ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Malaria continues to be a major public health burden in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly due to the emergence of drug-resistant Plasmodium strains and limited access to effective therapies. In African traditional medicine, Azadirachta indica A. Juss., Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf., and Psidium guajava L. are commonly used for managing malaria. However, their combined efficacy and safety as a standardized polyherbal preparation remain underexplored.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This study evaluated the antimalarial efficacy and safety profile of a polyherbal formulation

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Neem (Azadirachta indica; Meliaceae) is widely known for its cold pressed seed oil, mainly used as insecticide, but also for cosmetic, medicinal and agricultural uses. The seed oil is widely employed in the Indian subcontinent, and the leaves seem to have a lower relevance, but the ethnobotanical information of Bali (Indonesia) considers the utilisation of leaves for medicinal properties.
AIM OF THE STUDY: We report ethnopharmacological information about current uses of neem, in particular of the leaves, besides the insecticidal one, we discuss on the historica

Malaria transmission is a serious emergence in urban and semiurban areas worldwide, becoming a major international public health concern. Malaria is transmitted through the bites of Anopheles mosquitoes. The extensive employ of synthetic pesticides leads to negative effects on human health and the environment. Recently, plant-synthesized nanoparticles have been proposed as highly effective mosquitocides. In this research, we synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNP) using the Azadirachta indica seed kernel extract as reducing and stabilizing agent. AgNP were characterized by UV-vis spectrophotom

The present study was undertaken to investigate short-term (21 days) effects of oral administration of Azadirachta indica leaf extract and vanadate, separately and in combination, on the activities of antioxidant enzymes in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Vanadate is a remarkable antidiabetic agent and shows insulin mimetic effect. However, severe toxicity is associated with vanadate when used in high concentration while at lower concentration the hypoglycemic property of vanadate is reduced. So, we used a low dose of vanadate in combination with A. indica leaf extract and evaluated thei

This study investigated the potential of Brassica napus L. to remediate heavy metals from surgical industry wastewater through the application of neem (Azadirachta indica L.) leaf extract and nZVI. Plants exposed to untreated wastewater exhibited significant reductions in growth and photosynthetic pigments. However, the combined application of neem extract and nZVI improved plant height by 318%, number of leaves by 300%, leaf area by 329%, and root length by 63% at 100% wastewater concentration. The treatment also decreased oxidative stress indicators, including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by 16%

The progression of secondary complications in type 2 diabetes (T2D) has been linked to oxidative stress caused by hyperglycemia. Therefore, the control of hyperglycemia is the main target in the treatment of diabetes. The present study investigated the scavenging and ameliorative potentials of different fractions of Azadirachta indica (A. indica) ethanol stem bark extract in Fe2+-induced oxidative injury in hepatic tissue as well as their ability to inhibit enzymes linked to diabetes and in enhancing muscle glucose uptake via some in vitro and ex vivo experimental models. The results revealed

Given that ovarian cancer is a major health concern for women worldwide, we explored the potential of Indian medicinal plants, namely Curcuma longa (Turmeric), Azadirachta indica (Neem), and Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari) via a combined approach of network pharmacology and molecular docking. Initially, bioactive phytochemicals of these plants were sourced from the IMPPAT and SwissTargetPrediction databases, resulting in the identification of 202 compounds along with 1,124 corresponding protein targets. These were then compared with ovarian cancer-related genes obtained from the GeneCards data

This investigation attempts to evaluate the effect of diet additives via aqueous or ethanolic herbal extracts from Azadirachta indica leaves on Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Five dietary categories were assigned to the fish: the first category (N1, with no extract) was kept under control conditions; two categories contained aqueous extract (N2 (1.0 g/kg) and N3 (2.0 g/kg); and two categories contained ethanolic extract, N4 (1.0 g/kg) and N5 (2.0 g/kg), with each group being fed for 60 days. After the feeding trial, Aeromonas hydrophila was injected intraperitoneally into fish for 14 day

The burden of human schistosomiasis, a known but neglected tropical disease in Sub-Saharan Africa, has been worrisome in recent years. It is becoming increasingly difficult to tackle schistosomiasis with praziquantel, a drug known to be effective against all Schistosoma species, due to reports of reduced efficacy and resistance. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the antischistosomal potential of phytochemicals from Azadirachta indica against proteins that have been implicated as druggable targets for the treatment of schistosomiasis using computational techniques. In this study, sixty

The brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) is prevalent on canids in Trinidad. It is directly (by causing anaemia) and indirectly (by acting as a vector of tick-borne pathogens) responsible for morbidity and mortalities in the canine population. The most commonly used commercial acaricides available to pet owners in Trinidad are amitraz and fipronil. Often, these acaricides may be abused and misused in a desperate attempt to rid pets of ticks. The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of amitraz and fipronil with the herbal alternative, neem (Azadirachta indica). Triplicate in

The rapid emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance has become a global public health concern that threatens the effective treatment of infectious diseases. One major approach adopted to overcome antimicrobial resistance is the use of plant extracts individually and/or with combination of antibiotics with plant extracts, which may lead to new ways of treating infectious diseases and essentially representing a potential area for further future investigations. In this study, the antifungal activities of Azadirachta indica leaf and Catharanthus roseus flower extracts against fluconazole-re

Myiasis is an uncommon pathology of parasitic infestation in live mammals by fly larvae (maggots). The fly grows and gets nourished by invading host tissue. Epidemiology of Myiasis has been recorded in tropical regions of world. No any documentation has been found on Ayurvedic intervention for anal myiasis management. The study is about a 49-year male having anal myiasis along and interno-external piles together. The case was managed by local application of Neem oil (Medicated oil of Azadirachta indica Linn.) soaked gauze piece once a day on daily bases in the invaded tissues of myiasis along

BACKGROUND: A critical outcome of periodontal diseases is degradation of collagen in the periodontal tissues, by enzymes such as Matrix Metallo-Proteinases (MMPs). Doxycycline is known to down-regulate the activity of MMPs. Azadirachta indica (Neem) and Aloe vera are herbs known to have an anti-inflammatory effect. The present study was designed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of Neem and Aloe vera by way of its inhibitory effect on MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity in cases of chronic periodontitis and compare it with doxcycline.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 subjects were enrolled in

Mouse hepatitis virus (MHV)-induced murine neuroinflammation serves as a model to study acute meningoencephalomyelitis, hepatitis, and chronic neuroinflammatory demyelination; which mimics certain pathologies of the human neurologic disease, multiple sclerosis (MS). MHV-induced acute neuroinflammation occurs due to direct glial cell dystrophy instigated by central nervous system (CNS)-resident microglia and astrocytes, in contrast to peripheral CD4+T cell-mediated myelin damage prevalent in the experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model of MS. Viral envelope Spike glycoprotein-media

A compound (AIPLAI (Azadirachta indica PLA(2) inhibitor)) purified from the methanolic leaf extract of A. indica (Neem) inhibits the cobra and Russell's viper venoms (RVVs) phospholipase A(2) enzymes in a dose-dependent manner. Inhibition of catalytic and tested pharmacological properties of cobra venom (Naja naja and Naja kaouthia) PLA(2) enzymes by AIPLAI is significantly higher (P<0.05) compared to the inhibition of PLA(2) enzymes of crude RVV (Daboia russelli) when tested under the same condition. Kinetic study reveals that in in vitro condition, AIPLAI inhibits the purified N. kaouthia PL
