Human BK virus (BKV) infection is known to occur mostly during childhood with the establishment of latent infection with no tissue damage or clinical manifestations. However, conditions causing immunosuppression can lead to increased virus replication and tissue damage. Although the tissues most commonly involved are the kidneys, bladder, ureters and, to some extent, brain tissue, there are some reports that suggest that BKV may cause multisystemic infections. In this case, a 12-month-old child was seen to suffer from multiple gastrointestinal infections. This prompted a search for immunodefic

BK virus (BKV) is associated with kidney and bladder disease after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) but less is known about the seroprevalence of pre-transplant antibodies to BKV in children. We measured BKV IgG antibody titers in 36 children before HCT. BKV IgG antibodies were detected in all 36 patients, with 28/36 (77.8%) developing BK viremia in the first 100 days. Pre-HCT BKV IgG antibody titers >1:40,960 were protective against later BK viremia ≥10,000 copies/ml. The seroprevalence of antibodies to BKV is high in children undergoing HCT and post-transplant BK viremia, which is as

Human polyomavirus BK virus (BKV) is a double-stranded DNA virus that infects approximately 90 % of the general population as a subclinical or mild infection. In immunosuppressed patients, such as HIV cases, BKV may be reactivated resulting hemorrhagic cystitis and tubulointerstitial nephritis. However, there are limited studies on prevalence and molecular epidemiology of BKV in Iran. We therefore aimed to evaluate the prevalence and subtypes of BKV in Iranian HIV patients. A total of 99 patients with HIV infection were enrolled in the study. Presence of BKV DNA in plasma was evaluated by nest

The BK polyoma virus has, in recent years, become a significant cause of renal allograft dysfunction and failure. Among 260 adult kidney transplant recipients, those with biopsy-proven BK virus nephropathy (BKVN) were compared with those without BKVN with regard to gender, age, race, rejection episodes, time on dialysis, number of organs transplanted, HLA match, live donor versus deceased donor, cold ischemia time, delayed graft function, cytomegalovirus (CMV) serostatus of donor and recipient, induction therapy, and maintenance immunosuppression. Episodes of rejection (35.7% of patients with

UNLABELLED: BK virus nephropathy (BKVN) is an increasingly recognized cause of kidney allograft loss and is thought to be related to the newer, more potent immunosuppressive agents. Conflicting information has been reported on risk factors for BK infection.
PURPOSE: To determine incidence, associated factors, and outcome of BKVN in our kidney transplant population in order to improve identification and management.
METHODS: Kidney transplants from January 2000 to December 2005 were retrospectively reviewed. Data were collected for patients with biopsy-proven BKVN including age, sex, body mass

We report a case of BK virus-induced tubulointerstitial nephritis in a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Primary BK virus infection was exacerbated by chemotherapy-induced immunodeficiency. Careful administration of chemotherapy and anti-viral therapy prevented further damage. This diagnosis should be considered in children who experience renal dysfunction during cancer treatment.

BK polyomavirus has become an important etiologic agent responsible for significant morbidity in renal transplant recipients. This virus can be detected in transitional cells in the urine (decoy cells) using cytology, but correlation with allograft function status and histologic evidence of renal involvement is poor. Accurate diagnosis of BK polyomavirus infection requires a high index of suspicion and utilization of ancillary diagnostic techniques in many cases. Electron microscopy is very sensitive in depicting the presence of BK virions, but the finding of viral particles is not by itself d

Macroscopic morphology, histology and ultrastructure of BK virus (BKV)-induced hamster and mouse tumors were investigated. Groups of animals were immunosuppressed to study the relationship between immune system and BKV oncogenesis. Ependymomas had the highest incidence, followed by tumors of pancreatic islets, osteosarcomas, lymphomas and sarcomas, sometimes associated in the same animal. All the tumors were found to be BKV specific. Ependymomas showed the shortest latency, infiltrated surrounding tissues but did not metastasize. Pseudo-rosettes were common and basal bodies were observed. Atyp

BACKGROUND: There are limited approved therapeutic options for BK viremia management in kidney transplant patients. We performed the present study to investigate the effect of Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment on BK viremia and BK virus-associated nephropathy (BKVN) in kidney transplant patients.
METHODS: A systematic search was performed in Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus for studies that investigated the effect of IVIG therapy on BK viremia and BKVN in kidney transplant patients. Observational studies and case series were considered eligible for inclusion in this study.

