Mother-Child Relationship Quality in the Presence of Maternal Mental Disorders: Do Self-Report and Behavioural Observation Differ?

Mental disorders affect not only mothers themselves but also their children and partners. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) in particular is thought to impact the mother-child relationship, but comparisons with mothers with other mental disorders are scarce. Many studies use questionnaires without examining if self-report corresponds to observable behaviour. We assessed the perceived mother-child relationship using the Parenting Relationship Questionnaire and the Child Relationship Behaviour Inventory in three groups: (1) mothers with BPD, (2) mothers with anxiety and/or depression and (3)

Opioid Use after Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion: A Comparison between Open and Minimally Invasive Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Opioids are medications frequently used in patients with moderate and severe chronic pain. Their pharmacologic profile allows their use in acute severe postoperative pain. However, due to their highly addictive profile, opioid misuse is considered a public health issue. Vertebral spine fusion, decompression, and instrumentation are often associated with acute, severe postoperative pain. The present study aims to compare postoperative opioid consumption in a group of patients who underwent open transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (OTLIF) against a similar group of patients who un

Investigation of injected laser polarization effects in quantum beat spectroscopy for magnetic field measurements in plasmas.

Magnetic fields exert a strong influence on plasma behavior, highlighting the need for diagnostic techniques that can measure magnetic fields with high accuracy while minimizing plasma perturbation. Quantum Beat Spectroscopy (QBS), recently demonstrated by Gilbert et al. [Plasma Sources Sci. Technol. 34 025020 (2025)] in a laboratory plasma, is a laser-based optical diagnostic that provides Doppler-free measurements of magnetic field strength. In this study, a femtosecond laser is employed in an argon plasma to investigate the dependence of the QBS signal on the polarization of the incident la

Segmental femoral fracture malunion: evidence and prognostic analysis of medical intervention in the third century BC.

We examined the remains of an individual who was unearthed from the Tuchengzi site and was believed to be from the Warring States period in China. The remains exhibited segmental femoral fracture. We aimed to deduce the cause of fracture, medical interventions, healing process, and motion behavior after fracture healing using several techniques, including macroscopic observation, computed tomography (CT), and finite element analysis. Based on the morphology of the long bones, it appeared that the individual was male. The fractures resulted in an adduction angle of 5.47° and an anterior flexion

Cell membrane receptors: gateway to endogenous medicinals.

Some recent developments in the author's laboratory which rely upon the techniques of radioreceptor assays (RRA) for drugs and hormones are reviewed. These receptor studies have led, for example, to (a) the identification of 17-alpha estrogens that interact with the opiate receptor, (b) the delineation of a unique class of opiate receptor that mediates explosive motor behavior and is resistant to naloxone, (c) the discovery of progesterone derivatives and active tissue fractions that compete for specific binding sites for cardiac glycosides, (d) the observation that both the opiate and digital

Observation of Anomalous Planar Hall Effect Induced by One-Dimensional Weak Antilocalization.

The confinement of electrons in one-dimensional (1D) space highlights the prominence of the role of electron interactions or correlations, leading to a variety of fascinating physical phenomena. The quasi-1D electron states can exhibit a unique spin texture under spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and thus could generate a robust spin current by forbidden electron backscattering. Direct detection of such 1D spin or SOI information, however, is challenging due to complicated techniques. Here, we identify an anomalous planar Hall effect (APHE) in the magnetotransport of quasi-1D van der Waals (vdW) to

Specificity of autonomic arousal to anxiety in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Anxiety is one of the most concerning comorbidities in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) due to its high prevalence, negative impact on physical and psychological well-being, and interaction with core deficits of ASD. Current assessment and treatment of anxiety, which rely on the observation of behavior and self-reports, are often ineffective as ASD is associated with deficits in communication and diminished introspective ability. In this light, autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity has been suggested as a marker of physiological arousal associated with anxiety. However, physiological arousal m

Improving behavior observation audiometry testing and scoring procedures.

The need exists for improving behavioral testing of low-functioning children, particularly profoundly involved multiply handicapped children. In this study, behavior observation audiometry (BOA) was modified for systematic evaluation of childrens' responses to sound without observer bias. The data were analyzed statistically and a minimum response level was computed. This BOA technique was used to test the hearing of 82 profoundly involved handicapped children. Results suggested that BOA can be helpful in evaluating the hearing of low-functioning children.

Multi-domain Predictors of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms in Preschool Children: Cross-informant Differences.

Numerous studies indicated that agreement between parent and teacher ratings of symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children of all ages is poor, but few studies have examined the factors that may be associated with rater differences. The present study examined the contextual, parent, parenting, and child factors associated with rater differences in a community sample of 4-year-old children. Parents and teachers of 344 4-year-olds recruited from preschools and pediatric practices completed the preschool versions of the Child Symptom Inventory. Measures of socioeconomic stat

Sequences of staff-child interactions on a psychiatric inpatient unit.

