Altered patterns of abdominal muscle activation in patients with chronic low back pain.

This study investigated patterns of abdominal muscle recruitment during the abdominal drawing in manoeuvre in subjects with chronic low back pain (CLBP) and radiological diagnosis of spondylolysis or spondylolisthesis. Data were collected using surface electromyography from 12 physically active subjects with CLBP and 10 controls. The control subjects displayed an ability to preferentially activate internal oblique with minimal activation of upper rectus abdominis during the action of drawing in the abdominal wall. The group with CLBP were unable to achieve this. This finding may reflect the pr

Assessment of muscle fiber types transformation in rats with discogenic low back pain using diffusion tensor image of paraspinal muscles.

BACKGROUND: The onset of discogenic lower back pain (DLBP) was strongly associated with fiber-type transformation in the paraspinal muscles. Management of DLBP would be greatly benefited from an objective, noninvasive biomarker for assessing fiber composition. Our study aimed to explore the value of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in evaluating fiber-type transformation, which contributed to improve diagnosis and intervention strategies on DLBP. METHODS: According to time since model establishment, ninety healthy female Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into the 1st month group,3rd mon

Spinal Muscle Health in Chronic Low Back Pain: An Integrated Narrative Review of Muscle Quality, Function, and Clinical Implications.

Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a leading cause of disability and is characterized by marked clinical heterogeneity. Structural imaging remains fundamental for diagnosis and treatment planning, yet anatomical abnormalities alone do not fully explain differences in pain, disability, physical performance, or treatment response. Increasing evidence implicates paraspinal muscle morphology, composition, neuromuscular behavior, endurance, and physical conditioning as complementary determinants of spinal function. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence within the concept of spinal muscle

Multifidus Muscle Size and Symmetry in Ballroom Dancers with and without Low Back Pain.

The incidence of low back pain (LBP) among elite ballroom dancers is high and understanding associations between muscle morphology and pain may provide insight into treatment or training options. Research has linked multifidus muscle atrophy to LBP in the general and some athletic populations; however, this has not been examined in ballroom dancers. We compared the lumbar multifidus cross-sectional area (CSA) at rest in 57 elite level ballroom dancers (age 23±2.4 years; height, 174±11 cm; mass, 64±10 kg) divided into one of three pain groups, according to their self-reported symptoms, 1) LBP g

Effect of acute noxious stimulation to the leg or back on muscle synergies during walking.

This study aimed to examine how acute muscle pain affects muscle coordination during gait with consideration of muscle synergies (i.e., group of muscles activated in synchrony), amplitude of muscle activity and kinematics. A secondary aim was to determine whether any adaptation was specific to pain location. Sixteen participants walked on a treadmill during 5 conditions [control, low back pain (LBP), washout LBP, calf pain (CalfP), and washout CalfP]. Five muscle synergies were identified for all of the conditions. Cross-validation analysis showed that muscle synergy vectors extracted for the

Degeneration of the extensor muscle group in a surgical low back and leg pain population.

The spinal muscles have received great attention in low back pain (LBP) with suggestions of a de-conditioning syndrome. It is not known whether it is a long or short term consequence of LBP. This study explored the cross section area (CSA) and muscle quality of the spinal extensor group in LBP patients referred to a spinal clinic. MRI scans of 100 annoymised patients were retrospectively reviewed; sagittal and transverse (from levels L3-5) images were archived and analysed to determine CSA and levels of fat infiltration of the extensor muscle groups. Forty six patients had spinal stenosis (28

A preliminary model study of the equine back including activity of longissimus dorsi muscle.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Identifying the underlying problem of equine back pain and diseases of the spine are significant problems in veterinary orthopaedics. A study to validate a preliminary biomechanical model of the equine back based on CT images including longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle is therefore important. OBJECTIVES: Validation of the back model by comparing the shortening of LD muscles in the model with integrated EMG (IEMG) at stance during induced lateral flexion of the spine. METHODS: Longissimus dorsi muscle activity at stance has been used for validation. EMG electrodes we
