Incidence, prevalence, and potential risk factors for diabetic foot ulceration: A retrospective review at a multidisciplinary centre in Barbados.

OBJECTIVE: Diabetes and lower extremity amputation rates in Barbados are among some of the highest globally, with peripheral neuropathy and peripheral vascular disease found to be independent risk factors for this population. Despite this, there is currently a lack of research evidence on rates of diabetic foot ulceration, which has amputation as its sequela. We aimed to evaluate the incidence and prevalence rates of active ulceration in a population of people with diabetes in Barbados. Secondly, we explored the risk factors for new/recurrent ulceration. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data were

Childhood malnutrition and maltreatment are linked with personality disorder symptoms in adulthood: Results from a Barbados lifespan cohort.

Both childhood malnutrition and maltreatment are associated with mental health problems that can persist into adulthood. Previously we reported that in Barbados, those with a history of infant malnutrition were more likely to report having experienced childhood maltreatment. Few studies, however, address the long-term outcomes of those who have been exposed to both. We assessed the unique and combined associations of a history of early malnutrition and childhood maltreatment with personality pathology in mid-adulthood in participants of the 47-year longitudinal Barbados Nutrition Study. We use

Urologic characteristics and sexual behaviors associated with prostate cancer in an african-Caribbean population in barbados, west indies.

Prostate cancer (PC) is the principal malignancy affecting African descent men in the Caribbean and the USA. Disparities in incidence, prevalence, and mortality in these populations are poorly understood. We evaluated the urologic characteristics and sexual behaviors of men with histologically confirmed PC (cases) and age-matched controls in the nationwide Prostate Cancer in a Black Population (PCBP) study conducted in Barbados. Cases were around 1.5 to 3 times more likely to report symptoms of prostatic enlargement, hematuria/hematospermia, and previous prostatitis. Sexually transmitted infec

Survival of neonates born below thirty-five weeks gestation in a developing country (Barbados, the West Indies).

A retrospective study of the survival of babies born below 35 weeks of gestation over a period of five years from 1987 to 1991 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital was analysed. The births of 433 were evaluated taking into consideration the birth weights, periods of gestation and mode of delivery. The fetal outcome in relation to these parameters were examined. Twin pregnancies were excluded. A poor outcome was noted in babies below 1000 g. Increasing survival rates were observed with increasing birth weight and increasing period of gestation. Babies below 30 weeks gestation had a poor survival rate. C

The morbidity pattern of children with sickle cell disorders admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Barbados (2009-2013).

A retrospective study was conducted by examining all the medical files of all the children with sickle cell anaemia (Hb SS) admitted from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2013. A total of 220 admission notes (59 patients aged 5 months-16 years) were analysed. Of these, 53.2% were boys; 85.8% of the patients had Hb SS. The most common reason for admission was vaso-occlusive crisis. Blood transfusions were used in 39.7% of admissions There were no deaths during the study period. We note the number of sickle cell-related admissions and morbidity has increased, along with an increase in the number of

Common variants on chromosome 2 and risk of primary open-angle glaucoma in the Afro-Caribbean population of Barbados.

Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Although a number of genetic loci have shown association or genetic linkage to monogenic forms of POAG, the identified genes and loci do not appear to have a major role in the common POAG phenotype. We seek to identify genetic loci that appear to be major risk factors for POAG in the Afro-Caribbean population of Barbados, West Indies. We performed linkage analyses in 146 multiplex families ascertained through the Barbados Family Study of Glaucoma (BFSG) and identified a strong linkage signal on chromosome 2p

An analysis of the subtypes of dengue fever infections in Barbados 2003-2007 by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction.

BACKGROUND: To perform a retrospective analysis of patients with IgM antibodies to dengue fever infection to determine the serotypes present by molecular techniques. A representative sample (approximately 20%/per year) of patients diagnosed with dengue fever infection were selected based on the detection of IgM antibodies in the acute phase serum sample. RNA was extracted from each sample and reverse transcribed. Following this, the amplicons were electrophoresed and serotyped based on band sizes. RESULTS: This study consisted of 71 males and 101 females ranging in age from 0 - 50+ yrs giving

Vitamin C in Barbados cherry Malpighia glabra L. pulp submitted to processing and to different forms of storage.

Ripe fruits of Barbados cherry Malpighia glabra L. proceeding from the fruit-growing section of Iguatemi Experimental Farm of Universidade Estadual de Maringa (PR), were triturated in a liquefier and hulled in a stainless steel sieve with 25 mesh. The bagasse (seeds and hull) was discarded and the vitamin C content was immediately determined, which was 1.79 g by 100 g of pulp. After that, the integral pulp was packed in glass flasks and submitted to the exhaustion and pasteurization processes and then hermetically closed. After the heat treatment the vitamin C content was 1.54 g by 100 g of pu

A genome-wide scan for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG): the Barbados Family Study of Open-Angle Glaucoma.

Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is characterized by damage to the optic nerve with associated loss of vision. Six named genetic loci have been identified as contributing to POAG susceptibility by genetic linkage analysis of mostly Caucasian families, and two of the six causative genes have been identified. The Barbados Family Study of Open-Angle Glaucoma (BFSG) was designed to evaluate the genetic component of POAG in a population of African descent. A genome-wide scan was performed on 1327 individuals from 146 families in Barbados, West Indies. Linkage results were based on models and para

Anterior horn cell degeneration in polymyositis associated with human T lymphotropic virus Type-1 in patients from Barbados.

Anterior horn cell degeneration has only occasionally been noted in patients with tropical spastic paraparesis associated with human T lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1) infection. We report on three adult patients with HTLV-1-associated polymyositis who had clinical evidence of anterior horn cell degeneration. One patient had moderate proximal weakness and muscle wasting in all four limbs, while two had mild upper limb weakness with more profound proximal weakness and wasting in the lower limbs. In all three patients, electromyographic findings were compatible with motor unit loss and muscle

Spatiotemporal Tools for Emerging and Endemic Disease Hotspots in Small Areas: An Analysis of Dengue and Chikungunya in Barbados, 2013-2016.

Dengue fever and other febrile mosquito-borne diseases place considerable health and economic burdens on small island nations in the Caribbean. Here, we used two methods of cluster detection to find potential hotspots of transmission of dengue and chikungunya in Barbados, and to assess the impact of input surveillance data and methodology on observed patterns of risk. Using Moran's I and spatial scan statistics, we analyzed the geospatial and temporal distribution of disease cases and rates across Barbados for dengue fever in 2013-2016, and a chikungunya outbreak in 2014. During years with hig

Retention of leptospiral agglutinins and long-term response to administration of monoclonal antibodies in vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) on Barbados.

In a study of 21 wild-caught Barbadian vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus), naturally-acquired leptospiral agglutinins were found to persist for over five years. Groups of seropositive as well as seronegative vervets were given a placebo, or full-strength monoclonal antibodies MCA F12C3 (Icterohaemorrhagiae copenhageni), or diluted F12C3 MCAs. They were challenged 24 hours later with a suspension of highly virulent leptospires (copenhageni) administered intraperitoneally. Immunoprotection was evident in animals receiving full strength MCAs as measured by their failure to develop an
