Evidence-Based School Behavior Assessment of Externalizing Behavior in Young Children.

This study examined the psychometric properties of the Revised Edition of the School Observation Coding System (REDSOCS). Participants were 68 children ages 3 to 6 who completed parent-child interaction therapy for Oppositional Defiant Disorder as part of a larger efficacy trial. Interobserver reliability on REDSOCS categories was moderate to high, with percent agreement ranging from 47% to 90% (M = 67%) and Cohen's kappa coefficients ranging from .69 to .95 (M = .82). Convergent validity of the REDSOCS categories was supported by significant correlations with the Intensity Scale of the Sutter

The adolescent behavioral repertoire as a context for drug exposure: behavioral autarcesis at play.

AIMS: The aim of this study is to investigate suspected behavioral autarcesis. Autarcesis refers to a mechanism of non-specific shielding from or immunity to infection or disease. Here, suspecting that some facets of the adolescent behavioral repertoire (ABR) might shield youths from early drug involvement, we studied recent-onset occurrence of first chances to try a drug and first actual drug use, expressed as a function of five observed ABR dimensions: religious, socializing, sports-related, gender socialization, and home-based activities. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: Nationally representative

Sexual behavior problems in preteen children: developmental, ecological, and behavioral correlates.

A large sample of 2-12 year old children (N = 2311) was studied to determine the relationship between three sexually intrusive behavior items (SIBs) measured by the Child Sexual Behavior Inventory (CSBI) and a range of developmental, ecological, and behavioral correlates. The variables studied included age, gender, race, family income, single parent status, maternal education, family sexual behaviors, physical abuse, sexual abuse, domestic violence, social competence of the child, and three scales from the CBCL (Internalizing, Externalizing, and PTSD). Sexual abuse was not the primary predicto

The Aberrant Behavior Checklist and the Behavior Problems Inventory: convergent and divergent validity.

This study was designed to compare and cross-validate two rating instruments [the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) and the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI)] for assessing maladaptive behavior. The BPI assesses three types of behavior problems: Self-Injurious Behavior (SIB), Stereotyped Behavior and Aggressive/Destructive Behavior. The ABC assesses five domains including these three. We collected data on 226 adults, mostly with severe or profound mental retardation, from a medium-sized developmental center. Individuals with elevated BPI scores generally had higher ABC scores; however, the ext

Covariations of eating behaviors with other health-related behaviors among adolescents.

PURPOSE: The study objectives are: (1) to examine and compare patterns of covariation of a wide range of health behaviors among adolescent boys and girls; (2) to determine whether eating behaviors are part of a larger construct of health-related behaviors and to identify the behaviors with which they share underlying similarities; and (3) to determine whether youth engaging in other health-compromising behaviors are at risk for unhealthy eating. METHODS: Data were analyzed from the Minnesota Adolescent Health Survey, a classroom-administered questionnaire, completed by 36,284 adolescents, in

Classroom behavior and family climate in students with learning disabilities and hyperactive behavior.

The present study aimed to identify subtypes of the learning disabilities (LD) syndrome by examining classroom behavior and family climate among four groups of Israeli students ranging in age from 7 to 10 years: 22 students with LD and hyperactive behavior (HB), 22 nonhyperactive students with LD, 20 nondisabled students with HB, and 20 nondisabled nonhyperactive students. Schaefer's Classroom Behavior Inventory and Moos's Family Environmental Scale were administered to teachers and mothers, respectively. The results revealed that higher distractibility and hostility among both groups with HB

Clinical, behavioral, and physiological characteristics of isolated rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder patients with ambulatory dream enactment behaviors.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Isolated rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) involves dream enactment behaviors (DEBs) during REM sleep, accompanied by REM sleep without atonia (RWA). While most DEBs are bed-confined, a minority engage in ambulatory behaviors. This study investigated clinical, behavioral, and physiological characteristics of iRBD patients exhibiting ambulatory behaviors. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed electronic medical records of 361 patients with video-polysomnography (v-PSG)-confirmed iRBD (mean age: 66.9 years; 59.0% males). Patients reporting at least one DEB

A behavioral measure for spite.

