BACKGROUND: Although bariatric surgery has been shown to improve hepatic steatosis in morbidly obese patients, the effect of weight loss on hepatic fibrosis has not been determined. Since the prognosis of patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is closely related to the development of hepatic fibrosis, it is important to determine the hepatic histology of these patients after weight loss. We therefore evaluated the prevalence of hepatic fibrosis in morbidly obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery and assessed the correlation of histologic changes with weight loss.

OBJECTIVE: It was to report on Brazilian cases of neurological complications from bariatric surgery. The literature on the subject is scarce.
METHOD: Cases attended by neurologists in eight different Brazilian cities were collected and described in the present study.
RESULTS: Twenty-six cases were collected in this study. Axonal polyneuropathy was the most frequent neurological complication, but cases of central demyelination, Wernicke syndrome, optical neuritis, radiculits, meralgia paresthetica and compressive neuropathies were also identified. Twenty-one patients (80%) had partial or no r

Wernicke's encephalopathy is an acute, serious brain disorder resulting from thiamine deficiency, which is important as a cofactor in several enzymes associated with carbohydrate metabolism. The encephalopathy is most often associated with severe alcohol abuse, but thiamine deficiency can be caused by many other medical conditions. Bariatric surgery is listed among the causes of Wernicke's encephalopathy. This review provides a brief overview of the risk factors that cause thiamine deficiency, along with clinical features, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures important for timely recognition,

Obesity has become a new worldwide health problem with significant impact not only on cardiovascular diseases but also on many other related disorders, highlighting infertility. Obesity may adversely affect male reproduction by endocrinologic, thermal, genetic, and sexual mechanisms. There is good evidence that obesity can be associated with reduced sperm concentrations, but studies about sperm motility, morphology, and DNA fragmentation have been less numerous and more conflicting. Although weight loss is the cornerstone of the treatment of obesity-related infertility, with promising results

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral neuropathies sometimes complicate bariatric surgery.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report the detailed clinical, electrophysiological, biological and histological characteristics of five patients who developed peripheral neuropathy after bariatric surgery.
RESULTS: Three patients presented with small fiber neuropathy, one presented with axonal polyneuropathy, and one with demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy. All patients had in common prominent neuropathic pain, massive weight loss, and multiple nutritional deficiencies. The pathophysiology of postbariatric surgery polyn

BACKGROUND: This study characterizes the walking limitations of bariatric surgery candidates by age and body mass index (BMI) and determines factors independently associated with walking capacity. The setting was multi-institutional at research university hospitals in the United States.
METHODS: Participants of the Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery study (n=2458; age 18-78 yr, BMI 33-94 kg/m(2)) attended a preoperative research visit. Their walking capacity was measured by self-report and the 400 m Long Distance Corridor Walk (LDCW).
RESULTS: Almost two thirds (64%) of subjects re

Bariatric surgery procedures, including laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, result in an average weight loss of 50 percent of excess body weight. Remission of diabetes mellitus occurs in approximately 80 percent of patients after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Other obesity-related comorbidities are greatly reduced, and health-related quality of life improves. The Obesity Surgery Mortality Risk Score can help identify patients with increased mortality risk from bariatric surgery. Complications and adverse effects are lowest with la

Bariatric surgery is increasingly used to treat morbidly obese patients. Fertility in women may be enhanced after these procedures, owing to substantial weight loss and possibly a decreased absorption of oral contraceptives. We report a pregnancy that occurred two months after biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch in a 32-year-old woman. She subsequently developed haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets count (HELLP) syndrome and had a weight loss of 43 kg (from the bariatric procedure) until the infant was delivered preterm by caesarean section (due to low activity). OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of nutrient deficiencies in patients who present for bariatric surgery, assess nutritional status after surgery, and compare these with preoperative levels.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted to identify preoperative and 1-year postoperative nutrition deficiencies in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. The screening included serum ferritin, vitamin D, vitamin B(12), homocysteine, folate, red blood cell folate, and hemoglobin. Results were available for 232 patients preoperatively and 149 patients postoperatively.

