INTRODUCTION: Environmental exposures can contribute both benefits and risks to human health. Maternal exposure to green space has been associated with improvements in birthweight, among other birth outcomes. Newer measures of green space have been developed, which allows for an exploration of the effect of different ground covers (green, dry and bare earth), as well as measures of biodiversity. This study explores the association of these novel green space measures with birthweight in a large birth cohort in Queensland, Australia.
METHODS: Birthweight was acquired from the routine health rec

The aim of the present study was to obtain insights into the relationship between the chemical (salt content and pH) and physico-mechanical (humidity and compressive strength) properties of mineral-based materials from historic buildings with salt efflorescence and the growth and biodiversity of halophilic microorganisms. Samples were mainly characterized by pH 6.5-8.5 and a moisture content of between 0.12 and 3.3%. Significant variations were also found in the salt content (sulfates, chlorides, and nitrates) of the materials. An SEM/EDS analysis of material surfaces revealed the presence of

Plant and animal biodiversity are essential to ecosystem health and can provide benefits to humans ranging from aesthetics to maintaining air quality. Although the importance of biodiversity to ecology and conservation biology is obvious, such measures have not been applied to strains of an invasive bacterium found in human tissues during infection. In this study, we compared the strain biodiversity of Borrelia burgdorferi found in tick populations with that found in skin, blood, synovial fluid or cerebrospinal fluid of Lyme disease patients. The biodiversity of B. burgdorferi strains is signi

Trematode communities in populations of estuarine snails can reflect surrounding animal diversity, abundance, and trophic interactions. We know less about the potential for trematodes to serve as bioindicators in other habitats. Here, we reanalyze data from 2 published studies concerning trematodes, 1 in the Chilean rocky intertidal zone and the other from the East African rift lake, Lake Tanganyika. Our analyses indicate that trematodes are more common in protected areas and that in both habitats they are directly and positively related to surrounding host abundance. This further supports the

Seven donkeys (Equus asinus) from North-West and Mpumalanga Provinces in South Africa were examined at necropsy. Quantitative samples were collected from the gastrointestinal tract for recovery of helminth parasites from the stomach, small intestine, cecum, ventral colon, dorsal colon, descending colon, and cranial mesenteric artery. Fifteen genera and 29 species of helminths were identified comprising 27 species of nematodes in the Ascarididae, Atractidae, Habronematidae, Onchocercidae, Oxyuridae, and Strongylidae; 1 species of cestode in the Anoplocephalidae; and 1 species of trematode in th

Adopting plant-based diets can mitigate biodiversity loss by reducing the demand for land required for feed and livestock. Yet, most assessments rely on hypothetical dietary scenarios that potentially overestimate biodiversity gains. We conducted a large-scale consumer survey across three countries (NLD, GBR, and USA) and estimated the biodiversity footprints of current and intended future diets using the loss of mean species abundance (MSA-loss) and the loss of global species richness (RSR-loss) as indicators. Over half of the respondents expressed no intention to reduce meat or dairy consump

Capacities satisfying the antibuoyancy condition can be used to define Choquet integrals that adhere to the Pigou-Dalton or progressive transfers principle. As well as being a key concept in economics, where the principle underlies measures of welfare and wealth inequality, it has also often been adopted in ecology for defining indices related to species diversity. The point of difference for the Choquet integral in this setting is that it can also incorporate the differing importances of inputs and groups of inputs-not just whether they are high or low relative to the others. It makes it poss

Riparian forests buffer stream ecosystems from intensive land use. However, with ongoing land-use changes, riparian forests often remain as isolated fragments. Despite this, the relevance of isolated forest fragments in deforested landscapes remains unclear. We evaluated how downstream forest fragments can buffer the effects of upstream deforestation and whether upstream forest fragments can mitigate the impacts of downstream deforestation on abiotic conditions, biodiversity, and stream functioning. Additionally, we assessed how subsidized leaf litter of varied quality and diversity influences

As agricultural intensification expands globally, there is an increasing concern about the impact of food production on global biodiversity. Biodiversity decline is problematic as species provide a wealth of benefits, including pollination, soil fertility, and protection against pests, within agrosystems. Many countries, especially across Europe, have implemented incentives for farmers to introduce biodiversity-friendly land management practices, from building hedgerows to planting pollinator fields. Quantifying the impacts of these measures on biodiversity at the farm scale is technically cha

The hypothetical link between a reduction in biodiversity and increased zoonotic diseases remains debatable. We tested this by utilising remote vegetation density and protected areas (PAs) as proxies for biodiversity and examined their relationship with triatomine richness and occupancy. Triatomine bugs serve as the primary vector for Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. Although no link was found between triatomine species richness and vegetation, triatomine occupancy was lower within PAs than outside. Consequently, our findings suggest that reduced biodiversity may lead

