Study of multiple-component adsorption on the surface of activated carbon using a model system of benzyl alcohol and phenobarbital.

The purpose of this work was to characterize the surface of activated carbon and to study the specificity of interactions using multicomponent adsorption. The competition between phenobarbital and benzyl alcohol was studied by conducting multicomponent-adsorption experiments. Benzyl alcohol and phenobarbital were combined to form a bisolute system. The adsorption of the bisolute system from simulated intestinal fluid (without pancreatin) by activated carbon was studied by using the rotating bottle method. The concentrations, both before and after the attainment of equilibrium, were determined

Barrierless proton and hydrogen atom migrations in photoionized benzaldehyde clusters result in benzyl alcohol formation: an ion-molecule perspective.

Reported here is a study on intermolecular proton and H atom transfers in photoionized small clusters of benzaldehyde in a supersonic jet expansion. The clusters were photoionized by the fourth harmonic wavelength (266 nm) of a Q-switched picosecond (30 ps) Nd:YAG laser, and the resulting photoproducts were probed by means of time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The recorded mass spectrum reveals the formation of protonated benzaldehyde (PhCHO)H+, a protonated benzaldehyde dimer [(PhCHO)2H]+, and a benzyl alcohol cation (PhCH2OH)˙+ as the signatures of intracluster H+/H transfer reactions. Effects of temperature and benzyl alcohol on the structure and adenylate cyclase activity of plasma membranes from bovine adrenal cortex.

Adenylate cyclase activation by corticotropin (ACTH), fluoride and forskolin was studied as a function of membrane structure in plasma membranes from bovine adrenal cortex. The composition of these membranes was characterized by a very low cholesterol and sphingomyelin content and a high protein content. The fluorescent probes 1,6-diphenylhexa-1,3,5-triene (DPH) and a cationic analogue 1-[4-(trimethylamino)phenyl]-6-phenylhexa-1,3,5-triene (TMA-DPH) were, respectively, used to probe the hydrophobic and polar head regions of the bilayer. When both probes were embedded either in the plasma membr

Tetrazole derivatives synthesis via green one-pot oxidation of benzyl alcohol using Cu(ii) immobilized on nanodiamond@folic acid catalyst.

Tetrazoles are highly significant in pharmaceuticals, drug delivery, and anticancer treatments. In this work, the development of a highly effective nanocatalyst, which was synthesized by functionalizing nanodiamonds (NDs) substrate with folic acid (FA) and stabilizing Cu(ii) on the nanocomposite. The ND@FA-Cu(ii) nanocatalyst has demonstrated superior thermal stability, non-toxicity, little catalyst consumption, and reusability (up to five cycles), rendering it both cost-effective and environmentally sustainable. The catalytic efficacy of ND@FA-Cu(ii) was assessed in the production of 1H-tetra

Non-equilibrium dynamics at the gas-liquid interface: State-resolved studies of NO evaporation from a benzyl alcohol liquid microjet.

First measurements of internal quantum-state distributions for nitric oxide (NO) evaporating from liquid benzyl alcohol are presented over a broad range of temperatures, performed by liquid-microjet techniques in an essentially collision-free regime, with rotational/spin-orbit populations in the 2Π1/2,3/2 manifolds measured by laser-induced fluorescence. The observed rotational distributions exhibit highly linear (i.e., thermal) Boltzmann plots but notably reflect rotational temperatures (Trot) as much as 30 K lower than the liquid temperature (Tjet). A comparable lack of equilibrium behavior

Copper-catalyzed and Y(OTf)3-promoted deoxyaminative alkylation of imidazo[1,2-a] pyridines with benzyl alcohols and amines.

A straightforward and efficient Cu(OAc)2/TEMPO-catalyzed and then Y(OTf)3-promoted protocol for deoxyaminative alkylation of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines with benzyl alcohols and amines has been developed. This protocol enables the direct use of readily available alcohols as alkylating agents for constructing valuable functionalized imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives under mild aerobic conditions, featuring atomic economy, a broad substrate scope, and excellent functional group tolerance. Moreover, this transformation can be readily scaled up to the gram scale and allows for further modification, h

A COF template-derived mesoporous CeO2-supported Au nanoparticles catalyst for the oxidative esterification of benzaldehydes and benzyl alcohols.

The direct oxidative esterification of benzaldehydes and benzyl alcohols to high value-added aromatic esters under mild and green reaction conditions is significant in the fine chemical industry. The accurate design of catalysts with high catalytic performance is crucial for this process. Herein, 2,4,6-trimethylpyridine, benzoic anhydride, and terephthalaldehyde were used to prepare a covalent organic framework (COF) material, which was then used as a template to construct a mesoporous CeO2-supported Au nanoparticles catalyst. The obtained Au@CeO2 catalyst was thoroughly characterized, and it

The impact of the length of alkyl chain on the behavior of benzyl alcohol homologues - the interplay between dispersive and hydrogen bond interactions.

In this work, we examined the effect of the length of alkyl chain attached to the benzene ring on the self-assembling phenomena for a series of phenyl alcohol (PhA) derivatives, from phenylmethanol (benzyl alcohol) to 7-phenyl-1-heptanol, by means of X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS) methods. XRD data in the reciprocal and real spaces showed a gradual increase in the local order with the elongation of the alkyl chain. However, the position and full width at half maximum o

The clinical trials supporting benzyl alcohol lotion 5% (Ulesfia): a safe and effective topical treatment for head lice (pediculosis humanus capitis).

