Molecular characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of novel goose parvovirus strains associated with short beak and dwarfism syndrome.

Short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS) emerged in Cherry Valley duck flocks in China in 2015, and novel goose parvovirus (NGPV) was shown to be the etiological agent of SBDS. To date, it is not known whether SBDS-related NGPV isolates possess common molecular characteristics. In this study, three new NGPV strains (namely, SDHT16, SDJN19, and SDLC19) were isolated from diseased ducks showing typical signs of SBDS and successfully passaged in embryonated goose or Cherry Valley duck eggs. The complete genome sequences of these NGPV strains were 98.9%-99.7% identical to each other but showed slig

Open-source real-time passive acoustic tracking of beaked whales for low-power devices.

Real-time tracking of multiple underwater sound sources remains a challenge in passive acoustics, particularly for low-power autonomous systems. Many existing tracking methods rely on post-processing or computationally intensive techniques, limiting their applicability to embedded devices. To overcome these limitations, we present a time-difference-of-arrival-based tracking algorithm that tracks multiple sources in the direction-of-arrival (DOA) domain. A key architectural feature of the method is the decoupling of continuous per-frame DOA estimation from source enumeration, enabling these pro

Audiogram of a stranded Blainville's beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris) measured using auditory evoked potentials.

Quantifying and understanding the impact of anthropogenic sound on marine mammals has been the focus of many researchers both in laboratory settings as well as in the field. This study presents the audiogram of a sub-adult Blainville's beaked whale that stranded in Hawaii. The hearing measurements were conducted using the non-invasive auditory brainstem response technique. A total of 11 sinusoidally amplitude modulated tones were tested ranging from 5.6 to 160 kHz. The audiogram data indicated that the region of best hearing was found between 40 and 50 kHz with thresholds below 50 dB. This fre

Beak wiping stereotypies are correlated with neophobia and lack of enrichment in captive house sparrows (Passer domesticus).

Behavioural syndromes are suites of correlated behaviours at the population or species level that can affect how wild animals respond to their environments, including potentially stressful situations such as captivity. In this study, we assessed whether beak wiping, a stereotyped anxiety-linked behaviour where birds wipe their beaks on a perch in a "windshield wiper" motion, was correlated with another anxiety-linked behaviour, neophobia towards novel objects presented with food, in captive house sparrows (Passer domesticus). We predicted that more neophobic sparrows would also exhibit more be

Comparison of Piezoelectric and High-Speed Drills for Frontal Beak Osteotomy in Endoscopic Sinus Surgery-Exploratory Study.

INTRODUCTION: Frontal beak reduction is a critical and challenging step in endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Traditional high-speed drills can risk thermal injury and soft tissue trauma, whereas piezoelectric surgery uses ultrasonic vibrations for selective bone cutting and may improve surgical precision. This study compared piezoelectric devices with conventional drills for frontal beaks reduction. METHODS: A double-blind exploratory study with randomisation was conducted during the years 2019-2022. Adult CRS patients (n = 43) with prominent nasofrontal beak un

Beyond visualizing the bird beak: esophagram, timed barium esophagram and manometry in achalasia and its 3 subtypes.

Achalasia is a rare esophageal motility disorder characterized by lack of primary peristalsis and a poorly relaxing lower esophageal sphincter. This disease process can be examined several ways and these evaluations can offer complementary information. There are three manometric subtypes of achalasia, with differing appearances on esophagram. Differentiating them is clinically important, because treatment for the subtypes varies. Timed barium esophagram (TBE) is a simple test to quantitatively evaluate esophageal emptying. TBE can be used to diagnose achalasia and assess treatment response. Co

Bone-Healing Capacity of PCL/PLGA/Duck Beak Scaffold in Critical Bone Defects in a Rabbit Model.

Bone defects are repaired using either natural or synthetic bone grafts. Poly(ϵ-caprolactone) (PCL), β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP), and poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) are widely used as synthetic materials for tissue engineering. This study aimed to investigate the bone-healing capacity of PCL/PLGA/duck beak scaffold in critical bone defects and the oxidative stress status of the graft site in a rabbit model. The in vivo performance of 48 healthy New Zealand White rabbits, weighing between 2.5 and 3.5 kg, was evaluated. The rabbits were assigned to the following groups: group 1 (control),

Plasma cofactors necessary for Enhydrina schistosa (beaked sea snake) venom to induce platelet aggregation.

A study of the effect of the venom of the beaked sea snake (Enhydrina schistosa) was undertaken on platelet aggregation. It was found that platelet aggregation and the release reaction occurred in the presence of both venom and plasma but, not with the venom alone. No effect was observed with fixed platelets distinguishing the effect of the venom from that of platelet aggregation with ristocetin or botrocetin and indicating metabolic dependence. Studies to elucidate the plasma factor required for platelet aggregation under the release reaction indicated dependence on the presence of both Facto

Immunogenicity of an inactivated novel goose parvovirus vaccine for short beak and dwarfism syndrome in Cherry Valley ducks.

