Implicit and explicit memory biases in mixed anxiety-depression.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated and compared implicit and explicit memory biases in anxiety, depression and mixed anxiety-depression. METHOD: Outpatients who were either depressed only (n=18), anxious only (n=18) or mixed (anxious and depressed) (n=18) were compared to normal controls (n=18) on self-report measures and typical experimental tasks assessing memory biases. The implicit memory test was a word identification task and the explicit memory test was an incidental free recall with depression relevant, anxiety relevant, emotional positive and neutral words. RESULTS: The depressed g

Implicit and explicit memory processes in panic patients as reflected in behavioral and electrophysiological measures.

Implicit and explicit memory processes for panic-relevant and neutral word stimuli were examined in 16 panic patients and 16 healthy participants matched for sex, age, and education, using behavioral and electrophysiological measures. In the study phase, panic-relevant and neutral words were presented and the level of processing was varied by requiring either shallow (orthographic) or deeper (syntactic) processing. Implicit memory was tested with a lexical decision task, explicit memory with a recognition task. Panic patients and healthy participants did not differ in behavioral (response time

Childhood violence exposure and social information processing in young adults: Does relationship with the perpetrator matter?

Humans are generally biased to show implicit favoritism for in-group over out-group members, but developmental experiences may alter this process in important ways. Prior work has elucidated associations of family (i.e., in-group) violence exposure in childhood with risk for internalizing symptoms through weakened implicit favoritism for novel in-group members. The present study probes whether childhood violence exposure influences implicit bias and psychopathology differentially depending on the participant's relationship with the perpetrator (i.e., in-group vs. out-group member) at the time

Approach and avoidance bias for thin-ideal and normal-weight body shapes in anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The two studies aimed to examine implicit affective evaluations of thin-ideal and normal-weight body shapes in women with anorexia nervosa (AN), taking identification with body shapes into account. METHOD: In study 1, approach-avoidance bias for thin-ideal and normal-weight bodies was assessed in 40 women with AN and 40 healthy women by using an Approach-Avoidance Task and female avatar bodies with a standard face as stimuli. In study 2, 39 women with AN and 38 healthy women underwent a similar task but identification with bodies was manipulated by presenting bodies once with the p

Implicit measures of alcohol approach and drinking identity in alcohol use disorder: A preregistered double-blind randomized trial with cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS).

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a severe and widespread mental disorder with a huge negative impact on the social, economic and health dimensions. The identification of risk factors for the development of AUD and for relapse in existing AUD are crucial for prevention and treatment approaches. Alcohol-related implicit associations have been shown to contribute to drinking and might partially explain sudden relapses. The aims of this study are to investigate implicit associations in abstinent AUD patients and to test whether cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) modulates implici

Implicit and explicit self-associations in bipolar disorder: a comparison with healthy controls and unipolar depressive disorder.

According to cognitive theory, negative self-schemas are involved in the occurrence of depression. Whereas implicit depressive self-associations have been found in unipolar depression, it is unknown whether impaired associations with regard to the self are also involved in Bipolar Disorder (BD). This study investigated whether a bias in self-associations is a characteristic of bipolar disorder and whether discrepancies between implicit and explicit self-evaluations may be relevant for understanding bipolar psychopathology. Implicit and explicit self-associations were assessed in patients with

The characteristics of the implicit body model of the trunk.

Knowing where the body is in space requires reference to a stored model of the size and shape of body parts, termed the body model. This study sought to investigate the characteristics of the implicit body model of the trunk by assessing the position sense of midline and lateral body landmarks. Sixty-nine healthy participants localised midline and lateral body landmarks on their thorax, waist and hips, with perceived positions of these landmarks compared to actual positions. This study demonstrates evidence of a significant distortion of the implicit body model of the trunk, presenting as a sq

Implicit and explicit emotional memory recall in anxiety and depression: Role of basolateral amygdala and cortisol-norepinephrine interaction.

Anxiety and depression are linked to both explicit and implicit memory biases, which are defined as the tendency to preferentially recall emotionally negative information at conscious and subconscious levels, respectively. Functional connectivity (FC) of the basolateral amygdala (BLA) and related stress hormones (i.e., cortisol and norepinephrine) are purportedly implicated in these biases. However, previous findings on memory biases in anxiety and depression have been inconsistent, likely due to their symptomatic complications. Therefore, the underlying neurobiological mechanism remains uncle

Visual artificial grammar learning in dyslexia: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Literacy impairments in dyslexia have been hypothesized to be (partly) due to an implicit learning deficit. However, studies of implicit visual artificial grammar learning (AGL) have often yielded null results. AIMS: The aim of this study is to weigh the evidence collected thus far by performing a meta-analysis of studies on implicit visual AGL in dyslexia. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Thirteen studies were selected through a systematic literature search, representing data from 255 participants with dyslexia and 292 control participants (mean age range: 8.5-36.8 years old). RESULTS:

Facing prejudice: implicit prejudice and the perception of facial threat.

