PURPOSE: To study, characterize and compare chromosome aberrations and karyotype anomalies among newborns from high (> 1.5 mGy/y) and normal (≤ 1.5 mGy/y) level natural radiation areas of monazite-sand bearing southwest coast of Kerala in India.

Organic extractants play a significant role in the selective removal of radioactive cations from waste streams. Although, literature on the selective removal of man-made radioactive material such as Americium (Am) is widespread, the selective removal of naturally occurring radioactive material such as Ra2+ is only mentioned sporadically. The contamination of water bodies by heavy metals and ionizing radiation is a critical environmental issue, which can affect water quality and, thus, human health. This study aimed to evaluate the water quality of the Boqueirão de Parelhas Dam in the Brazilian semiarid region. A 1-year study (2013-2014) was performed through the assessment of physicochemical parameters, heavy metal content, and radioactivity along with the mutagenicity potential of water using micronuclei test in Orechromis niloticus (in vivo) and the cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay in human lymphocytes (in vitro).

Total-body counters designed for clinical use have considerable advantage and application over other methods for the measurement of iron metabolism. An investigation may be performed on an out-patient basis and the need for faecal collections avoided.