Duck short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS) is a viral infectious disease caused by novel goose parvovirus (NGPV), which has been responsible for serious economic losses to the Chinese duck industry in recent years. Currently, there is no effective vaccine against this disease. In this study, we developed an inactivated virus vaccine candidate for SBDS based on NGPV strain DS15 isolated from a duck in China. Immune efficacy was evaluated in 112 ducks, which were randomly divided into vaccination, challenge-control, vaccination-challenge, and blank control groups (28 per group). Clinical chara

Duck "beak atrophy and dwarfism syndrome" disease complex: Interplay of novel goose parvovirus-related virus and duck circovirus?

As a newly emerged infectious disease, duck "beak atrophy and dwarfism syndrome (BADS)" disease has caused huge economic losses to waterfowl industry in China since 2015. Novel goose parvovirus-related virus (NGPV) is believed the main pathogen of BADS disease; however, BADS is rarely reproduced by infecting ducks with NGPV alone. As avian circovirus infection causes clinical symptoms similar to BADS, duck circovirus (DuCV) is suspected the minor pathogen of BADS disease. In this study, an investigation was carried out to determine the coinfection of NGPV and DuCV in duck embryos and in ducks

Type 1a endoleak following Zone 1 and Zone 2 thoracic endovascular aortic repair: effect of bird-beak configuration.

OBJECTIVES: Type 1a endoleak is one of the most severe complications after thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR), because it carries the risk of aortic rupture. The association between bird-beak configuration and Type 1a endoleak remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to analyse the predictors of Type 1a endoleak following Zone 1 and Zone 2 TEVAR, with a particular focus on the effect of bird-beak configuration. METHODS: From April 2008 to July 2015, 105 patients (mean age 68.6 years) who underwent Zone 1 and 2 landing TEVAR were enrolled, with a mean follow-up period of 4.3 yea

Phylogeny of beak and feather disease virus in cockatoos demonstrates host generalism and multiple-variant infections within Psittaciformes.

Phylogenetic analyses of the highly genetically diverse but antigenically conserved, single-stranded circular, DNA genome of the avian circovirus, beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) from cockatoo species throughout Australia demonstrated a high mutation rate for BFDV (orders of magnitude fall in the range of 10(-4) substitutions/site/year) along with strong support for recombination indicating active cross-species transmission in various subpopulations. Multiple variants of BFDV were demonstrated with at least 30 genotypic variants identified within nine individual birds, with one containin

A remarkable beak morphology in a bird skull from the Eocene of Messel (Germany) signifies unusual feeding specializations.

We report the skull of a new avian species from the latest early or earliest middle Eocene fossil site Messel in Germany. Aenigmatorhynchus rarus, gen. et sp. nov. is characterized by a long, straight, and pointed beak, as well as a mandible with prominent processus coronoidei, a very long symphysis, closely adjacent cristae tomiales, and a narrow dorsal sulcus along the tip. This unusual character mosaic impedes a straightforward phylogenetic assignment. In its proportions, the mandible is superficially similar to that of extant stilts (Himantopus, Recurvirostridae) and oystercatchers (Haemat

Adult duck fecal microbiota transplantation alleviates short beak and dwarfism syndrome in ducklings by inhibiting Th17 cell differentiation.

Novel goose parvovirus (NGPV) infection in ducklings induces short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS), leading to significant economic losses. Since NGPV predominantly infects ducklings, whether reshaping the intestinal flora of ducklings through fecal microbiota transplantation from adult ducks (FMT-A) can alleviate SBDS is an interesting question. This study aimed to investigate the impact of FMT-A on the susceptibility of ducklings to NGPV infection, to elucidate the potential relationship between gut microbiota and viral pathogenicity. The results showed that ducklings were more susceptible

Analysis of Extreme Beak Calcaneal Fracture (Type 2-Lee) Fixed with Cannulated Cancellous Screws: An Original Research Article.

INTRODUCTION: Extreme beak calcaneal fractures (Type 2 Lee's tuberosity avulsion fractures) are rare injuries, accounting for only 1.3-3% of all calcaneal fractures. These injuries are considered as surgical emergency as they can lead to significant functional impairment and soft-tissue compromise if not promptly managed. This study evaluates the efficacy of cannulated cancellous (CC) screw fixation for these fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study of 14 patients with extreme beak calcaneal fracture (Type 2 Lee's - tuberosity avulsion fractures) treated with CC screw fixation wa