Benzyl alcohol lotion 5% (BAL 5%) is a non-neurotoxic topical head lice treatment that is safe and effective in children as young as 6 months of age. The safety and efficacy of this pediculicide has been studied in 695 (confirm number) subjects in all phases of clinical development. Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) demonstrated that the active agent appears to stun the breathing spiracles open, enabling the vehicle to penetrate the respiratory mechanism (spiracles), therefore asphyxiating the lice. Initial phase II trials compared this novel product to RID using identical volumes of treatme

Squaramide-Catalyzed Asymmetric Intramolecular Oxa-Michael Reaction of α,β-Unsaturated Carbonyls Containing Benzyl Alcohol: Construction of Chiral 1-Substituted Phthalans.

Organocatalytic enantioselective intramolecular oxa-Michael reactions of benzyl alcohol bearing α,β-unsaturated carbonyls as Michael acceptors are presented herein. Using cinchona squaramide-based organocatalyst, enones as well as α,β-unsaturated esters containing benzyl alcohol provided their corresponding 1,3-dihydroisobenzofuranyl-1-methylene ketones and 1,3-dihydroisobenzofuranyl-1-methylene esters in excellent yields with high enantioselectivities. In addition, enantioenriched 1,3-dihydroisobenzofuranyl-1-methylene ketone could be obtained from the Wittig/oxa-Michael reaction cascade of 1

Visible-Light-Catalyzed Radical-Radical Cross-Coupling Reaction of Benzyl Trifluoroborates and Carbonyl Compounds to Sterically Hindered Alcohols.

We report here an organic dye catalyzed direct radical-radical cross-coupling reaction based on the persistent free-radical effect (PRE), which is powered by visible light and does not require any external oxidants or reductants. In this reaction, benzyl trifluoroborates are oxidized by excited-state 4Cz-IPN to generate benzyl radicals, and the resulting boron trifluoride acts as a Lewis acid to reduce the reduction potential of carbonyl compounds. The dual roles of benzyl trifluoroborates enable aldehydes, ketones, diketones, and ketone esters to react with benzyl trifluoroborates to generate

Intermolecular amination of allylic and benzylic alcohols leads to effective inhibitions of acetylcholinesterase enzyme and carbonic anhydrase I and II isoenzymes.

In this study, we aimed to determine the inhibition effects of novel synthesized sulfamates (2a-g), sulfonamides (3b-f), carbonyl sulfonamides (3h and i), and carbonyl sulfamates (4h and 4i), which were tested against two human cytosolic carbonic anhydrase I and II isozymes (hCA I and II) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme. For inhibition properties of allylic sulfamates, the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50 ) and inhibition constant (Ki ) were calculated for each novel compounds. The allylic sulfamates showed that Ki values are in the range of 187.33-510.31 pM for hCA I, 104.22

A versatile and one-pot strategy to synthesize α-amino ketones from benzylic secondary alcohols using N-bromosuccinimide.

A metal-free one-pot strategy has been developed for the first time to synthesize pharmaceutically important α-amino ketones from readily available benzylic secondary alcohols and amines using N-bromosuccinimide. This new reaction proceeds via three consecutive steps involving oxidation of alcohols, α-bromination of ketones, and nucleophilic substitution of α-bromo ketones to give α-amino ketones. Importantly, this novel one-pot greener reaction avoids direct usage of toxic and corrosive bromine. This methodology has been employed efficiently to synthesize pharmaceutically important amfepramon

Catalytic Acceptorless Dehydrogenation (CAD) of Secondary Benzylic Alcohols into Value-Added Ketones Using Pd(II)-NHC Complexes.

For the creation of adaptable carbonyl compounds in organic synthesis, the oxidation of alcohols is a crucial step. As a sustainable alternative to the harmful traditional oxidation processes, transition-metal catalysts have recently attracted a lot of interest in acceptorless dehydrogenation reactions of alcohols. Here, using well-defined, air-stable palladium(II)-NHC catalysts (A-F), we demonstrate an effective method for the catalytic acceptorless dehydrogenation (CAD) reaction of secondary benzylic alcohols to produce the corresponding ketones and molecular hydrogen (H2). Mechanisms in the Synthesis of S-Alcohols with 1,4-NADH Biomimetic Co-factor N-Benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide using Horse Liver Alcohol Dehydrogenase: A Hybrid Computational Study.

The enantioselective reduction of prochiral ketones catalyzed by horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase (HLADH), was investigated via a hybrid computational approach, for molecular reactions involved in chiral synthesis of S-alcohols, when the natural co-factor, 1,4-dihyronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, 1,4-NADH, was replaced with biomimetic co-factor, N-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide, 1. We surmised that different hydride and proton transfer mechanisms were involved using co-factor, 1. An alternative mechanism, where the hydride transfer step occurred, via an η1-keto-S-η2-5,6-1,4-dihydronicotin

Ru(III)-Modified Trinuclear Nickel Cluster Metal-Organic Framework as a Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Selective Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation and Accelerating Hydrogen Evolution.

Nickel-based materials, due to their low cost, high activity, and dual-function characteristics, have become the most promising catalyst system in the field of biomass electrocatalytic conversion coupled with hydrogen production. The activity of the catalyst and the selectivity of the reaction still present significant challenges. Herein, utilizing the conjugated aromatic tetracarboxylic acids (H4TCPB = 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl) benzene), one new trinuclear Ni(II)-based anionic metal-organic framework Li[Ni3(μ3-OH)(TCPB)1.5(H2O)3]·6DMA (denoted as Ni-MOF) was first obtained, and its ap
