Evolution of a successful community bicycle helmet campaign.

BACKGROUND: Bicycling injuries claim more than 900 lives each year in the United States, and the major cause of deaths is head injuries. Bicycle helmets can prevent head and brain injuries, yet helmet use rate remains low. Helmets are expensive, and their cost can be prohibitive. This study asks the question, "If bicycle helmets are made affordable, will they be worn?" METHODS: A multifaceted bicycle helmet campaign was begun in Grand Junction, Colorado, population 76,000, in 1992 and was evaluated after its first 2 years. The educational component involved presentations in local schools and

Head injuries after serious bicycle accidents.

Between 1987 and 1988 there were 47 serious or fatal injuries among bicycle riders in the city of Tel Aviv-Yafo (Serious injury was defined as being hospitalized for at least 24 hours). Collisions with vehicles, mostly cars, were responsible for about 80% of these cases. Two-thirds of the accidents occurred in adults aged 20 and over. We were able to trace the records of 24 of the 47 who were injured. Head trauma was the most common form of severe injury, occurring in 11 of the 24 cases. Two of the 11 died instantly and one died after 14 days of hospitalization, all from severe brain damage. E

Disability from bicycle-related injuries in children.

Bicycle crashes are a major cause of injuries in childhood. The goal of this study was to determine the long-term disabilities caused by bicycle-related injuries, and to clarify the long-term treatment priorities of injured children. Hospital records of 372 children (ages 2-15 yr, median 9 yr; 232 boys and 140 girls) admitted with bicycle-related injuries from 1979 through 1986 provided clinical information, social service visits, in-hospital and outpatient rehabilitative interventions, and physical status at discharge. More complete evaluations were made by contacting parents by telephone (82

[Bicycle accidents in the course of time in Münster, Germany : Analysis of changes in bicycle accidents over the past 10 years].

BACKGROUND: Bicycles have been a popular means of transport for many years. Especially in times of increased climate discussion, the bicycle has moved further into focus as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective means of transport. Bike lanes and roads are becoming more crowded and new means of transport such as pedelecs or e‑scooters are emerging. METHODS: A total of four studies by Münster University Hospital on bicycle accidents and the official accident statistics of the Münster police were compared. In the period from 2009 to 2019, three studies were conducted that considered all

Helmet wearing among users of a public bicycle-sharing program in the district of columbia and comparable riders on personal bicycles.

Bicycle-sharing programs are increasingly popular and have the potential to increase physical activity and decrease air pollution, but anecdotal evidence suggests helmet use is lower among users of bicycle-sharing programs than cyclists on private bicycles. We conducted a cross-sectional study to assess helmet use among users of a bicycle-sharing program in Washington, DC. Helmet use was significantly lower among cyclists on shared bicycles than private bicycles, highlighting a need for targeted helmet promotion activities.

Risks that induce bicycle accidents: Measurement and analysis of bicyclist behavior while going straight and turning right using a bicycle simulator.

In 2021, 69 % of those who died in Japan while riding a bicycle were of an older age. Preventing such accidents is an important issue because older bicyclists are more likely to be fatally injured in an accident. We developed a bicycle simulator that can safely simulate dangerous traffic environments by combining VR technology, motion capture technology, and various sensors to investigate the driving behavior of bicyclists who are involved in accidents. The simulator measures operating data such as floor reaction force, wheel rotation angle, brake lever displacement, position and posture of mo

Cranio-cervical and traumatic brain injury patterns-do they differ between electric bicycle, bicycle, and motorcycle-induced accidents?

PURPOSE: With the growing technical options of power transmission and energy-saving options in electric drives, the number of E-bike-related accidents especially in an elderly population has increased. The aim of the current study was to compare if the increased velocity in comparison to conventional bikes translates into different injury patterns in the cranio-cervical and head region. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed in patients admitted to our level one trauma center between 2009 and 2019 after being involved in an accident with either an E-bike, bicycle, or motorcycle a

Road Injuries Associated With Cellular Phone Use While Walking or Riding a Bicycle or an Electric Bicycle: A Case-Crossover Study.

Vulnerable road users (pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists) account for an increasing proportion of traffic injuries. We used a case-crossover study design to examine the association between cell-phone usage and traffic injuries among pedestrians, bicyclists, and electric bicycle riders during the course of their travel. We studied 643 pedestrians, bike riders, and electric bike riders aged 10-35 years who were involved in a road injury, visited the emergency department in one of the 3 hospitals in Shanghai, China, in 2019, and owned a cell phone. Half of the participants (n = 323; 50.2

One single-person bicycling enhances interpersonal cooperation via increasing interpersonal neural synchronization in left frontal cortex.

Previous findings have shown a strong relationship between sports and interpersonal cooperative behavior. Physical activity is the basic form of sport. In this study, we investigated the effect of physical activity on interpersonal cooperative behavior and its inter-brain correlates. Eighty college students were recruited and randomly divided into the experimental or control group (20 dyads per each). The experimental group performed a 30-min of moderate intensity single-person cycling exercise, while the control group performed a 30-min single-person sitting. Interpersonal cooperative behavio

Daily Bicycling in Older Adults May be Effective to Reduce Fall Risks-A Case-Control Study.

Older adults gain many health benefits from riding bicycles regularly. We aimed to explore whether older persons who ride bicycles regularly have better balance than controls. Balance control and voluntary stepping were assessed in 20 older adults aged 65-85 years who live in an agricultural community village and who ride bicycles regularly, and 30 age- and gender-matched nonbicycle riders (NBR). Self-reported function and fear of fall were also assessed. Bicycle riders (BR) showed significantly better balance, faster voluntary stepping, and better self-reported advanced lower-extremity functi

Bicyclic Basic Merbarone Analogues as Antiproliferative Agents.

Pyrimido-pyrimidine derivatives have been developed as rigid merbarone analogues. In a previous study, these compounds showed potent antiproliferative activity and efficiently inhibited topoisomerase IIα. To further extend the structure-activity relationships on pyrimido-pyrimidines, a novel series of analogues was synthesized by a two-step procedure. Analogues 3-6 bear small alky groups at positions 1 and 3 of the pyrimido-pyrimidine scaffold whereas at position 6a (4-chloro)phenyl substituent was inserted. The basic side chains introduced at position 7 were selected on the basis of the previ

Pseudoaneurysm of the Radial Artery After a Bicycle Fall.

We report a case of a 64-year-old man who developed a painful pulsatile mass in the distal forearm after a bicycle fall with fracture of the wrist. Ultrasonography confirmed a 2.5-cm large pseudoaneurysm of the radial artery. The patient underwent surgical exploration. The pseudoaneurysm was resected and the defect in the arterial wall was reconstructed with an autologous saphenous vein patch. We suggest that the double arterial supply of the hand should be preserved whenever possible.