BACKGROUND: BK virus (BKV) infection is a significant complication in kidney transplant recipients, potentially leading to graft loss. The relationship between pre-transplant tacrolimus (TAC) pharmacokinetics and BKV infection risk remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether pre-transplant TAC blood concentration fluctuations are associated with BKV infection risk.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 135 living donor kidney transplant recipients at Hirosaki University between 2006 and March 2024. Patients were divided into BKV-infected (BKV) and non-infected (non-BKV)

BACKGROUND: Resolution of BK viremia is almost universally required before kidney transplant. Unfortunately, proven anti-BK viral therapies are limited. The Seraph 100 mimics the action of the natural glycocalyx, which binds pathogens via heparin sulfate proteoglycans. In this case report, we describe the use of this filter to facilitate the clearance of BK viremia.
METHODS: Our patient was a 14-year-old cardiac transplant recipient secondary to familial dilated cardiomyopathy. She developed BK nephropathy resulting in end stage kidney disease (ESKD). After failed medical management and immun

INTRODUCTION: Immunosuppression following kidney transplantation increases risk of BK polyomavirus reactivation, a common cause of graft dysfunction and failure. Subsequent retransplantation is a viable option that has not been extensively studied. This study further characterizes BK Virus Nephropathy (BKVN) and retransplantation in the most expansive population to date, geographically, temporally, and in magnitude.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The OPTN/UNOS database was used to identify patients who received kidney or kidney-pancreas transplantation between 1987 and 2018 that resulted in BKVN-attr

BK virus infection is one of the common complications after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation(HSCT), which is also one of the reasons of the hemorrhagic cystitis. In recent years, although there are more studies of the risk factors related with human BK virus infection after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, the risk factors related with BKV-associated hemorrhagio cystitis(BKV-HC) remain to be elucidated. Diagnosis of BK virus infection is mainly based on quantitative PCR of blood or urine. An effective strategy for treatment of these patients is the adoptive transfer of T lymphocy

IMPORTANCE: BK virus infection is a significant complication of modern immunosuppression used in kidney transplantation. Viral reactivation occurs first in the urine (BK viruria) and is associated with a high risk of transplant failure. There are currently no therapies to prevent or treat BK virus infection. Quinolone antibiotics have antiviral properties against BK virus but efficacy at preventing this infection has not been shown in prospective controlled studies.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if levofloxacin can prevent BK viruria in kidney transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: BK virus nephropathy (BKVN) is an important cause of renal graft loss in recent years. The aims of this study are to (1) describe the management of patients undergoing retransplantation after allograft loss in the setting of BKVN and (2) to identify risk factors for BK virus replication in the retransplant.
METHODS: This retrospective study compiled data on adult patients undergoing repeat transplantation after previous loss of allograft to BKVN from six U.S. centers. Clinical, laboratory, and histopathologic data for both the transplant that failed because of BKVN and the retrans

BACKGROUND: Polyoma BK virus nephropathy is a serious complication after renal transplantation and is associated with a high rate of allograft failure. Progressive infection with BK virus in immunocompromised renal transplant recipients occurs in detectable stages: Viruria, viremia, then nephropathy.
METHODS: In January, 2006, we initiated a plasma screening policy for all new transplant recipients, with monthly blood testing for BK virus by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Between January 1, 2006, and February 28, 2007, 66 renal transplants were performed at our center. The 11 patients with
