BACKGROUND: Nurses play a pivotal role in end-of-life care, providing physical comfort, emotional support, and bereavement guidance for patients and families. However, their contribution often remains under recognized in healthcare systems. This systematic review aimed to synthesize existing evidence on the role of nurses during death and bereavement and highlight their contribution, challenges, and impact.
METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Cumulated Index in Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Scopus, Google Scholar and Web of Sciences for articles published be

BACKGROUND: The Lancet Ending Preventable Stillbirths series issued a global Call to Action to reduce stillbirths and improve bereavement care. To monitor progress, we developed a global scorecard to track performance on key indicators.
OBJECTIVES: To introduce the scorecard and demonstrate its utility with a worked example by comparing global and regional performance in 2022 versus 2018.
METHODS: Descriptive analysis of performance across 20 nominated indicators spanning mortality targets, universal health coverage targets and milestones for ending preventable stillbirths. Data were extract

BACKGROUND: Perinatal bereavement, including miscarriage, stillbirth, and neonatal death, poses profound psychological challenges for parents. Midwives are often the primary professionals supporting families through this process. However, many report feeling underprepared, lacking confidence, and experiencing compassion fatigue, which may affect the quality of care.
AIM: This study aimed to examine midwives' competence in perinatal bereavement care within the framework of the Socio-Ecological Model, focusing on the influence of individual, interpersonal, and organizational factors, as well as

IMPORTANCE: Traumatic events have been associated with elevated risks of psychiatric disorders, while the contributions of familial factors to these associations remain less clear.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the contribution of familial factors to long-term incidence trajectories of psychiatric disorders following potentially traumatic events.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study evaluated 3 separate cohorts of individuals residing in Sweden who were free of previous diagnosed psychiatric disorders when first exposed to assault (n = 49 957), injury (n = 555 314), or bereavement

AIM: Spouse bereavement is one of life's greatest stresses and has been suggested to trigger or accelerate cognitive decline and dementia. However, little information is available about the potential brain pathologies underlying the association between spouse bereavement and cognitive decline. We aimed to investigate that lifetime spouse bereavement is associated with in vivo human brain pathologies underlying cognitive decline.
METHODS: A total of 319 ever-married older adults between the ages of 61 and 90 years underwent comprehensive clinical assessments and multimodal brain imaging includ

OBJECTIVES: Perinatal bereavement care is a complex area of practice. The COVID-19 pandemic led to reconfiguration of maternity and perinatal bereavement care services. This study explores Australian health care providers' perspectives of the impact of COVID-19 on the provision of respectful and supportive care following stillbirth or neonatal death.
METHODS: Members of a perinatal bereavement care network were consulted at the commencement of the pandemic in Australia using an online feedback form. Respondents provided ratings and free-text comments on the impact of COVID-19 on implementatio

Bereavement is the state of loss, determined in most of the cases by the death of a close person. It is probably the greatest sorrow that can occur in an individual life. Grief is a normal, healthy response to loss, evolving through stages in the process of mourning. In some cases, bereavement may lead to the outburst of manic episode: despite literature data being scarce, reports have explored this important clinical entity, variously called as "funeral mania" or "bereavement mania". We systematically reviewed the literature exploring the possible relationships between bereavement and the ons

OBJECTIVES: The construct of complicated grief (CG) has garnered increased empirical attention since it has been proposed as a diagnostic category for the upcoming Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-V. The aim of this article is to critically examine construct validity in light of a proposed conceptual framework, with special emphasis on understanding late-life bereavement.
METHOD: This is a review article that critically examined current bereavement and grief models. We explored discriminant and convergent validity between CG and uncomplicated grief (UG) and other psychopa

Numerous articles stress the unique problems of mourning an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related death and suggest psychotherapeutic interventions. However, no studies have been conducted that identify what differs in the grief process when the death was AIDS-associated and whether the extensive clinical and research literature on bereavement can be generalized to AIDS. This paper focuses on a bereaved population that has suffered AIDS-related loss--the uninfected children of mothers who die of AIDS, a group that has been referred to as "AIDS orphans." We begin with a brief discus

