Mindfulness and progressive muscle relaxation as standardized session-introduction in individual therapy: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: There is scarce research on the effects of mindfulness in individual therapy. As many practitioners integrate mindfulness exercises into individual therapy, empirical evidence is of high clinical relevance. METHOD: We investigated the effects of a session-introducing intervention with mindfulness elements (SIIME) in a randomized, controlled design. The effects of SIIME on therapeutic alliance and symptomatic outcome were compared with progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) and treatment-as-usual (TAU) control conditions. The sample comprised 162 patients with anxiety and depression.

Effects of self-relaxation methods and visual imagery on IOP in patients with open-angle glaucoma.

In this study, the effects of a training in relaxation and visual imagery on the intra-ocular pressure (IOP) of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma were investigated. Twenty-three patients, aged 24-69 years, were assigned either to a training group or to a waiting-list control group. The intervention included a basic programme (BP) of standard autogenic relaxation exercises and an advanced programme (AP) in which special exercises in ocular relaxation and imagination of aqueous humour drainage were conducted. IOP was measured before and after each training session. Twenty-four-hour IOP p

Non-Pharmacological Treatment of Primary Headaches-A Focused Review.

Headache disorders are a significant global health burden, leading to reduced quality of life. While vast pharmacological treatments are available, they may be associated with adverse effects or inadequate efficacy for some patients, therefore there is a need for exploring alternate treatment strategies. This review gives a brief explanation and evaluation of some established and emerging non-pharmacological approaches for headache management, focusing on nutraceuticals and diet, acupuncture, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), biofeedback, relaxation techniques, autogenic training, and neurom

[Tension headache].

The life time prevalence of episodic tension headache ranges between 13-66%, of chronic tension headache between 1-3%. In most studies a slight preponderance of women was found. Approximately 20% of persons afflicted by tension headache seek for medical help. The costs of tension headache are mainly indirect ones due to lost work days. Increased pain sensitivity of the pericranial muscles, psychosocial stress and psychiatric disorders are discussed as main pathophysiological mechanisms. Taking into consideration the uncertainty of the entity "tension headache" tricyclic antidepressants and psy

Treatment of atopic dermatitis: a comparison of psychological and dermatological approaches to relapse prevention.

A randomized controlled trial compared the effectiveness of 4 group treatments for atopic dermatitis, a chronic skin disorder characterized by severe itching and eczema: dermatological educational program (DE), autogenic training as a form of relaxation therapy (AT), cognitive-behavioral treatment (BT), and the combined DE and BT treatments (DEBT). BT comprised relaxation, self-control of scratching, and stress management. Group treatments were also compared with standard medical care (SMC). Assessments at 1-year follow-up showed that the psychological treatments (AT, BT, and DEBT) led to sign

The effects of progressive muscle relaxation on sleep quality in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing number of people suffering from insomnia, sleep has evolved into a global public health issue. Compared to the side effects and instability of drug treatments, people are constantly seeking non-pharmacological treatments to improve sleep quality. Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) has gradually come into focus. Because existing evidence remains inconsistent, this study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: As of May 2026, studies related to progressive muscle relaxation and sleep quality were identified through searches of five databases, i

Effects of progressive muscle relaxation therapy with home exercise on pain, fatigue, and stress in subjects with fibromyalgia syndrome: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia is accompanied by symptoms of fatigue, depression, sleep disorders, and physical and mental stress [1]. It is a difficult-to-treat disorder because its exact causes are unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the effect of progressive muscle relaxation therapy (PMRT) on pain, fatigue, and stress in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome. METHODS: Thirty-seven patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (age: 20-65 years) were randomly allocated to the PMRT group (n1= 18, 2 men and 16 women) or non-PMRT group (n2= 19, 2 men and 17 women). Psychophysiological aspects of increasing resistance to space motion sickness.

One of the actual and difficulty solved problems of the adaptation period to microgravitation is space motion sickness (MS) that has the negative influence on well-being and performance of crewmembers in the initial and highly crucial phase of the orbital flight. Among the prophylactic measures for decrease of the unfavourable influence of space MS the preflight training is of great importance, and its role in perspective undoubtedly will grow in connection with increase of the number of crewmembers. During the last years several authors received experimental materials evidenced that as a base

Application of psychoimmunotherapy in patients with alopecia universalis.

Mental stress and immunological abnormality have recently been listed as causes of alopecia universalis. This disease is difficult to treat with only ordinary pharmacotherapy. Thus, from the standpoint of psychoneuroimmunology, stress was relieved by relaxation and image therapy, and administration of small doses of a strong immunosuppressant was effective, leading to clinically favorable results. In addition, changes were recognized in the subpopulation of peripheral lymphocytes and in beta-endorphin before and after relaxation and image therapy. The treatment of alopecia universalis favorabl

[Triennial experience in group hypnosis therapy and the teaching of medical self-hypnosis].

A three year experiment with group hypnosis therapy for the teaching of medical self-hypnosis is reported. The teaching was divided into 7 courses followed by a total of 142 pupil-patients. The self-hypnotic techniques employed maximised motivational and gratification factors. A special type of deep-breathing is also described. This at least partially solves the problem of inducing a sufficiently deep trance for the achievement of appreciable results. Its efficacity was confirmed in almost all the patients despite the number and diversity of their problems and varied motivation.

[Role of psychotherapy in the complex treatment of children who stutter].

In 30 preschool children the efficacy of various psychotherapeutic methods in the treatment of spasmophemia was estimated. The effect of group psychotherapy, play therapy and age-modified variants of autogenous training is described. Importance of family psychotherapy is determined, and attempts at specifying the most typical pathological family situations are made. It is noted that the psychotherapy plays an important role in the treatment of spasmophemia at the preschool age, and contributes to a stable social adaptation of the child.

Nonpharmacological treatment of tics in Tourette syndrome adding videotape training to self-hypnosis.

OBJECTIVE: This case series examines the practicality of using a standardized method of training children in self-hypnosis (SH) methods to explore its efficiency and short-term efficacy in treating tics in patients with Tourette syndrome. METHODS: The files of 37 children and adolescents with Tourette syndrome referred for SH training were reviewed, yielding 33 patients for analysis. As part of a protocol for SH training, all viewed a videotape series of a boy undergoing SH training for tic control. Improvement in tic control was abstracted from subjective patient report. RESULTS: Seventy-ni

Treatment outcome expectancies and hypnotic susceptibility as moderators of pain reduction in patients with chronic tension-type headache.

The aim of this study was to determine whether hypnotic susceptibility (a) predicts pain reduction posttreatment and at follow-up independent of generic expectations of treatment outcome and mode of treatment and (b) predicts persistence of pain reduction during the follow-up period. In 169 patients with chronic tension-type headaches randomly allocated to either self-hypnosis or autogenic training, pain reduction posttreatment and at follow-up was significantly associated with hypnotic susceptibility independent of generic expectations of treatment outcome and treatment condition. Moreover, i
