suits of afflicted persons, and on unprotected parts of their skin as well. A total of 5,865 snails (Lymnaea auricularia) were collected at the localities Nový rybník in Príbram, Spálený mlýn at Lísnice and Uhonice. Nine individuals of L. stagnalis were collected at Grado, Celákovice. Biological examination indicated cercari

Revealing the genetic mechanisms underpinning the parasite-induced water-seeking behaviour of insects through RNA-seq.

Water-seeking behaviour in arthropods infected by mermithid nematodes or nematomorphs is a classic example of host manipulation, yet its molecular basis remains poorly understood. We investigated mechanisms underlying this aberrant behaviour in European earwigs (Forficula auricularia) infected with the nematode Mermis nigrescens using comparative RNA-seq across stages of infection and behavioural manipulation in both host and parasite. We detected 12 876 and 9722 expressed genes in earwigs and nematodes, respectively. Differential expression analyses identified 673 upregulated and 593 downregu

Acetyl group dictates macrophage immune activation by polysaccharide ME-2 via TLR4-NF-κB/MAPK pathways.

ME-2, a GXG'G''M type polysaccharide with a high O-acetyl group content, was isolated and purified from Auricularia auricula-judae. However, the mechanism underlying its immunomodulatory activity has not been thoroughly investigated. This study demonstrates that ME-2 effectively reverses cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppression in vivo by normalizing organ indices, increasing serum cytokine levels, and restoring the structure of the spleen tissue. In vitro, ME-2 binds to TLR4 on the surface of RAW264.7 cells. This binding triggered the activation of both the MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways

Nudibranchs as Sources of Marine Natural Products with Antitumor Activity: A Comprehensive Review.

Nudibranchs have garnered increasing interest in biomedical research due to their complex chemical defense mechanisms, many of which are derived from their diet, including sponges, cnidarians, tunicates, and algae. Their remarkable ability to sequester dietary toxins and synthesize secondary metabolites positions them as a promising source of biologically active compounds with potential therapeutic applications, particularly in oncology. This study aimed to review and summarize the available literature on the bioactive potential of nudibranch-derived compounds, focusing mainly on their antitum

Molecular diversity of avian schistosomes in Danish freshwater snails.

Avian schistosomes are widespread parasites of snails and waterfowl and may cause cercarial dermatitis (swimmer's itch) in humans, a disease that is frequently reported in European countries. These parasites are known to occur in Denmark, but here, we applied a new approach using molecular tools to identify the parasites at species level. In order to do that, 499 pulmonate freshwater snails (Radix sp., Lymnaea stagnalis, Stagnicola sp. and Planorbarius corneus) were sampled from 12 lakes, ponds, and marshes in the greater Copenhagen area. Avian schistosome cercariae were identified by microsco

Parasitological and molecular study of the furcocercariae from Melanoides tuberculata as a probable agent of cercarial dermatitis.

Cercarial dermatitis is caused by animal schistosomes in many parts of the world including Iran. Various stages of the parasites have been studied in intermediate and definitive hosts in northern and southwestern Iran; however, no molecular investigation for species identification and classification of these agents has been carried out, so far. In the present study, more than 3,800 aquatic snails were collected from water sources of Khuzestan, southwest Iran. The snails were identified as Lymnaea gedrosiana, Radix auricularia, Melanoides tuberculata, Melanopsis sp. and Physa acuta. They were e
