Ethical, anticipatory genomics research on human behavior means celebrating disagreement.

Despite the many social and ethical considerations in human genetics, researchers and communities remain largely siloed as for-profit, direct-to-consumer genetic testing and the application of polygenic scores to in vitro fertilization services become increasingly prevalent. The multifaceted challenges facing genomics, both empirical and ethical, require collaborations that foster critical dialogue and honest debate between communities inside and outside the research enterprise. This piece argues that in order to respond to the premature or inappropriate use of genomic data in industry, the sc

Outcomes Associated With Adapting a Research-Supported Treatment for Children With Behavior Disorders.

PURPOSE: The aims of this study are to describe an adaptation process of a research-supported treatment (RST) for children with oppositional defiant disorder and to examine provider attitudes toward RSTs prior to and following this process. METHOD: Providers from 14 agencies in New York State delivered the adapted RST, following training. Attitudes toward RSTs were measured by the Evidence-Based Practice Attitude Scale at baseline and posttest. RESULTS: Openness toward RSTs decreased from baseline to posttest. The majority of providers reported modifications to the structure and process of t

The Pace of Technologic Change: Implications for Digital Health Behavior Intervention Research.

This paper addresses the rapid pace of change in the technologies that support digital interventions; the complexity of the health problems they aim to address; and the adaptation of scientific methods to accommodate the volume, velocity, and variety of data and interventions possible from these technologies. Information, communication, and computing technologies are now part of every societal domain and support essentially every facet of human activity. Ubiquitous computing, a vision articulated fewer than 30 years ago, has now arrived. Simultaneously, there is a global crisis in health throu

A psychosocial model of health behavior: implications for nutrition education, research and policy.

The paper presents a multidimensional psychological model of determinants of health behavior, tested empirically in three countries to ascertain its validity. The model postulates that given that ethnic, socioeconomic, and biological statuses (exogenous variables) are homogeneous, a health risk-taking behavior in a population is a function of direct, additive, and interaction effects of five categories of independent variables both internal to the persons and external in the action environment. Although the model is tested on contraceptive behavior, it is argued that the determinants and basic

Research on incentive mechanisms for veterans' participation in grassroots governance: An analysis based on behavioral expectations.

Under the modernization of grassroots governance, veterans constitute a high-quality human resource for enhancing grassroots social governance capacity. Drawing on questionnaire survey data from 525 veterans in Guizhou Province, China, this study identifies three distinct veteran groups using latent class analysis (LCA): Utilitarian (51.3%), Mission-Oriented (23.8%), and Development-Focused (24.9%). Empirical results reveal clear heterogeneity in policy responsiveness and behavioral mechanisms across groups. First, the Utilitarian group responds most strongly to Subsidies, with participation b

Octodon degus laboratory colony management principles and methods for behavioral analysis for Alzheimer's disease neuroscience research.

The Chilean degu (Octodon degus) is a medium sized, long-lived rodent with traits that make them a natural model for neuroscience research. Their social behaviors, diurnality, and extended developmental time course, when compared to other rodents, make them useful for social behavioral, chronobiology, and developmental research. Lab-kept degus have a long lifespan (5-8 years) and may naturally develop age-related diseases that resemble Alzheimer's disease. While there is significant interest in using the Octodon degus for neuroscience research, including aging and Alzheimer's disease studies,

Advancing Autism Research From Mice to Marmosets: Behavioral Development of Offspring Following Prenatal Maternal Immune Activation.

Understanding the mechanism(s) by which maternal immune activation (MIA) during gestation may disrupt neurodevelopment and increase the susceptibility for disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or schizophrenia is a critical step in the development of better treatments and preventive measures. A large body of literature has investigated the pathophysiology of MIA in rodents. However, a translatability gap plagues pre-clinical research of complex behavioral/developmental diseases and those diseases requiring clinical diagnosis, such as ASD. While ideal for their genetic flexibility, v

Improving blood donor recruitment and retention: integrating theoretical advances from social and behavioral science research agendas.

