When family betrays: kinship and infidelity in Turkish prime-time series.

This study explored how infidelity is represented in popular Turkish television dramas, focusing particularly on its prevalence within family and kinship ties. A qualitative content analysis was conducted on 19 prime-time series broadcasts on five major Turkish channels in 2022. Findings revealed that 95% of the series depicted infidelity, resulting in 39 unique encounters involving either sexual or romantic betrayal. Notably, 64% of these incidents occurred within family or kinship networks (e.g. brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins), while only 5% involved complete strangers. Infidelity

Resting-State Neural Signatures of Moral Injury: Associations With Rumination.

BACKGROUND: Moral injury (MI) is a condition that may emerge following a violation of an individual's moral code. MI leads to significant functional impairment in many trauma-exposed civilians, with rumination proposed as a mechanism of action. Little is known about the neuropathophysiology of different MI dimensions, including MI related to transgressions caused by the self or others. We examined links between facets of MI, resting-state amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF), and rumination in trauma-exposed civilians. METHODS: Sixty adults (ages 18-56 years; 51 female) completed me

Once BITTEN, Twice Shy: An Applied Trauma-Informed Healthcare Model.

Nurses need a pragmatic theory to understand and respond to the impact of vulnerable patients' previous healthcare experiences, as these are likely to influence response and adherence to treatment plans. The authors of this paper present the new BITTEN (Betrayal history by health-related institutions, Indicator for healthcare engagement, Traumas related to healthcare, Trust in healthcare providers, patient Expectations and Needs) Model of Trauma-Informed Healthcare. BITTEN identifies patients' current healthcare expectations and needs as a function of their previous betrayal by healthcare syst

"I Betrayed Myself": A Mixed Methods Study of Moral Injury Among Survivors of Intimate Partner Sexual Violence.

This study examined moral injury (MI) among women survivors (N = 142) of intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV). IPSV was significantly associated with shame-related moral injury, trust-violation-related moral injury, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Results revealed significant indirect effects of IPSV on PTSD via shame-related moral injury and trust-violation-related moral injury. Reflexive thematic analysis of open-ended responses identified three key themes: (a) Self-Betrayal, (b) Self-Blame, and (c) Other-Betrayal. Our findings indicate that moral injury may serve as an importan

Should I Stay or Should I Go After Infidelity: Pathways to Relationship Preservation After an Affair Amongst Individuals Accessing Social Media Contents on Post-Infidelity Recovery and Reconciliation.

Infidelity is one of the most devastating events in a relationship, yet many couples choose to reconcile and stay together in its aftermath. There is scarce research on how likely such an outcome is amongst individuals motivated to achieve it as well as on pathways to and predictors of relationship preservation, defined as remaining in the original relationship. This study administered the Pathways Through Infidelity Survey to individuals who have had an affair ("commitment-breaking partners") and whose partner has had an affair ("betrayal-experiencing partners") recruited through the social m

The prominent impact of pre-deployment aggression on moral injury outcomes post-discharge: a six-year longitudinal study of former Israeli combatants.

BACKGROUND: Moral injury (MI) is a potential clinical problem associated with distress following exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs). While previous studies have linked PMIEs to MI outcomes such as shame and trust violation, few have examined the role of pre-enlistment personality traits in predicting MI. This study investigates whether pre-deployment aggression contributes to MI outcomes among recently discharged Israeli combat veterans, both directly and indirectly, through exposure to PMIEs. DESIGN: A six-year longitudinal study. METHODS: 169 Israeli combat veterans w

The contribution of childhood adversity and potentially traumatic events during military service to PTSD and complex PTSD symptoms among Israeli women veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs) during military service are associated with mental health problems. However, knowledge about relative contributions of these factors to non-U.S. women combat veterans' posttraumatic sequelae is sparse. This study examines associations between ACEs, combat exposure (CES), military sexual trauma (MST), potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and complex PTSD (CPTSD) symptoms among women veterans. METHOD: A volunteer sample of Israeli women combat vetera

Pre-deployment aggressiveness, combat exposure and moral injury as contributors to posttraumatic stress symptoms among combatants: A two-year prospective study.

Combatants who are exposed to events which transgress deeply held moral beliefs might face lasting psychopathological outcomes such as Moral Injury (MI) and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). However, insight about pre-deployment personality factors which might facilitate the MI process and its negative consequences is sparse. In this prospective study, we examined pre-deployment aggressiveness as a possible predictor of exposure to combat and potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs), trauma-related guilt and shame and PTSS among Israeli active-duty combatants. A sample of 335 active-du

Moral Injury, Mental Disorders, and Suicidal Behavior Among Health Professionals During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Network Analysis.

During extreme conditions such as the COVID-19 pandemic, health professionals were susceptible to mental health issues. A series of network analyses were performed to explore the relationship between moral injury and depressive symptoms, anxiety symptom, PTSD symptom, and suicidal behaviors in 14,993 health professionals. Depressive symptoms were identified as the main pathway through which moral injury led to suicidal behavior, and betrayal was the most significant bridge symptom for moral injury with PTSD, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. The symptom profiles of MI associated with the commo

Evaluating the association between potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) and types of psychological distress. A systematic review.

