Behavioral assessment of the type A behavior pattern.

The present study attempted to assess systematically a set of behavioral subcomponents associated with the Type A behavior pattern. Sixty middle-aged men underwent the structured interview (SI) and a repeated version of the SI after a four-month interval. A high degree of interrater reliability was established for a number of behavioral components including speed and volume of speech, motoric activity, expiratory sighs, response latency, interruptions, unevenness of speech, plosive words, and potential for hostility. In general, these behaviors were stable over the four-month interval, althoug

Postpartum scarcity-adversity disrupts maternal behavior without altering anxiety-like behavior or cognition.

Exposure to postpartum resource scarcity disrupts maternal caregiving and shapes long-term offspring outcomes. However, it remains unclear whether adversity-induced alterations in maternal behavior reflect generalized changes in anxiety-like behavior or cognition. Here, we assessed maternal behavior, anxiety-like behavior, and cognitive performance in postpartum rats exposed to a scarcity-adversity paradigm from postpartum days (PD) 2-9. Consistent with prior reports, scarcity-adversity dams displayed increased insensitive pup-directed behaviors such as stepping, dragging, and shoving pups. De

A novel paradigm for investigating compulsive-like behavior in rats: excessive precautionary behavior.

BACKGROUND: Compulsions, conceptualized as time-consuming and exaggerated behaviors aimed at preventing anticipated adverse outcomes, have not been adequately considered within existing animal models. This study aims to address this gap. METHODS: Twenty Wistar albino rats entered the training phase; 12 animals (6 female and 6 male) met the predefined task-acquisition criteria and were included in the final analysis. In the experiment phase no unpleasant stimulus was given. The number and duration of lever presses and sucrose bottle contacts, the number of grooming, defecations, and zone chang

The cyclic interaction between daytime behavior and the sleep behavior of laboratory dogs.

Sleep deprivation has been found to negatively affect an individual´s physical and psychological health. Sleep loss affects activity patterns, increases anxiety-like behaviors, decreases cognitive performance and is associated with depressive states. The activity/rest cycle of dogs has been investigated before, but little is known about the effects of sleep loss on the behavior of the species. Dogs are polyphasic sleepers, meaning the behavior is most observed at night, but bouts are also present during the day. However, sleep can vary with ecological and biological factors, such as age, sex,

Internet gambling, substance use, and delinquent behavior: an adolescent deviant behavior involvement pattern.

Internet gambling among adolescents is a growing phenomenon that has received little attention to date. This study examines associations between Internet gambling and the severity of gambling, substance use (SU), and delinquent behavior among 1,870 Quebec students aged 14 to 18. The results show a higher proportion of Internet-gambling (IG) students reporting problematic substance use and delinquency, compared with nongamblers (NG) and non-Internet gamblers (NIG). Furthermore, a higher proportion of at-risk and probable pathological gamblers are found among IG compared with NIG. A moderating e

Functions of maladaptive behavior in intellectual and developmental disabilities: behavior categories and topographies.

Research has shown that different maladaptive behavior categories may be maintained by different contingencies. We examined whether behavior categories or behavior topographies determine functional properties. The Questions about Behavioral Function with its five subscales (Attention, Escape, Nonsocial, Physical, and Tangible) was completed by direct care staff for one target behavior for each of 115 adults with varying degrees of intellectual disabilities. In the first step we examined the functional properties of three broad behavior categories (self-injurious behavior [SIB], stereotypic beh

Prenatal lipopolysaccharide exposure affects maternal behavior and male offspring sexual behavior in adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the effects of prenatal lipopolysaccharide (LPS) exposure on the maternal behavior of pregnant rats and the physical development and sexual behavior of their male offspring in adulthood. METHODS: For two experiments, pregnant rats were injected with LPS (250 microg/kg, i.p.) on gestation day (GD) 21. In the first experiment, the maternal behavior (postnatal day, PND, 6) and the dam's open-field general activity (PND7) were evaluated. In the second experiment, the maternal pre- and postnatal parameters, the pup's development, the offspring's sexual behavior i

Family history of suicidal behavior predicts impulsive-aggressive behavior levels in psychiatric outpatients.

OBJECTIVES: Impulsive-aggressive traits have been proposed as mediators of the transmission of suicidal behavior in families. Our aim was to investigate the association between family history of suicidal behavior, and expressions of impulsivity and aggressive behavior, in a clinical population. METHODS: A sample of n=474 psychiatric outpatient subjects were assessed by means of standardized interviews for Axis I and II psychopathology, history of suicidal behavior in subjects and their family, and measures of impulsive-aggressive behaviors (IAB). RESULTS: A total of n=38 (8%) probands had a

Drug-behavior interaction history: modification of the effects of morphine on punished behavior.