BACKGROUND: Increasing blood donor recruitment and retention is of key importance to transfusion services. Research within the social and behavioral science traditions has adopted separate but complementary approaches to addressing these issues. This article aims to review both of these types of literature, examine theoretical developments, identify commonalities, and offer a means to integrate these within a single intervention approach. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The social and behavioral science literature on blood donor recruitment and retention focusing on theory, interventions, and integ

Success and cost-effectiveness of strategies to recruit older adults to a behavioral intervention research study.

BACKGROUND: With a growing population of older adults, there is an increased need to focus on age-related research. However, recruiting this demographic can be difficult due to numerous factors. Therefore, there is a critical need to understand which recruitment methods yield the most successful and cost-effective results amongst older adults. METHODS: Multiple recruitment strategies were employed to enroll 200 older adults (ages 60-85) into a randomized controlled trial investigating the impact of a behavioral sleep intervention on cognitive function. Success and cost-effectiveness of each s

Physiological and Behavioral Effects of Onchocerca ochengi Infection in Gerbils: Implications for Onchocerciasis-Associated Epilepsy Research.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate whether Onchocerca ochengi infection directly causes epilepsy. Although O. ochengi—a cattle parasite phylogenetically related to O. volvulus—shares biological similarities with its human counterpart, it has not been epidemiologically linked to epilepsy in bovines, unlike O. volvulus, which has been associated with onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy in humans. No prior experimental studies have established a causal relationship between onchocerciasis and epilepsy. METHODS: Gerbils were surgically implanted with O. ochengi worm masses (test group) or unde

Meta-Chlorophenylpiperazine-Induced Behavioral Changes in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Research: A Systematic Review of Rodent Studies.

Meta-chlorophenylpiperazine (mCPP) was one of the first compounds used in clinical and preclinical studies that demonstrated the role of serotonin in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This systematic review aimed to (a) identify publications that report in rodents the effects of mCPP relevant to OCD, (b) explore the methodological characteristics of these studies, and (c) summarize the profile of mCPP effects. A comprehensive literature search was performed using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Search terms were a combination of obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD and meta-chlorophenyl

Disgust and behavioral avoidance in colorectal cancer screening and treatment: a systematic review and research agenda.

BACKGROUND: The emotion of disgust appears to promote psychological and behavioral avoidance, a dynamic that has significant implications in physical and psychological outcomes in colorectal cancer (CRC). Patients, caregivers, and health professionals alike are all potentially susceptible to responding with disgust and the associated avoidance. OBJECTIVE: This article aimed to review the early-stage literature related to disgust and CRC, consider the clinical implications, and suggest an appropriate research agenda. METHODS: Given limited research in this area, a systematic review of the lit

The effect of different working definitions on behavioral research involving stereotypies in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus).

Many sources of variation in animal experiments are related to characteristics of the animal or its husbandry conditions. In ethologic studies, observational methods can also affect interexperimental variation. Different descriptions for a behavior can lead to divergent findings that may be incorrectly attributed to other factors if not recognized as stemming from a classification dissonance. Here we discuss 2 observational studies in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). The first study describes how data vary when 2 different working definitions are used for stereotypic digging: WD(mor)

Research Review: Conceptualizing and measuring 'problem behavior' in early intervention autism research - a project AIM secondary systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Some autistic children exhibit behavior that caregivers, clinicians, and researchers consider problematic. However, there is little consensus about the types of behaviors that should be treated as a problem and reduced via intervention. In autism intervention research, problem behaviors range from inherently harmful behaviors such as aggression and self-injury to nonnormative but not harmful behaviors associated with autism such as repetitive movements. Likewise, there are a variety of conceptualizations and measurement practices used to assess these behaviors. METHODS: In this se

Beyond Latency: Chronic Toxoplasma Infection and Its Unveiled Behavioral and Clinical Manifestations-A 30-Year Research Perspective.

Over the past three turbulent decades, research has profoundly reshaped our understanding of chronic Toxoplasma gondii infection-traditionally regarded as harmless in immunocompetent individuals-unveiling its surprising impact on human health, performance, and behavior. This review emphasizes the effects of chronic Toxoplasma infection on physical and mental health, cognitive performance, and behavioral changes, highlighting key findings from studies investigating these domains, with a particular focus on both ultimate and proximate mechanisms underlying the observed effects. To this end, the