Six psychiatry inpatients were observed during mealtimes to determine and evaluate staff intervention techniques. To extend and further elaborate the findings of a previous work (Pines, Kupst, Natta, & Schulman, 1985), staff behaviors (positive, punitive, isolating, and neutral) were investigated for their potential relationship to subsequent child behaviors (positive, negative, and inactive) via a lag sequential analytic approach. Staff punitive and isolating behaviors tended to be associated with significant increases in the likelihood of subsequent child negative behaviors and with signific

Clinical observations of play of hospitalized suicidal children.

This paper emphasizes the usefulness of play observation for diagnosis, treatment, and understanding suicidal behavior of children. Predictive indicators of play for potential suicidal behavior are themes of separation and loss, repetition of dangerous and reckless behavior, misuse and destruction of toys, and repetitive acting out of omnipotent fantasies. The selection of a suicidal method is partly derived from unconscious motivations that are illustrated in play themes. This study revealed a characteristic suicidal technique of latency age children seems to be jumping from heights.

Affect-induction techniques and psychophysiological response in human studies of eating behavior. A systematic review of recent studies.

Understanding the mechanisms underlying eating behavior is essential for identifying factors involved in its regulation. This review systematizes evidence on affect-induction techniques, their associated physiological responses, and their impact on eating behavior. We searched experimental studies published between 2014 and 2026 in SciELO, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science that assessed physiological responses to laboratory-induced acute stress or negative affect during eating-related tasks. A total of 43 studies met inclusion criteria. Affect induction techniques included social stress parad

Gene therapy conversion of striatal astrocytes into GABAergic neurons in mouse models of Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is caused by Huntingtin (Htt) gene mutation resulting in the loss of striatal GABAergic neurons and motor functional deficits. We report here an in vivo cell conversion technology to reprogram striatal astrocytes into GABAergic neurons in both R6/2 and YAC128 HD mouse models through AAV-mediated ectopic expression of NeuroD1 and Dlx2 transcription factors. We found that the astrocyte-to-neuron (AtN) conversion rate reached 80% in the striatum and >50% of the converted neurons were DARPP32+ medium spiny neurons. The striatal astrocyte-converted neurons showed action po

Direct Visualization and Quantitative Analysis of Silica Nanoparticle Dispersion States in Saline Solution via Cryo-TEM.

Quantitative assessment of nanoparticle dispersion in dilute, realistic solvent environments remains a critical challenge for materials intended for use in complex ionic systems, such as carbon dioxide underground and storage (CCS) and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technologies. While conventional techniques, including dynamic light scattering (DLS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), provide valuable ensemble-averaged information, they are particularly limited in dilute systems and lack the spatial resolution required to characterize local dispersion heterogeneities and microscopic agglome

Comparing State-of-the-Art Deep Learning Algorithms for the Automated Detection and Tracking of Black Cattle.

Effective livestock management is critical for cattle farms in today's competitive era of smart modern farming. To ensure farm management solutions are efficient, affordable, and scalable, the manual identification and detection of cattle are not feasible in today's farming systems. Fortunately, automatic tracking and identification systems have greatly improved in recent years. Moreover, correctly identifying individual cows is an integral part of predicting behavior during estrus. By doing so, we can monitor a cow's behavior, and pinpoint the right time for artificial insemination. However,

Objective coding of content and techniques in workplace-based supervision of an EBT in public mental health.

BACKGROUND: Workplace-based clinical supervision as an implementation strategy to support evidence-based treatment (EBT) in public mental health has received limited research attention. A commonly provided infrastructure support, it may offer a relatively cost-neutral implementation strategy for organizations. However, research has not objectively examined workplace-based supervision of EBT and specifically how it might differ from EBT supervision provided in efficacy and effectiveness trials. METHODS: Data come from a descriptive study of supervision in the context of a state-funded EBT impl

Finite element analysis between Hunsuck/Epker and novel modification of Low Z plasty technique of mandibular sagittal split osteotomy.

A novel modification of the Low Z plasty (NM-Low Z) technique for bilateral sagittal split osteotomy was recently proposed. The osteotomy line was modified more inferiorly than in the conventional Hunsuck-Epker (HE) approach. The NM-Low Z technique enhances the mandibular setback distance and degree of rotation in severe skeletal discrepancies. This study aimed to investigate the biomechanical behavior under simulated forces, and to compare the NM-Low Z and HE techniques on the mandible with Class III skeletal deformity at 1 week, 3 weeks, and 6 weeks post-operation. Delayed microglial depletion after spinal cord injury reduces chronic inflammation and neurodegeneration in the brain and improves neurological recovery in male mice.

Neuropsychological deficits, including impairments in learning and memory, occur after spinal cord injury (SCI). In experimental SCI models, we and others have reported that such changes reflect sustained microglia activation in the brain that is associated with progressive neurodegeneration. In the present study, we examined the effect of pharmacological depletion of microglia on posttraumatic cognition, depressive-like behavior, and brain pathology after SCI in mice. Methods: Young adult male C57BL/6 mice were subjected to moderate/severe thoracic spinal cord contusion. Microglial depletion
