Comparison of symptomatic spondylolysis in young soccer and baseball players.

BACKGROUND: Spondylolysis is the main cause of low back pain (LBP) in young athletes. There are few studies analyzing the difference of spondylolysis among young athletes with different sports activities. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical factors and distribution of the lesions of spondylolysis on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans in young soccer and baseball players with symptomatic spondylolysis. METHODS: The medical records of 267 young athletes aged 7 to 18 years old who underwent MRI to evaluate the cause of LBP between 2017 and 2020 were retrospectively reviewed

Noise levels at baseball stadiums and the spectators' attitude to noise.

BACKGROUND: Many public health professionals have expressed concern that regular participation in recreational settings with high noise levels might induce hearing loss. This study measures the noise levels in a baseball stadium and analyzes baseball fans' attitude of effect of recreational noise exposure on their hearing. METHODS: In the baseball stadium, noise levels from the beginning to the end of four games were measured in four seating sections, the red, blue, navy, and outfield sections using a sound level meter. For the survey sample, 344 randomly selected participants who visited the

Lumbar Hyperextension in Baseball Pitching: A Potential Cause of Spondylolysis.

Symptomatic spondylolysis/spondylolisthesis is thought to be caused by repetitive lumbar extension. About 8.9% of baseball pitchers that experience back pain will be diagnosed with spondylolysis. Therefore, this study aims to identify and quantify lumbar extension experienced during baseball pitching. It was hypothesized that young pitchers would exhibit less lumbar extension than older pitchers. A total of 187 healthy pitchers were divided into 3 age groups: youth, adolescent, and college. Kinematic data were collected at 250 Hz using a 3-D motion capture system. Lumbar motion was calculated

Throwing-related injuries of the subscapularis in professional baseball players.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the MR appearance of a series of throwing-related injuries to the subscapularis muscle-tendon complex among baseball players. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of MR scans of the shoulder in players from 1 professional baseball organization over the course of 5 years was performed to identify cases with findings suggestive of subscapularis injury. These findings were graded and the medical record was reviewed to assess clinical findings, treatment, and follow-up. Preinjury baseline measurements of arm external rotation at 90° of abduction were compared to me

The utility of the KJOC score in professional baseball in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic (KJOC) Shoulder and Elbow questionnaire has been shown by previous studies to be more sensitive than other validated subjective measurement tools in the detection of upper extremity dysfunction in overhead-throwing athletes. PURPOSE: The primary objective was to establish normative data for KJOC scores in professional baseball players in the United States. The secondary objectives were to evaluate the effect of player age, playing position, professional competition level, history of injury, history of surgery, and time point of administration on

A biomechanical comparison of the fastball and curveball in adolescent baseball pitchers.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of shoulder and elbow injuries in adolescent baseball players is rapidly increasing. One leading theory about this increase is that breaking pitches (such as the curveball) place increased moments on the dominant arm and thereby increase the risk of injury. HYPOTHESIS: There is no difference in the moments at the shoulder and elbow between fastball and curveball pitches in adolescent baseball pitchers. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Thirty-three adolescent baseball pitchers with a minimum of 2 years of pitching experience underwent 3-dimensiona

Traumatic hyphema in an intercollegiate baseball player: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: To present the case of a collegiate baseball player struck in the right eye. BACKGROUND: While attempting a bunt, a 20-year-old collegiate baseball player was hit in the right eye when the ball was deflected off the bat. The athlete bled from the nose, and the right eye swelled shut from eyelid edema. Initial nasal hemorrhage was controlled, and the athlete was referred to the emergency room for further care due to pain in the inferior orbit. DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS: Eyelid contusion, traumatic iritis, or traumatic microhyphema to the right eye secondary to blunt trauma. TREATMENT

Use of smokeless tobacco in a group of professional baseball players.

This paper describes the smokeless tobacco use practices and oral health problems of members of a minor league professional baseball team. Seventeen of 25 ball-players reported current use of smokeless tobacco. Gingival recession and lesions in the oral mucosa were more common in smokeless tobacco users than nonusers. Reported use of smokeless tobacco was greater during baseball season than in the off-season. Of the 19 current and past users, 15 reported first using smokeless tobacco after entering professional baseball. To discourage the use of smokeless tobacco by professional athletes, team

Chronic Adaptations of the Shoulder in Baseball Pitchers: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Understanding clinical and tissue adaptations to the throwing shoulder is important for optimizing injury prevention and rehabilitation programs in baseball players. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to determine the chronic clinical (range of motion [ROM] and strength) and tissue adaptations of the throwing shoulder in baseball pitchers. It was hypothesized that the throwing shoulder would have increased external rotation (ER) ROM and decreased internal rotation (IR) ROM compared with the nonthrowing shoulder, but that calculations of soft tissue glenohumeral IR d

Physical Therapy Management of a Baseball Player With Hallux Rigidus.

Hallux rigidus is a common condition affecting the foot. I was not able to find evidence regarding the management of patients with hallux rigidus with manual physical therapy consisting of hands-on manual therapy techniques and movement-reinforcing exercise. This case report attempts to highlight the management of a patient with hallux rigidus by a physical therapist. The patient was a 60-year-old male baseball player with clinically apparent pain, loss of metatarsophalangeal joint motion, and radiographically visible degenerative changes suggesting a diagnosis of grade II hallux rigidus. Trea

Evaluation and Preparation of the Baseball Player in the Athletic Training Room.

A critical aspect of the care of the baseball player involves understanding injury patterns, workload tolerance, and objective markers that can aid in identifying predisposing factors to injury. After injury, a well-structured rehabilitation program can return many players to the field. The greatest challenge is not only returning them to the previous level of performance but also preventing reinjury and maintaining durability. Potential factors implicated in the most common injuries include deficits in range of motion, balance, core strength, lumbopelvic control, thoracic rotation, posture, a

The Effects of Fatigue on Muscle Synergies in the Shoulders of Baseball Players.

BACKGROUND: Muscle synergies are defined as the central nervous system's organizational structure for movement. Muscle synergies change after muscular fatigue, with certain synergies assuming the primary role to compensate for fatigue within another muscle synergy. Owing to the high eccentric forces imposed upon the external rotators (ie, posterior rotator cuff), pitchers that continue to throw while fatigued are at a significantly higher risk of shoulder and/or elbow injury; however, the neuromuscular compensation strategies of baseball players in response to fatigue are currently unknown. Editorial Commentary: "There's No Crying in Baseball," But There Is Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Elbow.

Osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum is a rare and ultrasonically identifiable disease of the dominant elbow of preadolescent baseball players as young as 9 years of age. We must choose to protect these young players, either by initiating a screening program to identify the disease at an early stage when treatment results in an acceptable lifelong outcome or by vociferously limiting the daily, weekly, and yearly participation in this vulnerable group.

Dr. Grady diploma orange (1900-1946): Baseball, segregation, and medicine.

Dr. Grady Orange was a baseball player in the Negro National League (NNL) from 1925 to 1930, and then a practicing physician until his sudden death. Born in 1900, in Terrell, Texas, Grady was raised in the Jim Crow South. There were economic and societal barriers for African Americans, including access to well-paying jobs and opportunities for career advancement. Hospitals were segregated, as Black doctors faced barriers to medical education and were often not permitted to practice in white institutions. After Orange's baseball career, using NNL salaries to cover costs, he turned his focus to
