To resist and persist: Important factors in the pathogenesis of Bacteroides fragilis.

Bacteroides fragilis is a most frequent anaerobic pathogen isolated from human infections, particularly found in the abdominal cavity. Different factors contribute to the pathogenesis and persistence of B. fragilis at infection sites. The knowledge of the virulence factors can provide applicable information for finding alternative options for the antibiotic therapy and treatment of B. fragilis caused infections. Herein, a comprehensive review of the important B. fragilis virulence factors was prepared. In addition to B. fragilis toxin (BFT) and its potential role in the diarrhea and cancer dev

Distribution of Bacteroides forsythus genotypes in a Japanese periodontitis population.

Pulmonary disease is a well-known complication of Type 1 Gaucher disease (GD), although its incidence is not well established and its severity varies. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and extent of pulmonary involvement in patients with GD. Pulmonary involvement was assessed by history, physical examination and chest radiograph in 150 consecutive patients with Type 1 GD presenting at a specialized center for genetic diseases. Five patients were noted to have clinical evidence of pulmonary involvement. Full pulmonary function tests were performed in these five patients a

The antibiotic sensitivity of the Bacteroides fragilis group in the United Kingdom.

Eight hundred and sixty-two cultures of penicillin-resistant anaerobic Gram-negative bacilli collected from 14 centres in the United Kingdom were identified. Six hundred and fifty-one were members of the Bacteroides fragilis group, and their sensitivity to 14 antibiotics was determined by a microtitre method. Among the beta-lactams, moderate resistance to ampicillin (MIC greater than or equal to 8 mg/l) was common, (B. ovatus 100%, B. thetaiotaomicron 95%, B. fragilis 76%, B. distasonis 50%, B. vulgatus 25%) but high-level resistance (MIC greater than 128 mg/l) was uncommon (B. fragilis 4%, B.

Bacteraemia and seeding of capsulate Bacteroides spp. and anaerobic cocci.

The effect of capsulation on the ability of Bacteroides fragilis, B. asaccharolyticus and anaerobic gram-positive cocci to induce bacteraemia and seeding to various organs was investigated. The test species were injected into mice subcutaneously alone, or mixed with other aerobic or facultative organisms. Capsulate anaerobes were isolated more frequently from the blood, spleen, liver, and kidneys of infected animals than were non-capsulate organisms. After injection of single anaerobic strains, capsulate organisms were recovered from 163 (39%) of 420 animals; non-capsulate anaerobes were recov

Bacteroides fragilis and Microbacterium as Microbial Signatures in Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and alopecia areata (AA) are organ-specific autoimmune diseases that frequently co-occur, suggesting shared immunological and microbial pathways. The gut microbiome has emerged as a key modulator of immune function, yet disease-specific microbial signatures remain poorly defined. Fecal samples from 51 participants (HT: n = 16, AA: n = 17, healthy controls: n = 18) aged 18-65 years were analyzed using shotgun metagenomic sequencing followed by multivariate statistical analyses. While alpha and beta diversity did not differ significantly across groups, taxonomic prof

Carbapenem resistance in Bacteroides fragilis: A review of molecular mechanisms.

Carbapenems are an applicable subclass of β-lactam drugs in the antibiotic therapy of anaerobic infections, especially for poly-microbial cases, due to their broad antimicrobial spectrum on aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Bacteroides fragilis is the most commonly recovered anaerobic bacteria in the clinical laboratories from mono- and poly-microbial infections. B. fragilis is relatively non-susceptible to different antibiotics, including β-lactams, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, and macrolides. Carbapenems are among the most effective drugs against B. fragilis strains with high-level resista

A case of Bacteroides pyogenes bacteremia secondary to liver abscess.

Bacteroides pyogenes, a non-spore-forming, anaerobic, gram-negative rod, is a component of the oral flora of animals and has, on occasion, been reported to cause human infection through dog or cat bites. We report the first case of B. pyogenes bacteremia secondary to liver abscess with no history of an animal bite. The microorganism was identified by 16S rRNA sequencing.

