Veterans regaining control; preliminary effects of inpatient Dialectical Behavior Therapy based PTSD treatment.

Introduction: Trauma-focused therapy (TFT) is highly effective in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, there is some evidence that TFT is less effective in specific groups, such as veterans and people with comorbid personality disorders, emotion regulation problems or substance use disorders.Aim: In this pre-post pilot study, we investigated feasibility and effectiveness of a 12-week veteran intensive treatment consisting of integrated Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and TFT, in Dutch veterans with PTSD, comorbid emotion regulation and/or substance use problems. Results: Self-repor

Post-stroke urinary incontinence is associated with behavior control deficits and overactive bladder.

BACKGROUND: Although urinary incontinence in stroke survivors can substantially impact the patient's quality of life, the underlying neuropsychological mechanisms and its neural basis have not been adequately investigated. Therefore, we investigated this topic via neuropsychological assessment and neuroimaging in a cross-sectional study. METHODS: We recruited 71 individuals with cerebrovascular disease. The relationship between urinary incontinence and neuropsychological indices was investigated using simple linear regression analysis or Mann-Whitney U test, along with other explanatory varia

The risk factors for probable REM sleep behavior disorder: A case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk factors for REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in a case-control study. METHODS: Participants with probable RBD (pRBD) were defined using the RBD Questionnaire-Hong Kong (RBDQ-HK). Controls were collected by matching age and sex. Demographic information, lifestyle, comorbidity, prodromal symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), and blood biomarkers were assessed. The associations between these factors and pRBD were investigated by logistic regression. Partial correlation analysis was used to assess the association between the severity of RBD and depression. Urinary incontinence in female athletes with inadequate eating behavior: a case-control study.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Female athletes can develop symptoms of urinary incontinence (UI) as well as risk behaviors for eating disorders owing to the type of training and sports modality. Such symptoms are intensified by the demands for results and an idealized body composition. Our aim is to investigate the possible association between urinary incontinence and risk behaviors for eating disorders in female athletes. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted with 270 female athletes who answered the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire (ICIQ-SF) and the Eating Attitu

Hypothalamic Dopamine Neurons Control Sensorimotor Behavior by Modulating Brainstem Premotor Nuclei in Zebrafish.

Dopamine (DA)-producing neurons are critically involved in the production of motor behaviors in multiple circuits that are conserved from basal vertebrates to mammals. Although there is increasing evidence that DA neurons in the hypothalamus play a locomotor role, their precise contributions to behavior and the circuit mechanisms by which they are achieved remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that tyrosine-hydroxylase-2-expressing (th2+) DA neurons in the zebrafish hypothalamus fire phasic bursts of activity to acutely promote swimming and modulate audiomotor behaviors on fast timescales. Control of Feeding Behavior by Cerebral Ventricular Volume Transmission of Melanin-Concentrating Hormone.

Classical mechanisms through which brain-derived molecules influence behavior include neuronal synaptic communication and neuroendocrine signaling. Here we provide evidence for an alternative neural communication mechanism that is relevant for food intake control involving cerebroventricular volume transmission of the neuropeptide melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH). Results reveal that the cerebral ventricles receive input from approximately one-third of MCH-producing neurons. Moreover, MCH cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels increase prior to nocturnal feeding and following chemogenetic activat

Individualism-Collectivism, Social Self-Control and Adolescent Substance Use and Risky Sexual Behavior.

Individualism and collectivism are cultural syndromes that have been associated with adolescent problem behavior in studies conducted in the U.S. and Southeast Asia. However, research investigating the mechanisms of how cultural orientation impacts health risk behaviors has been limited. This study tested a new model explaining the relationship between cultural orientation (i.e., individualism, collectivism) and adolescent problem behavior (i.e., substance use and risky sex) in terms of interpersonal self-regulation (i.e., social self-control). As such, the study is rooted in theories of the r

A Neural Basis for Control of Cichlid Female Reproductive Behavior by Prostaglandin F2α.

In most species, females time reproduction to coincide with fertility. Thus, identifying factors that signal fertility to the brain can provide access to neural circuits that control sexual behaviors. In vertebrates, levels of key signaling molecules rise at the time of fertility to prime the brain for reproductive behavior [1-11], but how and where they regulate neural circuits is not known [12, 13]. Specifically, 17α,20β-dihydroxyprogesterone (DHP) and prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) levels rise in teleost fish around the time of ovulation [10, 14, 15]. In an African cichlid fish, Astatotilapia bu

Impulse control disorder and rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between ICD and RBD is still not yet understood and the results from the current literature are contradictory in PD. We aimed to explore the association between rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and impulse control disorder in Parkinson's disease. METHODS: Ninety-eight non-demented patients with Parkinson's disease underwent one night of video-polysomnography recording. The diagnosis of RBD was established according to clinical and polysomnographic criteria. Impulse control disorders were determined by a gold standard, semi-structured diagno

Role of acetylcholine in control of sexual behavior of male and female mammals.

