Detection of IgE antibodies to bacitracin using a commercially available streptavidin-linked solid phase in a patient with anaphylaxis to triple antibiotic ointment.

BACKGROUND: Bacitracin is a commonly used topical antibiotic that has on occasion been reported to cause anaphylaxis. Evidence of the role of bacitracin specific IgE in such reactions has been demonstrated by skin testing. Because of the potential for provoking a systemic reaction by skin testing, it would be advantageous to develop an in vitro test for bacitracin specific IgE. OBJECTIVE: To report our experience coupling bacitracin to a solid phase and using it to detect specific IgE to bacitracin by fluorescent enzyme immunoassay. METHODS: A patient with a history of recurrent anaphylaxis

[Prevention of bacterial infections after bone marrow graft by broad-spectrum oral antibiotics, absorbable (pefloxacin, penicillin) and non absorbable (cephalosporin, gentamycin, bacitracin)].

In a consecutive series of 65 patients treated by allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, we have compared the efficacy on prevention of bacterial infection of total gut decontamination with oral non absorbable antibiotics or with oral absorbable broad spectrum antibiotics. On day-8, all patients were randomly allocated to one group: Group I received orally pefloxacin 400 mg/day and penicillin 3 M UI/day. Group II received capsules containing cephalothin 250 mg, gentamicin 20 mg and bacitracin 150 UI. Each patient received 9 to 12 capsules per day according to body weight. Patients less than 5

Brain-targeted delivery of PEGylated nano-bacitracin A against Penicillin-sensitive and -resistant Pneumococcal meningitis: formulated with RVG29 and Pluronic® P85 unimers.

Pneumococcal meningitis (PM), caused by Streptococcus pneumonia, remains a high-burden disease in developing countries. Antibiotic therapy has been limited due to the inefficiency of drug transport across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the emergence of drug-resistant strains. In our preliminary study, PEGylated nano-self-assemblies of bacitracin A (PEGylated Nano-BA12K) demonstrated a strong antibacterial potency against S. pneumonia. In this study, the potential application of this micelle for the treatment of both Penicillin-sensitive and -resistant PM was studied. To address BBB-targetin

Oral neomycin and bacitracin are effective in preventing surgical site infections in elective colorectal surgery: a multicentre, randomized, parallel, single-blinded trial (COLORAL-1).

Several regimens of oral and intravenous antibiotics (OIVA) have been proposed with contradicting results, and the role of mechanical bowel preparation (MBP) is still controversial. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of oral antibiotic prophylaxis in preventing Surgical Site Infections (SSI) in elective colorectal surgery. In a multicentre trial, we randomized patients undergoing elective colorectal resection surgery, comparing the effectiveness of OIVA versus intravenous antibiotics (IVA) regimens to prevent SSI as the primary outcome (NCT04438655). In addition to intravenous Amoxici

Comparative efficacy of a yeast product and bacitracin methylene disalicylate in enhancing early growth and intestinal maturation in broiler chicks from breeder hens of different ages.

The intestine of the newly hatched chick is immature at hatch. Yeast contains nucleotides and β-glucans that enhance intestinal development and chick growth. Accordingly, a 14-d experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a novel yeast product and bacitracin methylene disalicylate in enhancing early growth and intestinal maturation in chicks obtained from young (26-27 wk old) and old (58 to 59 wk old) breeder hens. Chicks (384) were randomly assigned to 8 dietary treatments. Treatment 1 (YH) consisted of chicks, from young hens, fed corn-soybean meal (SBM) diet alone. Treatment 2 (YHB

Antibiotic Repurposing: Conjugation of the Gram-Positive Only Peptide Antibiotic Bacitracin to a Bis-Catechol Siderophore Mimetic Imparts Potent Activity against Multi-Drug Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii.

The ongoing emergence of multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria is a grave concern and is exacerbated by the lack of innovative antibiotics under development. One approach to enhancing antibacterial efficacy is to determine whether derivatives of antibiotics that are normally used to treat infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria might be made effective against Gram-negative bacteria by circumventing permeability barriers and antibiotic deactivation processes. Sideromycins (siderophore-antibiotic conjugates) are recognized by outer membrane protein receptors to initiate the acquisition of essen

Potential Risk of Spreading Resistance Genes within Extracellular-DNA-Dependent Biofilms of Streptococcus mutans in Response to Cell Envelope Stress Induced by Sub-MICs of Bacitracin.

Antibiotics are used to treat or prevent some types of bacterial infection. The inappropriate use of antibiotics unnecessarily promotes antibiotic resistance and increases resistant bacteria, and controlling these bacteria is difficult. While the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria is a serious problem, the behavior of drug-resistant bacteria is not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the behavior of Streptococcus mutans, a major etiological agent of dental caries that is resistant to bacitracin, which is a cell wall-targeting antibiotic, and focused on biofilm formation in the p

In vitro and in vivo evaluation of poly-3-hydroxybutyric acid-sodium alginate as a core-shell nanofibrous matrix with arginine and bacitracin-nanoclay complex for dermal reconstruction of excision wound.

The protective layer of the body, the skin is often prone to damage due to several factors like trauma, accidents, stress and hazardous exposure. This requires the skin to regenerate itself which is a finely regulated process. To hasten the process and prevent further damage, the dressing material is of prime importance. Herein, we fabricated poly-3-hydroxybutyric acid (P)-sodium alginate (S)-(core-shell) nanofibrous matrix as protective scaffold for the skin tissue regeneration in excision wound model. The arginine (A) and layered double hydroxides-bacitracin (LB) were incorporated into the c

Clostridioides difficile couples responses to host nutritional immunity and a commensal-derived antibiotic to enable growth in the gut.

The Gram-positive opportunistic pathogen Clostridioides difficile colonizes the gut by adapting to an array of threats from the host and the microbiome. A potential threat from the microbiome is the antimicrobial peptide bacitracin, which is produced by the commensal Bacillus licheniformis and prevents dephosphorylation and recycling of undecaprenyl phosphate, a lipid carrier essential in cell wall biogenesis. Gram-positive bacteria typically use multiprotein membrane complexes called Bce modules to sense and respond to bacitracin. We identified a Bce module in C. difficile that incorporates t

Reduction in CSF shunt infection over a 10-year period associated with the application of concentrated topical antibiotic powder directly to surgical wounds prior to closure.

OBJECT: The application of concentrated topical antibiotic powder directly to surgical wounds has been associated with a reduction in wound infection in cardiac, spinal, and deep brain stimulator surgery. As a result of these findings, the corresponding author began systematically applying concentrated bacitracin powder directly to wounds during shunt surgery more than 5 years ago. The object of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of concentrated bacitracin powder applied directly to wounds prior to closure during cranial shunt surgery and to evaluate the association between shunt inf

Evaluating surface coatings to reduce bone cement adhesion to point of care 3D printed molds in the intraoperative setting.

BACKGROUND: Polymethyl methacrylate, or "bone cement," can be used intraoperatively to replace damaged or diseased bone and to deliver local antibiotics. 3D printed molds allow surgeons to form personalized and custom shapes with bone cement. One factor hindering the clinical utility of anatomically accurate 3D printed molds is that cured bone cement can be difficult to remove due to the strong adhesion between the mold and the bone cement. One way to reduce the adhesion between the 3D printed mold and the cured bone cement is with the use of a surface coating, such as a lubricant. This study
