Which factors influence the virulence of entomopathogenic fungi? Effect of spore type, oosporein, application method, and pathway of entry on the infectiveness of Beauveria brongniartii against Melolontha melolontha.

AIMS: The control of the common cockchafer Melolontha melolontha using the entomopathogenic fungus (EPF) Beauveria brongniartii is one of the most successful biological control systems. This study aimed to identify factors influencing the outcome of laboratory bioassays, which are crucial early steps in the development of biocontrol products, by using this system as a role model. METHODS AND RESULTS: We combined spray and injection applications of conidio- and blastospores of the host-specific pathogen B. brongniartii BIPESCO2 (Bip2) and the generalist EPF Metarhizium brunneum Ma 43 and appli

In-planta detection and monitorization of endophytic colonization by a Beauveria bassiana strain using a new-developed nested and quantitative PCR-based assay and confocal laser scanning microscopy.

Beauveria bassiana strain 04/01-Tip obtained from larvae of the opium poppy stem gall Iraella luteipes endophytically colonizes opium poppy plants and protect it against this pest. Development of a specific, rapid and sensitive technique that allows accurately determining the process and factors leading to the establishment of this strain in opium poppy plants would be essential to achieve its efficient control in a large field scale. For that purpose in the present study, species-specific primers that can be used in conventional or quantitative PCR protocols were developed for specifically id

Effects of temperature and relative humidity on germination, vegetative growth, sporulation, and pathogenicity of native Beauveria bassiana isolates and formulations against adult desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria Forskål).

Entomopathogenic fungi such as Beauveria bassiana are promising biocontrol agents against the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, but their performance is strongly influenced by temperature and relative humidity (RH). In this study, native B. bassiana isolates recovered from soils in Isiolo and Laikipia Counties, Kenya, were molecularly identified and evaluated under factorial combinations of temperature (20, 25, 30, and 35 °C) and RH (50, 75, and 90%) to determine their effects on conidial germination, vegetative growth, sporulation, and pathogenicity against adult S. gregaria. Three native

A review of described cases of mycotic keratitis and sclerokeratitis related to entomopathogenic fungi from 1984 to 2021.

Infectious keratitis and sclerokeratitis caused by filamentous fungi prevail in agricultural regions with tropical and subtropical climates and are related mostly to mild abrasive corneal trauma especially after vegetable matter related injury. Biotechnological advances have introduced biological control agents in agriculture such as fungal-based biocontrol agents that use Beauveria and Metarhizium species as bioinsecticides. Keratitis and sclerokeratitis are the most frequent pathologies associated to Beauveria and Metarhizium infection that are the main entomopathogenic fungi used in biologi

Diversity and genetic population structure of fungal pathogens infecting white grub larvae in agricultural soils.

White grub larvae are important soil-dwelling pests in many regions of Mexico as they attack many important crops such as maize. The use of synthetic chemicals is currently the main control strategy, but they are not always effective; thus, other alternatives are needed. Microbial control using entomopathogenic fungi represents an important alternative strategy, and species within the genera Beauveria and Metarhizium are considered amongst the most promising candidates. Seventeen Beauveria spp. and two Metarhizium spp. isolates were obtained in surveys of white grub larvae from different regio

Genetic polymorphism and plant growth promotion traits of potent fungal entomopathogens of rice leaf folder.

Entomopathogenic fungal biocides are preferred for environment friendly sustainable management of insect pests due to their host specificity and harmlessness to non-target insects. Plant growth promotion (PGP) functions of the entomofungi are also important attributes but hitherto insignificantly explored. Therefore, virulence of 17 natural fungal entomocides (Cordyceps, Beauveria, Metarhizium, Nomuraea, Fusarium, Verticillium, Trichoderma and Paecilomyces spp.) were evaluated for pathogenicity against five rice pests (brown plant hopper (Nilaparvata lugens) and green leaf hopper (Nephotettix

First evidence of the activity of an entomopathogenic fungus against the eggs of Sarcoptes scabiei.

The entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana has been successfully used for the control of phytopathogenic arthropods and there are a growing number of studies suggesting that this kind of fungus could also be used for the control of ectoparasites in mammals. This study evaluated for the first time the efficacy of different Beauveria strains against the eggs of Sarcoptes scabiei collected from experimentally infected pigs. Eggs were exposed to fungal conidia and monitored for hatching over 10 days. The strongest effect (28.75 % of hatching inhibition) was obtained with a commercial B. bassia

Spinosad and Mixtures of an Entomopathogenic Fungus and Pyrethrins for Control of Sitona lineatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in Field Peas.

The pea leaf weevil, Sitona lineatus L., is an important pest of field peas and faba beans in most temperate regions. As no information is currently available on efficacy of biopesticides for S. lineatus control, laboratory bioassays were performed to evaluate the impact of biopesticides (spinosad, Beauveria bassiana strain GHA, pyrethrins, B. bassiana GHA + pyrethrins, and B. bassiana GHA + azadirachtin) against adults of this pest. The concentrations used in this bioassay were 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 times the lowest labeled application rate of each product. Results were further verified in c

Auto-dissemination of commercially available fungal pathogens in a laboratory assay for management of the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus is a canine tick that infests dogs throughout the world and is frequently found in homes and dog kennels. Management of this tick species is complicated by the presence of resistance to commonly utilized acaricides. Fungal formulations could provide a valuable alternative tool for management and are especially relevant indoors where detrimental environmental effects on fungal spores are of less concern. Two commercially available fungal formulations, one containing Metarhizium anisopliae and the other containing Beauveria bassiana, were compared for time to death and s

Biocontrol potential of native entomopathogenic fungi against Phyllotreta spp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) on radish: a study of damage suppression and population dynamics.

