Integrity at stake: confronting "publish or perish" in the developing world and emerging economies.

The scientific community faces significant ethical challenges due to the "publish or perish" culture, particularly in developing and emerging economies. This paper explores the widespread unethical practices in scientific publishing, including the sale of authorships, the proliferation of "paper mills," and the misuse of artificial intelligence to produce fraudulent research. These practices undermine the integrity of scientific research, skew publication metrics, and distort academic rankings. This study examines various instances of academic fraud, emphasizing the impact on low-income countr

Dealing with inappropriate-, low-quality-, and other forms of challenging peer review, including hostile referees and inflammatory or confusing critiques: Prevention and treatment.

Within the context of journal peer review, when high-quality referee input is coupled with appropriate editorial oversight from a journal's leadership, the result can be the selection and publication of high-quality manuscripts that are ideally targeted to the journal's readership's interests. However, in its worse forms, flawed referee input and indifferent- or misdirected journal leadership can result in damage to the quality of materials published and the relationships among, and careers of, the involved parties. This article identifies methods that journals can employ to select journal lea

Errores más comunes al redactar artículos médicos originales.

One of the skills that is more in need to be strengthened in the medical area is the dissemination of knowledge. For this reason, it is necessary to provide elements that promote training in scientific writing. Identifying the most common problems when writing medical original articles for publication will provide useful resources that should contribute to the generation of knowledge. There are multiple reasons that intervene for an original article not to be accepted in a medical journal, among which failure to follow instructions for authors and methodological, design and structural problems

From prohibition to integration: LLMs in scientific publishing.

The growing use of large language models (LLMs) in scientific writing has intensified debates about authorship, originality, and research integrity. Critics often argue that LLM-generated text lacks originality because it is derived from existing literature. This Perspective challenges that assumption by arguing that scientific knowledge, whether produced by humans or machines, is inherently cumulative. We argue that both researchers and LLM systems operate within inherited bodies of scientific knowledge, making intellectual leadership rather than textual production the defining criterion of a

Diversity and Expertise Among Authors of U.S. Surgical Society Clinical Guidelines.

BackgroundClinical practice guidelines (CPGs) shape surgical care and outcomes, but concerns persist regarding the diversity and expertise of their authors. Whether U.S. surgical society guidelines reflect inclusive and expert-driven authorship remains unknown.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 213 CPGs published by 11 national U.S. surgical societies between 2015 and 2024. We assessed author gender, race/ethnicity, and prior publication history using validated name-based algorithms and PubMed queries. Authors were classified as underrepresented in medicine (URiM) if identified

Preventing Diffusion of Moral Responsibility in Big Team Science: Taking an Ecosystem Approach.

Long-standing frameworks for the ethics of biomedical research are being challenged on multiple fronts by seismic shifts in the way science is practiced. One such shift, which is the focus of "Filling the Network Gap in Research Ethics: Analyzing Ethical Issues at Scale in Big Team Science," by Susan Wolf and colleagues in this issue of the Hastings Center Report, is the evolution of biomedical research toward very large scientific teams. The authors seek to fill a gap in research ethics frameworks that arises with the conduct of big team science, at the mesolevel of research networks. However

The 100 most cited articles in androgenetic alopecia: A bibliometric analysis.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a condition with a rapidly evolving research landscape. The expanding volume of AGA research necessitates synthesis to identify trends and gaps. Bibliometric analysis can be used to quantify the characteristics of a body of literature, and this technique has not been previously applied to AGA. We aimed to evaluate the bibliometric characteristics of the top 100 most cited AGA articles over the past 50 years. This includes the analysis of contributing authorship, institutional affiliation, journal representation, publication years, citation counts, country product

The Production of Antibodies (1941) by F. M. Burnet or by Burnet, Freeman, Jackson and Lush: Collaboration in research.

A slim 75-page 'book,' The Production of Antibodies: A Review and a Theoretical Discussion was published 84 years ago, in 1941. The authorship is normally attributed to Francis MacFarlane Burnet (1889-1985), 1960 Noble Laureate for his research on acquired immune tolerance and acknowledged as the most famous Australian scientist. A revised edition in 1949 was co-authored with Frank Fenner (1914-2010), another distinguished Australian virologist, best remembered for the elimination of smallpox in Australia and for control of the rabbit population. The curiosity and the topic of this paper is th