The Two-Track Model of Bereavement (TTMB) and the Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement (DPM) are two central models in the field of thanatology, offering theoretical frameworks for understanding how individuals cope with loss. While the two models share several fundamental principles - most notably the conceptualization of grief as a bidimensional process involving the interplay between mourning and functional adaptation to life after loss - they differ in their components, underlying theoretical assumptions, and clinical emphases, yielding complementary strengths that together can en

BACKGROUND: A distinct grief-specific disorder is included in the ICD-11. Lack of clarity remains regarding whether different proposed diagnostic criteria capture similar or different diagnostic entities. Our aim was to examine the specificity of four proposed diagnostic criteria-sets for pathological grief in a population-based sample.
METHODS: Participants were 206 conjugally bereaved elderly Danes (59% female; mean age = 72.5 years, SD = 4.2; range 65-81) who completed self-report questionnaires six months post-loss. The main measure was the Danish version of Inventory of Complicated Grief

Research has indicated that the negative effects of bereavement on health among elderly men occur within the first six to twelve months following a bereavement event while other studies indicate that the death of a loved one can have long-term effects on social functioning and mental health (Arbuckle & DeVries, 1995; Vinick, 1983a). However, employment has been found to buffer the strain produced by stressful life events. The purpose of this study was to examine the differential effects of employment on physical and mental health between elderly men bereaved for one year and elderly men bereav

Grief and bereavement support are essential for patients and family members facing serious illness and the end of life. In total, 126 participants attended a 2-day palliative care training for oncology, the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium Oncology advanced practice registered nurse course, supported by a grant from the National Cancer Institute. Participants were asked to complete 3 open-ended questions and an 11-item survey assessing their confidence in providing bereavement support for patients and family members facing serious illness and end of life in postcourse evaluations. BACKGROUND: Yearning is the hallmark of grief and prolonged grief disorder, but its psychological underpinnings are poorly understood. We aimed to address this by building on the phenomenological similarities with craving and investigating the role of desire thinking, a voluntary cognitive process central to activating craving.
OBJECTIVE: Determining the factorial and psychometric properties of the Oxford Grief Desire Thinking scale (OG-DT) and testing whether desire thinking dimensions prospectively predict proximity-seeking, and whether this association is mediated by subsequent yearning.

IMPORTANCE: Childhood bereavement increases the risk of common psychiatric disorders later in life. However, the role of stress resilience in this association remains underexplored.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether stress resilience mediates the association between childhood bereavement and psychiatric disorder risk in adulthood.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Three matched cohort studies were performed using data recorded in the Swedish Military Conscription Register. Individuals with childhood loss of either a parent or a sibling (19 162 participants), a parent (16 247 participants), or a

Loss and bereavement may precede mood episodes in bipolar disorders (BD). When a loved one dies, this is a stressful life event with a negative connotation that can trigger the onset of symptoms of both polarities (depressive or manic) of BD or lead to the emergence of the first mood episodes. Even though the relationships between death and depression are better known in the literature and clinical practice, the associations between bereavement and (hypo-)mania are less clear. To date, information on "funeral mania", also called "grief mania" or "bereavement mania", is rather limited, remainin

Anniversary reactions are an accepted part of bereavement, but recent research demonstrates that ARs can be seen across many traumatic events. The present study explores how constructivist theories could characterize ARs caused by the death of a loved one or sexual violence. N = 234 women answered questionnaires regarding their posttraumatic adjustment, meaning made of the trauma, trauma centrality, and social validation or invalidation of their trauma. Our data demonstrate that ARs are marked by statistically and clinically significant increases posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. Partici

Stressful or traumatic life events can lead to emergence of mood episodes. Events such as migration, relocation, job loss, bankruptcy, economic loss, divorce, natural disasters, accidental injury, or the loss of a loved one can trigger the first episode of bipolar disorder. After such life events, symptoms of depressive episodes often appear. Funeral mania, on the other hand, is defined as the emergence of manic episodes following the death of a close family member. Information on funeral mania, which occurs shortly after the loss of a loved one, is limited with a few case reports. In this stu