Flea beetles (Phyllotreta spp.) have recently emerged as important pests of cruciferous crops in India. However, their incidence and management in Tamil Nadu, India remain poorly documented. This study was undertaken to assess the damage potential and explore sustainable management options in radish (Raphanus sativus), a highly susceptible, short-duration crop that experiences both foliar and root damage, often leading to increased pesticide use and residue concerns. Field surveys conducted across major radish-growing regions of Tamil Nadu revealed the occurrence of Phyllotreta striolata and P

Flavonoid production via solid-state fermentation of agro-industrial waste with biopesticidal fungi: screening, optimization and scale-up.

Flavonoids are bioactive compounds with significant applications in agriculture due to their antimicrobial properties, ability to mitigate abiotic stress and role in promoting plant-microbe interactions. This study explores the potential of producing flavonoids through solid-state fermentation (SSF) using agro-industrial residues as substrates for filamentous fungi. Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride and Beauveria bassiana were evaluated for their ability to increase total flavonoids content on different substrates, in a screening process at laboratory scale, achieving a production of 0

Selective protein self-deprivation by Mormon crickets following fungal attack.

Immune responses to infection result in behavioral changes that affect resource acquisition, such as general starvation and compensatory feeding to offset changes in resource allocation. Mormon crickets aggregate and march in bands containing millions of insects. Some bands are comprised of insects seeking proteins. They are also low in circulating phenoloxidase (PO) and more susceptible to fungal attack, as we have demonstrated in the lab. Here, we ask: Do Mormon crickets elevate PO and consume protein in response to infection by the pathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana? B. bassiana was appli

Infections by entomopathogenic fungi in common green iguanas (Iguana iguana) in captivity in Brazil.

Entomopathogenic fungi, widely available biological agents used to control agricultural pests, are sporadically reported to cause focal or disseminated infection in reptiles and mammals, including humans. This study summarizes the clinical presentation, histopathological and molecular findings by panfungal polymerase chain reaction and sequencing of four cases of hypocrealean fungal infections in captive common green iguanas (Iguana, iguana). One case of granulomatous pneumonia, hepatitis and serositis was related to Metarhizium flavoviride complex infection. Two disseminated fungal infection

Two C6 transcription factors act as host immune terminator (HitA) and regulator of insect pathogenicity (Rip4) in Beuaveria bassiana.

Fungal C6 transcription factors (TFs) are generally underexplored. Here, we report the first host immune terminator (HitA) and the fourth regulator of insect pathogenicity (Rip4) identified from the C6 TFs of Beauveria bassiana, a wide-spectrum mycoinsecticide. The deletion mutant of hitA lost all insecticidal activity via normal cuticle or cuticle-bypassing (injection) infection but reserved a capability of hyphal penetration through host cuticle. Its conidia injected into host hemocoel were internalized by cellular encapsulation within 8 h, followed by aggregation of small melanotic capsules

Simultaneous exposure of nematophagous fungi, entomopathogenic nematodes and entomopathogenic fungi can modulate belowground insect pest control.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) and fungi (EPF) are well known biological control agents (BCAs) against insect pests. Similarly, the nematophagous fungi (NF) are considered good BCA candidates for controlling plant parasitic nematodes. Because NF can employ EPNs as food and interact with EPF, we speculate that the simultaneous application of EPNs and EPF might result in higher insect mortality, whereas the triple species combination with NF will reduce the EPN and EPF activity by predation or inhibition. Here we evaluated single, dual (EPN + EPF, EPF + NF, EPN + NF) and triple (EPN + EPF + N

Carnauba wax enhances the insecticidal activity of entomopathogenic fungi against the blowfly Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Blowfly, Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is a problematic synanthropic insect pest, a vector of microbial pathogens, and the causal agent of secondary myiasis. Fungal biopesticides are considered eco-friendly tools, alternative to synthetic pesticides, for the control of arthropod pests; however, to date, little is known about their bioactivity against blowflies. In this study, we assessed the insecticidal activity of three well-known entomopathogenic fungi, Beauveria bassiana, Beauveria pseudobassiana and Akanthomyces muscarius against L. sericata. In addition, we tested powdered c

Novel transinfections of Rickettsiella across multiple clonal genotypes are compatible with chemical and entomopathogen control of Myzus persicae.

Symbiotic bacteria are of increasing interest as new, alternative biological control candidates for managing insect pests. Previous work has found that a novel, self-spreading, transinfection of the endosymbiont, Rickettsiella viridis, can induce fitness costs in the globally invasive aphid pest, Myzus persicae (Sulzer). Endosymbiont transinfections could be used in broad scale management if they do not interfere with other common control options that are compatible with integrated pest management at local scales. In this work, we studied the effect of a novel Rickettsiella transinfection on c

Ethanol tolerance of fungal strains underlies biocontrol of invasive ambrosia beetles.

Entomopathogenic fungi are widely recognized as biological control agents showing potential against insect pests that are difficult to manage with chemical pesticides. Invasive ambrosia beetles threaten a wide variety of tree crops and prove challenging to manage with chemical pesticides due to their unique life history: entrenched in the xylem of tree hosts, feeding on symbiotic fungi. Many ambrosia beetle species attack trees that are flood-stressed and producing ethanol, a key component of growth for their fungal symbiont. Ethanol causes osmotic and chaotropic stress in microbes and could p