We propose that social attitudes, and in particular implicit prejudice, bias people's perceptions of the facial emotion displayed by others. To test this hypothesis, we employed a facial emotion change-detection task in which European American participants detected the offset (Study 1) or onset (Study 2) of facial anger in both Black and White targets. Higher implicit (but not explicit) prejudice was associated with a greater readiness to perceive anger in Black faces, but neither explicit nor implicit prejudice predicted anger perceptions regarding similar White faces. This pattern indicates

Assessing unintentional creation of bias against men who have sex with men as a function of exposure to blood donor screening questionnaire: A national randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Canadian Blood Services (CBS) screens donors based on group status (e.g., men who have sex with men, MSM) instead of specific, high-risk sexual practices (e.g., occurrence of condomless sex). The MSM screening question is embedded in a cluster of questions about stigmatized attributes such as history of imprisonment and illicit substance use. This juxtaposition of the "MSM question" and stigmatized attributes may unintentionally cause blood donors to perceive MSM more negatively. The aim of this research is to determine whether the CBS donor eligibility questionnaire generates nega

METHODS: In this single-center cross-sectional survey, 57 dentists were given a clinical scenario in combination with a patient's relevant clinical photographs and radiographs depicting either a Black or White patient presenting with a decayed tooth and associated symptoms of irreversible pulpitis. Explicit bias was measured through a questionnaire, which evaluated participants' course of treatment, strength of recommendation, and their perception of patients' dental cooperativeness. Implicit bias was evaluated through brief implicit associate tests. RESULTS: Recommendation for root canal tre

The impact of patients' hostile attribution bias on aggression in doctor-patient interactions.

BACKGROUND: Doctor-patient conflict is trending in social attention research. However, the existing literature rarely explores whether a patient's hostile attribution bias (HAB) in the doctor-patient interaction affects the aggression level against doctors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the relationship and mechanism between different types of HAB and aggression in patients. METHOD: In Study 1, 80 patients completed the word sentence association paradigm for hostility (WSAP-Hostility), and their explicit and implicit aggression levels were measured using the hot sauce paradigm and t

Bones, brains, and bias-neural crest cell contribution to craniofacial structure.

Implicit bias is a natural part of the human psyche and facial appearance is one of the first aspects that people notice when encountering new individuals. The cranial neural crest is key to formation of the facial structure as it is a developmentally transient and plastic cell population that contributes to the neural, muscular, cartilage and bone structures of the face and head. This remarkable cell population, within the context of genetic potential, can play a substantial role in determining how individuals' faces and heads form as well as contributing to anterior brain development. How hu

Images of the self and self-esteem: do positive self-images improve self-esteem in social anxiety?

Negative self-images play an important role in maintaining social anxiety disorder. We propose that these images represent the working self in a Self-Memory System that regulates retrieval of self-relevant information in particular situations. Self-esteem, one aspect of the working self, comprises explicit (conscious) and implicit (automatic) components. Implicit self-esteem reflects an automatic evaluative bias towards the self that is normally positive, but is reduced in socially anxious individuals. Forty-four high and 44 low socially anxious participants generated either a positive or a ne

The influence of skin colour on the experience of ownership in the rubber hand illusion.

Racial prejudice is associated with a fundamental distinction between "us" and "them"-a distinction linked to the perceived overlap between representations of the self and others. Implicit prejudice has been shown to reduce the intensity of White individuals' hand ownership sensation as induced by the Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI) with dark rubber hands. However, evidence for this link to implicit prejudice comes from self-report questionnaire data regarding the RHI. As an alternative, we assessed the onset time of the RHI. We hypothesized that onset time of the RHI would be higher for the black

Inequity and Women Physicians: Time to Change Millennia of Societal Beliefs.

Gender inequities date back thousands of years, with women expected to be caregivers at home and men expected to be leaders with occupations outside the home. In more recent history, women have trained in various professions, including medicine. Although the number of female physicians has risen consistently over the past several decades and half of US medical students now are women, gender inequities persist and are due, at least in part, to implicit (unconscious) biases held by doctors, other health care professionals, and patients and their families. Implicit biases negatively affect women

Personalizing and externalizing biases in deluded and depressed patients: are attributional biases a stable and specific characteristic of delusions?

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore whether explicit and implicit attributional styles of delusional patients were associated to their clinical state, and whether attributions biases are specific to delusional psychopathology or also appear in other disorders (i.e. depression). DESIGN AND METHODS: A cross-sectional design was used. The sample consisted of 136 participants (40 acute deluded participants, 25 remitted deluded participants, 35 depressed patients and 36 normal controls). "He was the one with the gun!" Associative memory for white and black faces seen with weapons.

Much research has found that implicit associations between Black male faces and aggression affect dispositional judgments and decision-making, but there have been few investigations into downstream effects on explicit episodic memory. The current experiment tested whether such implicit associations interact with explicit recognition memory using an associative memory paradigm in younger and older adults. Participants studied image pairs featuring faces (of Black or White males) alongside handheld objects (uncategorized, kitchenware, or weapons) and later were tested on their recognition memory

The neural processing of foreign-accented speech and its relationship to listener bias.

Foreign-accented speech often presents a challenging listening condition. In addition to deviations from the target speech norms related to the inexperience of the nonnative speaker, listener characteristics may play a role in determining intelligibility levels. We have previously shown that an implicit visual bias for associating East Asian faces and foreignness predicts the listeners' perceptual ability to process Korean-accented English audiovisual speech (Yi et al., 2013). Here, we examine the neural mechanism underlying the influence of listener bias to foreign faces on speech perception.