Squirrel monkeys were trained to respond under a multiple fixed-interval, fixed-interval schedule in which the first response after 5 min terminated a visual stimulus in the presence of which electric shocks could occur. During one component of the schedule, correlated with one color of stimulus lights, every 30th response also produced electric shock; responding was suppressed during this component to approximately 10 to 12% of that occurring in the alternate component in which responding was not punished. In contrast to previous research, morphine (0.03 to 1.0 mg/kg) increased punished respo

Neural Synchrony and Consumer Behavior: Predicting Friends' Behavior in Real-World Social Networks.

The endogenous aspect of social influence, reflected in the spontaneous alignment of behaviors within close social relationships, plays a crucial role in understanding human social behavior. In two studies involving 222 human subjects (Study 1: n = 175, 106 females; Study 2: n = 47, 33 females), we used a longitudinal behavioral study and a naturalistic stimuli neuroimaging study to investigate the endogenous consumer behavior similarities and their neural basis in real-world social networks. The findings reveal that friends, compared with nonfriends, exhibit higher similarity in product evalu

Gambling and the Reasoned Action Model: Predicting Past Behavior, Intentions, and Future Behavior.

Gambling is a serious concern for society because it is highly addictive and is associated with a myriad of negative outcomes. The current study applied the Reasoned Action Model (RAM) to understand and predict gambling intentions and behavior. Although prior studies have taken a reasoned action approach to understand gambling, no prior study has fully applied the RAM or used the RAM to predict future gambling. Across two studies the RAM was used to predict intentions to gamble, past gambling behavior, and future gambling behavior. In study 1 the model significantly predicted intentions and pa

Motivational Profiles of Gambling Behavior: Self-determination Theory, Gambling Motives, and Gambling Behavior.

Gambling among young adults occurs at a higher rate than in the general population and is associated with a host of negative consequences. Self-determination theory (SDT) posits that individuals develop general motivational orientations which predict a range of behavioral outcomes. An autonomy orientation portrays a choiceful perspective facilitating personal growth, whereas a controlled orientation represents a chronic proclivity toward external pressures and a general lack of choice. Further, an impersonal orientation is characterized by alack of intention and feeling despondent and ineffect

Exploring hypersexual behavior in men with Parkinson's disease: is it compulsive sexual behavior?

BACKGROUND: A range of impulse control disorders has been described in Parkinson's disease, including compulsive sexual behavior. Excessive sexual demands of parkinsonian men can lead to considerable tension within the couple. Thorough sexual interviews reveal that these cases may reflect various types of sexual dysfunctions that present as hypersexuality. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze cases of presumed and true compulsive male sexual behavior, and to propose a practical tool for clinicians, assisting them with the diagnosis and management of compulsive sexual behavior and other sexua

The Aberrant Behavior Checklist and the Behavior Problems Inventory: convergent and divergent validity.

This study was designed to compare and cross-validate two rating instruments [the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) and the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI)] for assessing maladaptive behavior. The BPI assesses three types of behavior problems: Self-Injurious Behavior (SIB), Stereotyped Behavior and Aggressive/Destructive Behavior. The ABC assesses five domains including these three. We collected data on 226 adults, mostly with severe or profound mental retardation, from a medium-sized developmental center. Individuals with elevated BPI scores generally had higher ABC scores; however, the ext

Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance: National College Health Risk Behavior Survey--United States, 1995.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Colleges and universities are important settings for delivering health promotion education and services to many young adults. However, before this national college-based survey was conducted in 1995, the prevalences of health-risk behaviors among college students nationwide had not been well characterized. REPORTING PERIOD: January through June 1995. DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM: The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors six categories of priority health-risk behaviors among youth and young adults: behaviors that contribute to unintentional and intentional

Behavioral Interventions to Increase Physical Activity Among Dementia Caregivers: A Narrative Review of Behavior Theory, Behavior Change Techniques, and Mechanisms of Behavior Change.

Background: Due to the rise in Alzheimer disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (AD/ADRD) in an aging population, millions of caregivers will be at risk for physical and mental health decline. As those they care for already have physical and cognitive impairment, it is crucial that caregivers maintain health-promoting behaviors. Because regular physical activity (PA) prevents functional loss and improves physical health and well-being, understanding how to help caregivers adopt and sustain PA despite unique time, caregiving, and self-efficacy barriers is a pressing public-health priority.
