Low Back Pain and Spondylosis.

Low back pain is highly prevalent, affecting a vast majority of the adult population at some point in their lifetime. Thorough history and physical examination is critically important in evaluating these patients and screening for potentially serious conditions. Imaging should be guided by the history and physical examination, particularly when there is concern for serious conditions and/or a focal neurological deficit present. Adequate treatment of patients with low back pain often requires a multidisciplinary approach, involving several medical specialties. Patients with acute axial low back

Massage for low-back pain.

BACKGROUND: Low-back pain (LBP) is one of the most common and costly musculoskeletal problems in modern society. It is experienced by 70% to 80% of adults at some time in their lives. Massage therapy has the potential to minimize pain and speed return to normal function. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of massage therapy for people with non-specific LBP. SEARCH METHODS: We searched PubMed to August 2014, and the following databases to July 2014: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, CINAHL, LILACS, Index to Chiropractic Literature, and Proquest Dissertation Abstracts. We also checked reference lists.

Low back pain and obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Low back pain poses a significant problem in clinics and public health. It presents one of the main problems with adults, since 70-80% of adults experience it at least once in their lifetime. Causes of the low back pain are numerous and often unknown. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study is to find the most prevalent age group, pain localisation, and the frequency of physical therapy sessions in obese and non-obese subjects with LBP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study has been conducted by the Physical Rehabilitation Service of the Occupational Medicine Institute, during one year per

Back pain and mental retardation.

UNLABELLED: A 25-year-old African-American male with mental retardation was brought to the hospital by his caregiver with a chief complaint of low back pain for four months, complicated by recent anorexia and weight loss. Lumbar spine x-ray showed spondylosis at L2-L3 with normal sacroiliac joints, hip and femur; MRI showed a fracture of the L2 vertebral body. Consequently he underwent L2 anterior corpectomy with bone graft replacement and fusion. Spinal surgical biopsy revealed large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma with immunostaining studies suggesting lung origin. A chest CT scan showed a lar

Pregnancy and low back pain.

Back pain is ubiquitous in today's society and is particularly common during pregnancy. There are multiple factors contributing to these symptoms during pregnancy including pelvic changes as well as alterations to loading. Potential imaging modalities are limited during pregnancy due to the desire to limit ionizing radiation exposure to the fetus. Treatments are generally conservative, exercise-based interventions and alternative modalities may also be considered. Low back pain associated with pregnancy does generally resolve postpartum.

Chemonucleolysis in low back pain.

Low back pain caused by an internally disrupted disc is a universal unresolved problem. Many treatment options have been tried and many are in development, but few have satisfactory long-term results. Although the most often used excuse for inconsistent results is poor patient selection and the lack of objective evaluation parameters, the diagnosis is often elusive and definitive selection criteria for any specific treatment modality is usually unproven. Chemonucleolysis performed by various techniques, is a cost-effective and simple method for treating both low back pain and sciatica caused b

Interventional techniques for back pain.

Most Americans will be afflicted by some form of spine-related pain in their lifetime. In older patients, the most frequent source of back pain is lumbar spinal stenosis or vertebral compression fracture. Although most back pain is self-limited, some patients will require interventional techniques. This article reviews minimally invasive techniques for treating back pain, lumbosacral radicular pain, lumbar spinal stenosis, and compression fractures.

Recurrent back pain and fevers.

An elderly woman presented with her third episode of back pain, fever and neurological deficits. She subsequently developed pseudogout of the knee, and a diagnosis was made of systemic calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPPD) involving the spine and causing intermittent cauda equina syndrome. This case illustrates the difficulty of differentiating infection from CPPD.

[Differential diagnosis of back pain].

Back pain is one of the most frequent clinical pictures encountered in a physician's practice. It can pose a great burden on the individual and in addition have a multifactorial origin. It can be caused by intervertebral discs, vertebral joints, nerve roots, ligaments, sacroiliac joints, or a combination of the above. Back pain, as a symptom of a systemic disease, can also be a warning signal of grave disorders such as malignancies or in the event of aortic aneurysm. The well-considered choice of appropriate diagnostic procedures and suitable treatment requires a thorough knowledge of this mul

Low-back pain in athletes.