The results of studies using systemic or central applications of cholinergic drugs suggest that acetylcholine makes important contributions to the neurochemical control of male- and female-typical reproductive behaviors. In males, cholinergic control seems largely specific to some elements or aspects of copulatory behavior that can vary significantly across species. Synapses in or near the medial preoptic area represent part of this mechanism, but the entire system appears to extend more widely, perhaps especially to one or more structures flanking some part of the lateral ventricle. In female

Cholinergic control of male mating behavior in hamsters: effects of central oxotremorine treatment.

The responses of rats to intracranial injections of cholinergic drugs implicate acetylcholine in the control of male mating behavior and suggest specific brain areas as mediators of these effects. In particular, past work has linked the medial preoptic area (MPOA) to the control of intromission frequency but implicated areas near the lateral ventricles in effects on the initiation and spacing of intromissions. Studies of responses to systemic cholinergic treatments suggest that acetylcholine is even more important for the control of mating behavior in male hamsters but provide no information o

Lutzomyia longipalpis behavior and control at an urban visceral leishmaniasis focus in Argentina.

During the earlier stages of visceral leishmaniasis transmission in Posadas City, Misiones, both the night activity and attraction to humans of Lutzomyia longipalpis were assessed, in order to provide preliminary recommendations. The impact of peridomestic deltamethrin spraying performed by local officials was also evaluated. Although Lu. longipalpis were found in traps located over a dog the entire night, 90% of the females were captured from 20.30h to 1.30h, and only landed on a human when he was at a distance of 1.5 m from the dog. Peridomestic spraying of deltamethrin (25 mg/m²) reduced th

A rapid neuromodulatory role for steroid hormones in the control of reproductive behavior.

The long-term transcriptional actions of steroids that shape neuronal morphology and the probability of behavioral expression are well established. More recently, attention has been focused on the role of rapid (minute-by-minute) steroid actions on neuronal mechanisms of reproductive behavior. In this review, we first consider the rapid actions of steroids on mating and copulatory behaviors in tetrapod vertebrates. Evidence for rapid effects of steroids is presented for chemoinvestigatory behavior (genital sniffing of females by male mice), lordosis (arched-back mating posture in female rats),

Facilitating postural control: effects on the reaching behavior of 6-month-old infants.

In this study, 3-D kinematic as well as 2-D videorecordings were made of the reaching behavior of infants aged about 6 months who were not yet able to sit. Detailed analyses of these recordings were directed toward specifying the effects of providing additional postural support to the lower body on the spatial and temporal features of such behavior. To detect these effects, reaching and associated head movements in this modified condition were compared to those made while the infants sat in an age-appropriate and commercially available chair lacking the supplementation of support for the pelvi

The modification of breathing behavior. Pavlovian and operant control in emotion and cognition.

The purpose of this article is to bring attention to breathing as a behavior that can be modified by means of Pavlovian and operant principles of control. With this aim in mind, this paper (a) reviews a selection of early and recent conditioning studies (Pavlovian and operant paradigms) in respiratory psychophysiology, (b) discusses the bidirectional relationship between breathing and emotion/cognition, and (c) discusses theoretical and applied implications that point to new directions for research in the laboratory and clinic. Emphasis is placed on dyspnea/suffocation fear and the acquisition

Comorbidity of diabetes and eating disorders. Does diabetes control reflect disturbed eating behavior?

OBJECTIVE: This multicenter study was designed to explore the prevalence of clinical and subclinical eating disorders (EDs), the extent of intentional omission of insulin and oral antidiabetic agents, and its relationship to glycemic control in an inpatient and outpatient population of men and women with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data have been collected from 12 diabetes medical centers in two German cities. In a questionnaire and interview-based study, a sample of male and female patients (n = 341 type 1, n = 322 type 2) was assessed for the following eating di

[Hormonal control of sexual behavior in males and endocrinologic causes of sexual dysfunction].

The role of androgens in the male sex differentiation, in the genesis and preservation of the erectile function is summarized. In sex differentiation, testosterone acts on genitalia and central nervous system (CNS). In CNS sexual steroids exert a morphogenetic action during neuronal development. At the pubertal age, the increase of testosterone leads to the development of sex characteristics, the onset of libido and the beginning of the nocturnal spontaneous erectile function. Spontaneous erections are androgen-dependent, and they are impaired in androgen deficiency. Normal androgen levels lea

Stromelysin-3 in stromal tissue as a control factor in breast cancer behavior.

BACKGROUND: It has long been proposed that secreted proteinases, including the matrix metalloproteinases, play an important part in tumor progression in mediating extracellular matrix remodeling. More recently, it has been suggested that extracellular proteinases also regulate growth factors and cytokines that may contribute to tumor progression. METHODS: RNA in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry were used to study the expression, in breast and other types of human carcinomas, of the stromelysin-3 (ST3) gene, which encodes a putative new member of the matrix metalloproteinase family.
