Single-photon avalanche diodes dynamic range and linear response enhancement by conditional probability correction.

Detectors based on single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) operating in free-running mode surfer from distorted detection signals due to the impact of afterpulse, dead time, and the non-linear detection efficiency response. This study presents a correction method based on conditional probability. In the experiments with high temporal resolution and huge dynamic range conditions, this method's residual sum of squares is near 68 times smaller than the uncorrected received data of SPAD and near 50 times smaller than deconvolution method. This method is applied to polarization lidar and CO2 lidar,

A critically prolonged avalanche burial with recorded cardiac electrical activity and complete recovery - a case report.

The probability of survival in avalanche accidents is time-dependent. Critically buried victims who undergo a long burial duration (over 60 min) face a possible mortality rate of over 80%. Understanding the physiological response during critical avalanche burial is crucial for improving rescue strategies and outcomes. We present the case of a 55-year-old male skier buried under an avalanche for 4 h and 51 min in the Italian Alps. Continuous heart rate monitoring revealed distinct phases of cardiac activity during burial. Despite severe hypothermia, the victim survived without extracorporeal re

Critically buried avalanche victims can develop severe hypothermia in less than 60 min.

BACKGROUND: A major challenge in the management of avalanche victims in cardiac arrest is differentiating hypothermic from non-hypothermic cardiac arrest, as management and prognosis differ. Duration of burial with a cutoff of 60 min is currently recommended by the resuscitation guidelines as a parameter to aid in this differentiation However, the fastest cooling rate under the snow reported so far is 9.4 °C per hour, suggesting that it would take 45 min to cool below 30 °C, which is the temperature threshold below which a hypothermic cardiac arrest can occur. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a

Non-avalanche-related snow immersion deaths: tree well and deep snow immersion asphyxiation.

Non-avalanche-related snow immersion death (NARSID), or snow immersion asphyxiation, is a significant winter mountain hazard for skiers and snowboarders. This phenomenon occurs predominately in western North America, where large tree wells and deep snowpacks develop. Although statistics are difficult to procure, snow immersion asphyxiation has resulted in more than 70 documented deaths in the past 2 decades. The primary purpose of this review is to examine the existing literature on NARSID to help prevent such dangerous accidents through educating wilderness medicine professionals and fosterin

Electrical Transport of Nb-Doped MoS2 Homojunction P-N Diode: Investigating NDR and Avalanche Effect.

2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are promising candidates for next-generation nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. Yet, controlling layer number, stacking angle, and interfacial quality in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures remains challenging, often limiting device performance and reproducibility. Homojunctions formed within a single 2D material can circumvent these issues, but their reliable fabrication and systematic exploration of exotic quantum phenomena remain elusive. Here, we report the fabrication and characterization of a thickness-modulated lateral p-n homojunction from

A versatile photon counting system with active afterpulse suppression for free-running negative-feedback avalanche diodes.

InGaAs/InP-based negative-feedback avalanche diodes (NFADs) have been demonstrated to be an excellent option for photon detection at telecom wavelengths in quantum communication applications, where photon arrival times are random. However, it is well-known that the operation of NFADs at low temperatures (193 K or below) is crucial to minimize the effects of afterpulsing and high dark count rates (DCRs). In this work, we present a new versatile readout electronics system with active afterpulse suppression that also offers flexible cooling options. Through the characterization of two NFAD detect

Full recovery of an avalanche victim with profound hypothermia and prolonged cardiac arrest treated by extracorporeal re-warming.

Survival of hypothermic avalanche victims with cardiac arrest is rare. This report describes full recovery of a 29-year-old backcountry skier completely buried for 100 min at 3.0m (9.8 ft) depth. On extrication he was unconscious, but breathing spontaneously into an air pocket; core body temperature measured 22.0 degrees C (71.6 degrees F). He was intubated and ventilated on site. Ventricular fibrillation commenced during helicopter transportation, whereby chest compression was lacking for 15 min. At the nearest hospital continuous cardiopulmonary resuscitation was initiated, but defibrillatio

Cerebral blood flow and metabolism under conditions of simulated avalanche burial in humans: The triple H syndrome.

Avalanche burial exposes individuals to a combination of hypothermia, hypercapnia and hypoxia. We investigated the impact of mild hypothermia on cerebrovascular function during room-air breathing and progressive hypercapnic hypoxia. In 14 participants (6 females) the radial artery and internal jugular vein were catheterized to measure blood gases, intravascular pressure, biomarkers of neurovascular damage (tau, neurofilament light (Nf-L) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), whereas duplex ultrasound was used to quantify global cerebral blood flow (CBF), cerebral oxygen delivery (CDO2),

Effects of Carbon Dioxide and Temperature on the Oxygen-Hemoglobin Dissociation Curve of Human Blood: Implications for Avalanche Victims.