While most occurrences of low-back pain in athletes are self-limited sprains or strains, persistent, chronic, or recurrent symptoms are frequently associated with degenerative lumbar disc disease or spondylolytic stress lesions. The prevalence of radiographic evidence of disc degeneration is higher in athletes than it is in nonathletes; however, it remains unclear whether this correlates with a higher rate of back pain. Although there is little peer-reviewed clinical information on the subject, it is possible that chronic pain from degenerative disc disease that is recalcitrant after intensive

[Low back pain and sciatica].

In order to see the patients with low back pain and/or sciatica, it is most important to consider the pathophysiology of symptoms. We should know that the image findings such as X-ray and MRI do not always show the cause of symptom. Because degenerative changes in lumbar spine are common findings in asymptomatic group compared to symptomatic patients with low back pain and sciatica. According to pathophysiology (nerve root syndrome, cauda equina syndrome, facet syndrome, discogenic pain syndrome and intermittent claudication for low back pain), the treatment for low back pain and sciatica were

Low back pain and posture.

This study was designed to analyse postural aberrations of the back and lower back region in patients with acute and chronic low back pain and to investigate the accordance of clinical and radiological assessments. Fifty patients with acute and 50 with chronic low back pain and 50 controls were studied and a detailed spinal physical examination was performed. In addition, the angles of thoracic kyphosis, lumbar lordosis and sacral inclination were assessed radiologically. Differences among the three groups, correlations of radiological parameters with each other and with clinical parameters su

Perspective on low back pain.

Low back pain is a common and expensive ailment among the working population. Despite the increasing amount of basic and clinical knowledge on low back pain, the precise causes of almost all cases cannot yet be defined. The tissues that could be the sources of pain in the low back have been better identified. The validity of the commonly used diagnosis of facet syndrome is now being questioned, and a favorable response to injection of the facet joints should not be considered an indication for posterior lumbar fusion. Studies continue to indicate that total body vibration and cigarette smoking

Epidemiology of low back pain.

At present, although there have been many epidemiological studies of risk factors for low back pain, there are few risk factors established in prospective studies; and our understanding of them remains relatively crude. Individuals in jobs requiring manual materials handling, particularly repeated heavy lifting and lifting while twisting, are at increased risk of back pain leading to work absence. In addition, exposure to whole-body vibration and job requirements for static postures are associated with back pain. Individual trunk strength has not been consistently demonstrated as associated wi

[Back pain after epidural anesthesia].

A 24-year-old female patient underwent a minor orthopaedic procedure under epidural anaesthesia. She had a past history of lumbar backache. The epidural anaesthetic was carried out with the patient sitting. However, she had an acute vagal reaction, with loss of consciousness and forward headfall. Thirty-six hours later, the patient complained of severe pains diffusing all over her vertebral column, together with sciatica and paravertebral muscle contraction which did not respond to drug treatment. An epidural abscess or haematoma was ruled out. The pain finally disappeared after a few days of

Compensable back pain and migrants.

Ten years of cases of compensable back pain from a rehabilitation centre were reviewed for evidence that is relevant to the strongly negative stereotypes that are held commonly about migrant workers. The prevalence of migrant workers with back injuries was found to be similar to that in the occupations with higher accident liabilities in the surrounding municipalities. The relative proportion of musculoligamentous injuries and the more objectively confirmable back injuries was not related to the country of birth. Better predictors of treatment outcome were: the time that had elapsed between th

Back pain and trunk list.

An association of trunk list with back pain was recorded in 100 patients, 5.6% of those attending a back pain clinic. Twice as many patients listed to the left as to the right. A total of 49 patients fulfilled the criterion of a symptomatic lumbar disc lesion, and 20 required surgical excision of the disc. The side of the list was not related to the side of the sciatica nor to the topographic position of the disc in relation to the nerve root. There is some evidence that the side of the list may be related to hand or leg dominance.
