Twenty patients with contact dermatitis, eighteen with atopic dermatitis, two with mixed dermatitis, and 20 controls were examined for the number of T and B lymphocytes, and serum concentrations of IgD and IgE. Significantly higher counts of B lymphocytes bearing IgE and high serum IgE values were found in the atopic group. No other significant differences were found. In particular, we found a normal frequency of IgD bearing lymphocytes in contact dermatitis, and normal T lymphocyte counts in both groups of patients.

T and B lymphocytes were quantified in peripheral blood of thirty patients with South American pemphigus foliaceus according to their ability to form rosettes with sheep erythrocytes (E) or sheep erythrocytes sensitized with antibody an complement (EAC). In 10 blood samples from mothers who were studied after the delivery of a male infant and who had Y-body-containing cells in their circulations (mean value, 0.06%) the proportions of surface-Ig- and Y-body-positive lymphocytes were determined after passage through nylon wool. In each case one part of the sample was treated with pronase before the nylon wool incubation and the other was not. Passage through nylon wool of maternal lymphocytes not treated with pronase resulted in a drastic decrease of fetal cells, since only 1 Y-body-containing cell was found in 1 of the 10 maternal blood samples

Thymus derived (T) and bone-marrow derived (B) lymphocytes were quantitated in 11 untreated patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) and in 11 age and sex matched controls. Large granular lymphocytes (LGL) may exert regulatory influences on B cell immunoglobulin synthesis. We, therefore, investigated the influence of LGL from controls and B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients (B-CLL) on control B cell proliferation to costimulation with the F(ab')2 fragment of goat antihuman mu and B cell growth factor (BCGF). Purified LGL (greater than 90% by morphology) from control and B-CLL peripheral blood were added in various concentrations to purified control B cells and incubated with anti-mu and BCGF for 3 days.