Completely avalanche-buried patients are frequently exposed to a combination of hypoxia and hypercapnia with a risk of normothermic cardiac arrest. Patients with a long burial time and an air pocket are exposed to a combination of hypoxia, hypercapnia, and hypothermia which may lead to the development of the "triple H syndrome". This specific combination has several pathophysiological implications, particularly on the cardiovascular system and oxygen transport (oxygen supply and oxygen consumption). To examine the effects on hemoglobin oxygen affinity, we investigated venous blood samples from

Avalanche Preparedness and Accident Analysis Among Backcountry Skier, Sidecountry, and Snowmobile Fatalities in the United States: 2009 to 2019.

INTRODUCTION: While avalanche fatalities have remained relatively steady per year, data suggest a possible increase in sidecountry use and snowmobile fatalities. Limited information is known regarding the accident details and preparedness among different groups of backcountry users including snowmobiles, sidecountry, and backcountry skiers, and what specific factors could contribute to their fatalities. METHODS: Avalanche fatality reports covering all US states posted by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center available online for 10 seasons (2009-2010 through 2018-2019 seasons) were analyz

Effects of hypothermia, hypoxia, and hypercapnia on brain oxygenation and hemodynamic parameters during simulated avalanche burial: a porcine study.

Avalanche patients who are completely buried but still able to breathe are exposed to hypothermia, hypoxia, and hypercapnia (triple H syndrome). Little is known about how these pathological changes affect brain physiology. The study aim was to investigate the effect of hypothermia, hypoxia, and hypercapnia on brain oxygenation and systemic and cerebral hemodynamics. Anesthetized pigs were surface cooled to 28°C. Fraction of inspiratory oxygen ([Formula: see text]) was reduced to 17% and hypercapnia induced. Hemodynamic parameters and blood gas values were monitored. Cerebral measurements inclu

Resolution of Strain Abnormalities During Extracorporeal Rewarming From Accidental Hypothermic Cardiac Arrest Following Avalanche Burial.

A hypothermic avalanche victim underwent, during extracorporeal warming from asystolic arrest, 3-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography. At 33°C core temperature, left ventricular ejection fraction had recovered, whereas myocardial strain still demonstrated significant dysfunction until 36°C. Deformation analysis seems more sensitive than global assessment during myocardial recovery from hypothermic cardiac arrest. (Level of Difficulty: Intermediate.).

Histopathological changes in lungs of the mountain snow avalanche victims and its potential usefulness in determination of cause and mechanism of death.

On 28 January 2003 snow avalanche in the Polish Tatras happened, in which 8 people died and 5 were injured. We tried to determine cause and manner of death in 6 fatal victims instead of advanced late post mortem changes in internal organs. Taking into consideration the circumstances of death, we paid special attention to histopathological examination of lungs, extended by Gomori's and AZAN staining. Pattern of the changes was similar to those observed in forensic medicine in cases of asphyxia due to airway obstruction and/or immobilization of chest and abdomen (Perthes' syndrome). Histopatholo

High-Power Terahertz Emission from Picosecond Nano-Plasma Switching Driven by Secondary Electron Emission Avalanche.

Developing compact, high-power sources in the terahertz (THz) gap (0.1-10 THz) remains a critical challenge in modern electronics, and nano-plasma device (NPD) represents a promising pathway to close this gap. Here, we advance the fundamental understanding of NPDs by showing that an ultra-dense (∼1025 m-3) electron sheet, confined within ∼10 nm above the substrate surface, drives the picosecond nano-plasma switching through secondary electron emission avalanche (SEEA) on the substrate surface. This mechanism was validated by analytical theories, particle-in-cell simulations, and THz experiment

Characterizing bone injuring in avalanche fatalities in the French Alps: preliminary insights from post-mortem CT scans.

BACKGROUND: Avalanches present a significant risk in mountainous environments, frequently causing severe trauma and death. While asphyxia is often the primary cause of mortality (65-100 %), the incidence of traumatic injuries, particularly bone fractures, may be increasing due to evolving recreational practices and climate change. This study aims to characterize the distribution and types of fractures in avalanche fatalities. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study at Grenoble Alpes University Hospital from April 2023 to April 2025. It included deceased adult avalanche victims with post-m

Artificial intelligence and health empowerment in rural communities and landslide- or avalanche-isolated contexts: real case at a fictitious location.

Through a series of case studies, we have pretested the capabilities and reliability of the Large Language Models (LLM), Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4 (GPT-4) and OpenAI o3 reasoning model (o3) in educational and healthcare contexts. Based on this knowledge, we took a step further by testing these technologies in an authentic patient case set in a fictitious location. The context for this brief case report relates to the fact that, in the first quarter of 2025, fewer patients lacked an assigned GP compared to previous years-a positive trend. However, this offers little relief to those c