PhoB regulates the survival of Bacteroides fragilis in peritoneal abscesses.

In response to phosphate limitation, bacteria employ the Pho regulon, a specific regulatory network for phosphate acquisition. The two-component signal transduction system of PhoRB plays a crucial role in the induction of Pho regulon genes, leading to the adaptation to phosphate starvation. Herein, we identified the PhoRB system in Bacteroides fragilis, a commensal gut bacterium, and evaluated its role in gut colonization and survival in peritoneal abscesses. BF1575 and BF1576 encoded PhoR (sensor histidine kinase) and PhoB (response regulator) in the sequenced B. fragilis strain YCH46, respec

Clinical features of Bacteroides bacteremia and their association with colorectal carcinoma.

PURPOSE: We investigated the clinical features of Bacteroides bacteremia for 5 years to determine the risk factors for mortality and to ascertain whether bacteremia due to Bacteroides spp. is associated with colorectal carcinoma. METHODS: This study comprised a review of all patients with Bacteroides bacteremia at a teaching hospital in Tokyo from April 2003 to March 2008. We also conducted a case-control study between Bacteroides bacteremia and bacteremia due to other pathogens. RESULTS: During the study period, 25 cases of bacteremia were due to Bacteroides spp. Bacteroides bacteremia was

Bacteroides fragilis: a case study of bacteremia and septic arthritis.

A 67-year-old African-American male presented with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and knee pain. Four sets of blood cultures were collected and resulted in the growth of Bacteroides fragilis in all anaerobic bottles. Later, a fluid and tissue sample from the patient's knee grew the same species of bacteria. The patient was placed on intravenous antibiotics to fight the infection.

The effect of human bile on Bacteroides fragilis in health and disease.

Bacteroides fragilis is generally believed to be stimulated by bile. Although B. fragilis is rarely found in the human duodenum, it is relatively frequent in gall bladder infections. To investigate this paradox, the growth of B. fragilis in the human bile in both health and disease was studied, and compared with the effect of bovine and porcine bile. B. fragilis was stimulated by the bovine bile and inhibited by the porcine bile. The normal human bile was either bacteriostatic or inhibitory whereas bile from cholelithiatic patients, in 50% of cases, stimulated the growth of B. fragilis. This e

Purification and characterization of a ferredoxin from Rhizobium japonicum bacteroids.

An eight-iron, eight-sulfur ferredoxin from Rhizobium japonicum bacteroids of soybean root nodules has been purified to apparent homogeneity as judged by disc gel electrophoresis. The purification procedure included chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, Bio-Gel P-60, and hydroxylapatite. Specific activities of several purified preparations of bacteroid ferredoxin ranged from 1700 to 1900 nmol of C2H4 produced . min-1 . mg-1 in the reaction mediating electron transfer between illuminated chloroplasts and bacteroid nitrogenase. Neonatal pneumonia caused by members of the Bacteroides fragilis group.

Three infants who presented with premature rupture of membranes and neonatal pneumonia caused by organisms belonging to members of the B. fragilis group are reported. In all 3 instances, the organisms were recovered from tracheal aspirates and in 2 from blood cultures as well. Two of the newborns, treated with ampicillin and gentamicin, succumbed to their infections. The third, treated with clindamycin, recovered. Appropriate antibiotic coverage taking into account the penicillin-resistant anaerobes seems warranted for infants with neonatal pneumonia.

Bacteroides intestinalis-Driven Arabinoxylan Fermentation Mitigates Inflammatory and Metabolic Dysfunction.

Insufficient dietary fiber intake is strongly associated with gut microbiome dysfunction and an increased risk of noncommunicable diseases. Synergistic synbiotics, which pair defined microbial strains with their preferred carbohydrate substrates, offer a promising strategy to restore these functions. However, the rational design of such interventions remains challenging because of insufficient understanding of microbial fiber-degrading capacities and the host-relevant bioactivities of fermentation-derived metabolites. Here, we identify human colonic commensal Bacteroides intestinalis (B. intes