Spite occurs when someone harms another individual at a personal cost to themselves. Spite is studied by evolutionary biologists and personality psychologists, but little behavioral spite research exists. A social discounting task was modified to determine whether repeated choices to spite a disliked person would decrease with social distance and/or increase as loss amount for the other disliked person increased. In Experiment 1, more than 50% of participants made at least one spiteful choice, resulting in less hypothetical rewards for themselves. Spite rates generally decreased hyperbolically

Cognitive Behavior Therapy.

Cognitive behavior therapy is an evidence-based, time-limited psychotherapy that uses goal-oriented interventions to treat various mental and physical health conditions across the lifespan. It is used alone or with pharmacologic interventions to help patients modify problematic thoughts, behaviors, and emotions that maintain functional impairment. It is a primary treatment for tinnitus, fatigue, and trauma, somatic symptom, tic, insomnia, and borderline personality disorders. Cognitive behavior therapy or medication is the primary treatment for sexual dysfunction, anxiety, depressive, and obse

Sleep and suicidal behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal behaviors-including suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and suicide deaths-represent a major global health concern. Identifying proximal, modifiable risk factors is crucial to improve early detection and prevention. Sleep disturbances have emerged as proximal and modifiable risk factor for suicide, yet their role is often underestimated in clinical practice. METHODS: This chapter synthesizes evidence from epidemiological, clinical, and neurobiological studies examining the associations between sleep disturbances and suicidal behaviors. Both subjective (insomnia, nightmar

Psychostimulants and social behaviors.

Mounting evidence from animal models and human studies indicates that psychostimulants can significantly affect social behaviors. This is not surprising considering that the neural circuits underlying the regulation and expression of social behaviors are highly overlapped with those targeted by psychostimulants, which in most cases have strong rewarding and, consequently, addictive properties. In the present work, we provide an overview regarding the effects of illicit and prescription psychostimulants, such as cocaine, amphetamine-type stimulants, methylphenidate or modafinil, upon social beh

The adhesion behavior of the retina.

Ocular diseases and treatment related to rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) are highly correlated with retinal adhesion behavior. Therefore, this paper proposes to study the adhesion behavior of the intact retina. This can provide theoretical guidance for the treatment and research of retinal detachment (RD) related diseases. To systematically analyze this aspect, two experiments were performed on the porcine retina. The pull-off test combined with the modified JKR theory was used to study the adhesion behavior of the vitreoretinal interface, while the peeling test was used to study the a

Behavioral Symptomatology in the Premenstruum.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep and eating behaviors are disturbed during the premenstrual phase of the menstrual cycle in a significant number of reproductive-age women. Despite their impact on the development and control of chronic health conditions, these behaviors are poorly understood. In the present study, we sought to identify affective and psychological factors which associate with premenstrual changes in sleeping and eating behaviors and assess how they impact functionality. METHODS: Fifty-seven women provided daily ratings of premenstrual symptomatology and functionality across two-three menstrual

Personality and behavioral dishonesty.

The past two decades have seen major developments in the study of behavioral (dis)honesty and its measurement as well as a surge of interest in the location of trait honesty within models of basic personality structure and the role of personality traits in behavioral dishonesty more generally. The present review provides an overview of the corresponding literature with a particular emphasis on recent developments and identifies the research questions for which we now have relatively reliable knowledge as well as those that will require future research.

The Legacy of Sickness Behaviors.

Systemic infections of all types lead to a syndrome known as sickness behaviors. Changes in the behavior of febrile humans and animals formed the original basis for this concept. Body temperature is behaviorally regulated in both endotherms and ectotherms. However, infections cause other changes in body functions, including sleep disruption, anorexia, cognitive and memory deficits and disorientation. The brain mediates this entire cluster of symptoms, even though most major infections occur outside the brain. The true importance of sickness behaviors is not the numerous discoveries of symptoms

[Clocks, Behavior, and Cognition].

The nerve center responsible for controlling our circadian rhythm is located in a cluster of cells known as the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the hypothalamus. Various physiological functions such as sleep, arousal, blood pressure, body temperature, and hormone secretion are regulated in a 24-hour rhythm by this circuit. Somatic cells of other organs have a peripheral clock gene and by synchronizing the rhythm of the central and peripheral clocks, it is possible to live a healthy life. Due to aging and degenerative disease, circadian rhythm gradually collapses. Factors that can contribute to this