BACKGROUND: The polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most frequent cause of female infertility with an estimated prevalence of 6-10% in premenopausal women. Due to its long-term metabolic and cardiovascular consequences, it poses a severe health problem. Visceral obesity and subsequent insulin resistance represent the core pathophysiology of PCOS, clearly suggesting that measures to reduce abdominal obesity should be pursued.
METHODS: Between February 1995 and October 2006, 204 patients underwent bariatric surgery in the SRH Hospital of Gera. 75% of the patients were female and three of th

Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for patients with clinically severe obesity. In addition to significant weight loss, it is also associated with improvements in comorbidities. Unfortunately, bariatric surgery also has the potential to cause a variety of nutritional and metabolic complications. These complications are mostly due to the extensive surgically induced anatomical changes incurred by the patient's gastrointestinal tract, particularly with roux-en-Y gastric bypass and biliopancreatic diversion. Complications associated with vertical banded gastroplasty are mostly due to dec

Obesity is shaping up to be the major health care problem and one of the most frequent causes of preventable death in Western countries in the 21st century. Bariatric surgery is the only current treatment that has been shown to achieve major and durable weight loss. Major weight loss in the severely obese leads to total or partial control of a wide range of common and serious diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension. Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding is the most common type of obesity surgery performed in Australia. It is effective, relatively safe and minimally invasiv

BACKGROUND: Obesity is an important risk factor for perioperative complications including the development of ventral hernias.
METHODS: This retrospective study comprises patients who underwent abdominal hernia repair simultaneously with or following implantation of a Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band(R) (SAGB).
RESULTS: 9 out of 415 patients (2.2%) who received a SAGB between January 1996 and June 2001 underwent ventral hernia repair. In 6 patients, hernias preexisted from previous abdominal surgery at the time of the bariatric procedure, and another 3 hernias occurred at the median and left u

BACKGROUND: Revision operations have traditionally been considered difficult and associated with a high complication and long-term failure rate. This paper demonstrates that revision and/or conversions to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass are generally safe as well as effective in long-term weight maintenance and control of co-morbidities.
METHODS: A retrospective study from January 1989 through August 1999 was done involving 141 patients who had had various gastroplasty (118), gastric banding (6), jejunoileal bypass (3), or loop (2) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) procedures (12), with either te

With 1 in 8 people worldwide living with obesity, bariatric procedures continue to increase in popularity with more than a half million surgeries performed yearly. Postbariatric hypoglycemia (PBH) is now recognized as a complication of bariatric and upper gastrointestinal surgeries. While prevalence remains uncertain, symptoms have been reported in up to 30% of postsurgical patients. PBH is characterized by postprandial hypoglycemia causing neuroglycopenic symptoms of confusion, loss of consciousness, and seizures in a smaller subset of patients. Patient symptoms are often falsely attributed t

IntroductionBariatric surgery is increasingly performed in individuals of reproductive age to treat obesity and reduce associated comorbidities. However, the impact of these procedures on subsequent pregnancy outcomes remains incompletely understood. This study evaluates perinatal outcomes in patients with a history of bariatric surgery, focusing exclusively on pregnancies occurring after surgery, using a large, real-world database.MethodsA retrospective cohort study was conducted using the TriNetX Research Network, a national, de-identified electronic health record database. BACKGROUND: Proper ergonomics is crucial for surgeons in the operating room to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries (MSI). Surgery performed on patients with high body mass indexes (BMI) is associated with an increase in non-neutral postures and a higher risk of developing MSIs in laparoscopic models (Sers et al., in Appl Ergon 97:103501). The aim of this study is to establish the prevalence and identify the risk factors of MSIs among bariatric surgeons in Canada.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study is based on a researcher-administered questionnaire conducted using a videoconference p

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review is to present the current state of the field, highlight recent developments, and describe the clinical outcomes of endoscopic therapies for bariatric surgery complications.
RECENT FINDINGS: The field of interventional endoscopy now presents a range of minimally invasive procedures for addressing postbariatric complications. Lumen-opposing metal stents have emerged as a reliable solution for managing gastrojejunal strictures following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, whether with or without associated leaks. Additionally, they serve as a conduit for performin