Background: Potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) are experiences that violate deeply held moral values through one's own transgressive actions (commission), failing to prevent or witnessing wrongdoing (omission), or betrayal by a trusted person. PMIE exposure has been linked to psychological distress, but it is unclear whether different PMIE subtypes confer distinct patterns of risk. This systematic review examined associations between specific PMIE subtypes and key psychological outcomes. Methods: Multiple databases were searched for quantitative studies that assessed PMIE subtypes in

Meaning in life moderates the association between morally injurious experiences and suicide ideation among U.S. combat veterans: Results from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study.

OBJECTIVE: Effectively responding to suicide risk among veterans involves further developing understanding of reactions to combat experiences, including life-threatening events, traumatic losses, and morally injurious experiences. An important determinant of whether stressors lead to poor mental health outcomes is the perception of meaning. The current study aimed to determine whether global meaning (i.e., general beliefs, goals, and sense of purpose in life) moderates the relationship between morally injurious experiences and suicide ideation among combat veterans. METHOD: This analysis exam

Infected Lives: Lived Experiences of Young African American HIV-Positive Women.

This hermeneutic phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of young African American HIV-infected women. Eleven women between the ages of 21 and 35 participated. One pattern, Infected Lives, and three themes--Living Alone With HIV, Living With Unresolved Conflicts, and Living With Multiple Layers of Betrayal--emerged. The pattern and themes portray the very complex and challenging experiences faced by these young women living with HIV infection. They have experienced isolation, abandonment, betrayal, and discrimination in their interpersonal and social systems. They often dealt wit

A change of heart: cardiovascular correlates of forgiveness in response to interpersonal conflict.

This study sought to examine the psychophysiological correlates of forgiveness in response to interpersonal conflict. One hundred eight college students (44 males and 64 females) participated in two interviews about times of interpersonal betrayal, one about a parent and one about a friend/partner. Measures of forgiving personality and state forgiveness were collected, as well as stress, hostility, empathy, and self-reported illness symptoms. During baseline, interviews and recovery periods, repeated measures were taken of blood pressure, heart rate, frontalis EMG, and skin conductance. Trait

State of the Knowledge of VA Military Sexual Trauma Research.

Despite substantial efforts to counter sexual assault and harassment in the military, both remain persistent in the Armed Services. In February 2021, President Biden directed the U.S. Department of Defense to establish a 90-day Independent Review Commission on Sexual Assault in the Military (IRC) to assess the department's efforts and make actionable recommendations. As servicemembers discharge from the military, effects of military sexual trauma (MST) are often seen in the Veterans Health Administration (VA). In response to an IRC inquiry about VA MST research, we organized an overview on pre

Rumination and threat-biased interpretation mediate posttraumatic stress and growth responses to military stressors.

We examined the role of rumination and threat-biased interpretation in stress and growth responses to military stressors. Two online surveys were completed by 183 (survey 1) and 393 (survey 2) currently serving or retired military personnel. The surveys measured exposure to potential military stressors (exposure to combat, witnessing the consequences of war, and perceived moral injury), posttraumatic stress symptomatology (PTSS), posttraumatic growth (PTG), and personal wellbeing, with survey 1 including measures of rumination, and survey 2 including a measure of threat-biased interpretation.

A prospective investigation of protective factors for moral injury and psychiatric symptomatology among Israeli combatants: A Latent Class Analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: In this prospective study, we examined pre-enlistment characteristics and pre-deployment protective factors of exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) among Israeli active-duty combatants, as well as psychiatric symptomatology outcomes of exposure. METHODS: A sample of 335 active-duty Israeli combatants participated in a 2.5-year prospective study with three waves of measurements (T1: 12 months before enlistment, T2: 6 months following enlistment- pre deployment, and T3: 18 months following enlistment- post deployment). Can words be worse than stones? Understanding distressing social events and their relationship with social anxiety.

Research on the relationship between distressing social events and social anxiety has focused on antagonistic social events (i.e., peer victimization, cyberbullying) in adolescent samples. There is little research examining such relationships in adults, and less examining the relationship between non-antagonistic distressing social events (i.e., accidental embarrassing events) and social anxiety. The current investigation utilized a retrospective design to examine how different distressing social events may be associated with posttraumatic stress-like reactions, which may relate to social anxi

An investigation of the specificity and vividness of autobiographical memories and future events produced in response to disgust-related cues among individuals with eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: A deficiency in autobiographical memory functioning could be of relevance to the maintenance of an eating disorder (ED). Past research has found that people with EDs have difficulties in recalling specific details of autobiographical memories (AM) and in imagining future events. Our aim was to investigate AM and episodic future thinking (EFT) in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), binge-type eating disorders (Bulimia Nervosa or Binge Eating Disorders; BN/BED), and healthy controls (HCs) using negative cue words relevant to the experience of being disgusted and morally violated.

Contextual Factors Associated with Posttraumatic Stress Among Campus Sexual Assault Survivors.

Sexual assault has been repeatedly associated with multiple types of psychological distress, including posttraumatic stress. Post-assault outcomes are frequently linked to individual psychological processes (e.g. cognitions, behaviors) that are targeted in common psychotherapies, yet contextual factors (e.g. relationships, institutional factors) also play important roles in distress. Using a socioecological approach, this study examined how contextual factors such as institutional betrayal cross-sectionally predict posttraumatic stress in a sample of campus sexual assault survivors who enrolle