BACKGROUND: The microbial composition of Sumbawa Horse Milk is influenced by various factors, including environmental elements that encompass geographical location, climate, and conditions specific to Sumbawa. This study aimed to determine the biodiversity and genetic diversity of the microbiome of Sumbawa Horse Milk, with an emphasis on yeast.
METHODS: The diversity and group of yeast isolates were evaluated by the sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) method using ME2F-EM15R (1) and ME2F-EM12R (2) primers. Molecular identification using 18 S rRNA primers was then carried out on nin

Biological collections are central in understanding and preserving life on Earth. In Brazil, the most representative collections are kept by natural history museums, whose primary focus is in invertebrates, vertebrates and vascular plants. Only a few institutions keep repositories in different kingdoms. The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), established in 1900, is a strategic public health institution of the Ministry of Health of Brazil. As such, Fiocruz is responsible for a wide range of activities, from basic research to the development and production of vaccines, drugs, reagents and diagno

Persistent application of pesticides often leads to accumulation in the environment and to the development of resistance in various organisms. These chemicals frequently degrade slowly and have the potential to bio-accumulate across the food chain and in top predators. Cancer and neuronal damage at genomic and proteomic levels have been linked to exposure to pesticides in humans. These negative effects encourage search for new sources of biopesticides that are more "environmentally-friendly" to the environment and human health. Many plant or fungal compounds have significant biological activit

Biodiversity loss and climate change secondary to human activities are now being associated with various adverse health effects. However, less attention is being paid to the effects of biodiversity loss on environmental and commensal (indigenous) microbiotas. Metagenomic and other studies of healthy and diseased individuals reveal that reduced biodiversity and alterations in the composition of the gut and skin microbiota are associated with various inflammatory conditions, including asthma, allergic and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), type1 diabetes, and obesity. Altered indigenous microbio

The current climate crisis, driven by greenhouse gas emissions, threatens global biodiversity, including that in marine ecosystems. However, projections for the western Atlantic Ocean that jointly quantify species richness and endemism while accounting for spatially biased and incomplete occurrence data remain limited. We addressed this gap across the western Atlantic from 57°S to 40°N, within 1500 km of the coast and on the continental shelf in waters shallower than 150 m. Using broad taxonomic coverage across vertebrates, invertebrates, and algae, we modeled biodiversity metrics directly as

The illegal wildlife trade (IWT) poses a major driver of global biodiversity loss and poses particular challenges in biodiversity-rich countries located along international trafficking routes. Nepal occupies a strategic position between two of the world's largest consumer markets for wildlife products, India and China, making Kathmandu Valley an important urban center for wildlife trafficking. Despite its strategic importance, long-term analyses of wildlife crime patterns in Kathmandu Valley remain limited. This study examines patterns and temporal trends in IWT and describes the demographic c

Earth's biodiversity is central to ecosystem health and resilience, providing essential functions and services. The Red Sea is a recognised marine biodiversity hotspot with high endemism and unique environmental conditions that support extensive but poorly resolved biodiversity. Here, we applied metagenomic analyses to sediment samples collected from coastal to deep-sea environments during the Red Sea Decade Expedition 2022 to characterise biodiversity across the web of life. From a single shotgun assay per sample, this approach simultaneously characterised the sediment microbiome, which ampli

Spatial variation in the magnitude and pace of climate change impacts means some species will be more affected than others. This includes those occurring within global biodiversity hotspots, regions with exceptional concentrations of endemic species that have often been shaped by long-term climatic stability. Disproportionate levels of human-induced pressure in these areas are threatening much of the biodiversity values that make these biodiversity hotspots exceptional. Southwest Western Australia is a highly fragmented temperate biodiversity hotspot experiencing rapid climate change and suppo

Estuarine seagrass meadows are ecologically and socio-economically valuable habitats, but face pressures from nutrient runoffs, drift algal accumulations, and introduced species. In the Swan River estuary (Western Australia), the introduced snail Batillaria australis has proliferated since initial observations in 1954. Here, we quantified the distribution and effects of B. australis on associated benthic communities. Field surveys revealed extremely high densities of B. australis in Halophila ovalis seagrass beds, increasing from 424 ± 28 m2 in 2006 to 1212 ± 122 m2 in 2011 but then decreasing

The S100B protein, known for its role in the central and enteric nervous systems, has recently been identified in dietary sources such as milk, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables. Given its potential interaction with the gut microbiota, this study explores the relationship between dietary intake of S100B and microbiota biodiversity across different diets. A comprehensive study was conducted, estimating S100B concentrations in 13 dietary patterns recommended in different countries. This is the first study to provide a comparative estimation of S100B exposure from the diet and to explore its
