Can We Rely on Predicted Basal Metabolic Rate in Patients With Intestinal Failure on Home Parenteral Nutrition?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Intestinal failure (IF) is a serious and common complication of short bowel syndrome with patients depending on parenteral nutrition (PN) support. Effective nutrition management requires an accurate estimation of the patient's basal metabolic rate (BMR) to avoid underfeeding or overfeeding. However, indirect calorimetry, considered the gold standard for BMR assessment, is a time- and resource-consuming procedure. Consequently, several equations for prediction of BMR have been developed in different settings, but their accuracy in patients with IF are yet to be investigated

Reduced basal macrovascular and microvascular cerebral blood flow in young adults with metabolic syndrome: potential mechanisms.

Ninety-million Americans suffer metabolic syndrome (MetSyn), increasing the risk of diabetes and poor brain outcomes, including neuropathology linked to lower cerebral blood flow (CBF), predominantly in anterior regions. We tested the hypothesis that total and regional CBF is lower in MetSyn more so in the anterior brain and explored three potential mechanisms. Thirty-four controls (25 ± 5 yr) and 19 MetSyn (30 ± 9 yr), with no history of cardiovascular disease/medications, underwent four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to quantify macrovascular CBF, whereas arterial spin lab

Compilation of basal metabolic and blood perfusion rates in various multi-compartment, whole-body thermoregulation models.

The assignments of basal metabolic rates (BMR), basal cardiac output (BCO), and basal blood perfusion rates (BBPR) were compared in nine multi-compartment, whole-body thermoregulation models. The data are presented at three levels of detail: total body, specific body regions, and regional body tissue layers. Differences in the assignment of these quantities among the compared models increased with the level of detail, in the above order. The ranges of variability in the total body BMR was 6.5 % relative to the lowest value, with a mean of 84.3 ± 2 W, and in the BCO, it was 8 % with a mean of 4

Uptake and metabolism of female sex steroids by isolated small neurons and other cell fractions from the rat medial basal hypothalamus.

Rat medial basal hypothalami (MBH) and sections of cerebral cortex (CC) were dissociated with trypsin to prepare single cells and subcellular fractions. They were then separated into four fractions on a discontinuous sucrose gradient. The small neurons in Fraction D were highly purified. Fraction A had synaptosomes, myelin and other cell particulates. Fraction B had glial cells, neurons and a few synaptosomes. Fraction C had large neurons and red blood cells. All four fractions contained LHRH, but most (62.5%) of this hormone was present in Fraction A. Dissociated cell suspensions were incubat

Basal Metabolic Rate and 5-Year Risk of Disability in Older Adults: Evidence From a Cohort With Counterfactual Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Basal metabolic rate (BMR) declines with age and reflects reduced physiological reserve. Estimated BMR, derived from anthropometric variables, may reflect vulnerability related to age, sex, and body size rather than directly measured intrinsic metabolic function. This study examined the association between estimated BMR and 5-year incident disability in community-dwelling older adults and evaluated the impact of small changes in BMR on disability risk. DESIGN: Five-year prospective cohort study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: The study included 13,343 community-dwelling adults aged 65

Associations of Dietary Antioxidant and Phytochemical Indices with Cognitive Function: Mediating Roles of Basal Metabolic Rate and Systemic Inflammation.

Dietary antioxidants and phytochemicals are believed to support cognitive health, but evidence on composite dietary indices remains limited. This cross-sectional study of 1845 community-dwelling older adults in China investigated the associations of the composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and dietary phytochemical index (DPI) with cognitive function and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA; Beijing version). MCI was diagnosed through a two-stage procedure: MoCA-based preliminary screening (with education-stratifie

Association of basal metabolic rate with mortality among cancer survivors: a cohort study emphasizing heterogeneity by gender and age.

BACKGROUND: The role of basal metabolic rate (BMR) on long-term survival outcomes in cancer survivors remains inconclusive. This study prospectively investigates the dose-response association between equation‑estimated BMR and mortality using data from a nationally representative cohort. METHODS: Data from the United States (U.S.) National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2001-2018) were analyzed, and BMR was compared between cancer survivors (n = 3,434) and cancer-free adults (n = 42,425). BMR's nonlinear association with all-cause and cause-specific mortality among survivors

Basal Metabolic Requirements, Biomarkers of Cardiometabolic Health, and Anthropometric Measures of Obesity in Women and Men With Restricted Growth Conditions.

Population-specific thresholds have not been defined for the levels of adiposity and systemic biomarkers that predict chronic health risks in people with restricted growth conditions. Here, anthropometric measures of adiposity, basal metabolic requirements, and fasted blood samples were obtained from adults with restricted growth (age 41 ± 14 years, height 1.30 ± 0.10 m, body mass 60.5 ± 18.3 kg, female: male n = 24:13, achondroplasia n = 26; mean ± SD). Basal metabolic rate was 6529 ± 1703 kJ·d-1 and total mass-normalized energy requirements were higher for females versus males. Plasma concen

Bilateral and Symmetrical Lesions in the Basal Ganglia Associated With Metabolic Acidosis in a Patient With a History of Alcohol Addiction: A Case Report.

Metabolic acidosis is defined as a pathologic process that, when unopposed, increases the concentration of hydrogen ions in the body and reduces the concentration of HCO3. Methanol poisoning is an important cause of metabolic acidosis. Methanol and ethylene glycol poisonings cause scores of fatal intoxications annually, and even relatively small ingestions of these alcohols can produce significant toxicity. Neuroimaging findings are very suggestive and help in the diagnosis even before the measurement of serum methanol (when available at the health service). Rapid recognition and early treatme
