Effects of the aeration mode on nitrogen removal in a compact constructed rapid infiltration system for advanced wastewater treatment.

The configuration and the effective operation of constructed rapid infiltration (CRI) systems are of significance for advanced wastewater treatment. In this study, a novel CRI system was developed with a compact structure consisting of two stages, i.e., oxic and anoxic stages. The CRI system was continuously operated for about 140 days under different aeration modes, i.e., tidal flow, continuous aeration, and intermittent aeration. Nitrogen removal was not desirable with tidal flow due to the insufficient oxygen supply in the oxic stage for nitrification, while continuous aeration could achiev

Effects of return sludge alkaline treatment on sludge reduction in laboratory-scale anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process.

Three alkaline treatments (pH 10, 11, and 12 for 1 h) were used to treat return sludge alone to reduce sludge production in laboratory-scale anaerobic-anoxic-oxic processes. After 99 days of operation, alkaline treatments at pH 10 and 11 led to accumulative excess sludge production and sludge yield reduction of 18.8%-31.7% and 14.7%-27.8%, respectively. However, alkaline treatment at pH 12 led to system breakdown because of sludge bulking. The alkaline treatment at pH 10 did not affect the chemical oxygen demand and NH4+-N removals of the system and sludge volume index (SVI) of aerobic activat

Coupled Effects of Nanomaterial-Modified Anodes on Temperature, pH Stability, and COD Removal in Microbial Fuel Cells.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a very promising method for wastewater treatment along with energy generation. But one of their biggest factors that affect their functioning is the environmental conditions such as temperature and pH, which regulate microbial activity and electron transfer as well. This work dealt with the effects of nanomaterial-modified anodes and exposure to temperature change, pH fluctuations, and voltage production of the single-chamber MFCs treating real domestic wastewater. Nine MFC systems, with a control one and eight nanomaterial-coated anodes (CNT, Al2O3, TiO2, Fe2O3

Investigation of hydrodynamic and mass transfer characteristics in a draft tube spouted bed bioreactor (DTSBBR) for simultaneous COD and nitrate removal.

Because interactions among microbial growth kinetics, biofilm formation, hydrodynamic conditions, and mass transfer constraints frequently limit process stability and scale-up, the simultaneous removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nitrate from wastewater remains a significant challenge in biological treatment systems. The hydrodynamic and mass transfer characteristics of a Draft Tube Spouted Bed Bioreactor (DTSBBR) were examined for the simultaneous removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nitrate from synthetic wastewater under different operating parameters. In a biofilm-assisted r

Remediation of COD-Contaminated Groundwater by Coupled Electro-Fenton and Groundwater Circulation Well: An Experimental Study.

Groundwater circulation well (GCW) technology and electro-Fenton (EF) technology offer promising prospects for groundwater remediation due to their high efficiency in removing volatile organic compounds and their advantage of causing no secondary pollution. In this study, chemical oxygen demand (COD) was selected as the target contaminant to investigate the remediation performance of the EF coupled with GCW technology. The results indicate that the optimal COD removal was achieved at an applied voltage of 30 V, as higher voltages facilitate the accelerated generation of ·OH radicals, thereby e

Hematite-facilitated anaerobic oxidation of organics: Novel strategy to alleviate bioclogging in constructed wetlands.

Bioclogging from organic accumulation significantly limits efficiency and longevity of constructed wetlands (CWs). In this study, hematite was introduced to enhance the oxidation of organics by dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR). Compared to gravel CWs (G-CWs), hematite CWs (H-CWs) enhanced the removal of COD, ammonium, and phosphate by 12 %, 46 %, and 72 %, while reducing CH4 and N2O emissions by 69 % and 36 %. The increase in extracellular polymers on G-CWs substrate surface was 5.96 times of H-CWs. This increase was the main reason for the significant reductions in porosity and hydraulic co

Performance study of microbial fuel cell stack system for treating fine chemical wastewater.

This study developed a stacked anaerobic fluidized bed microbial fuel cell (SAFB-MFC) system for treating refractory fine chemical wastewater containing high concentrations of benzene compounds, while simultaneously generating electricity. The system integrated 45 air-cathode MFC units within a shared anode chamber using a three-dimensional layout, achieving high integration density. Experimental results demonstrated that the total power output increased linearly with the number of connected units, peaking when all are connected. Units in the middle and upper sections exhibited superior perfor

Effective organic matter removal via bio-adsorption prior to anammox process and utilization of carbon-rich sludge.

Excessive organic matter in the anaerobic ammonia oxidation (Anammox) leads to the growth of a large number of heterotrophic bacteria, which disrupts the anaerobic ammonia oxidation. The adsorption-anaerobic ammonia oxidation process can effectively reduce excessive organic matter, capturing it instead of consuming it, which is a sustainable development technology. In this study, utilizing the excellent adsorption performance of aerobic granular sludge (AGS), an adsorption-regeneration process was employed to remove organic matter at the front end of the Anammox process through bio-adsorption

Performance of a haloalkaliphilic bioreactor and bacterial community shifts under different COD/SO₄²⁻ ratios and hydraulic retention times.

Sulfur dioxide from flue gas was converted into sulfate after the absorption of alkaline solutions. Haloalkaliphilic microorganisms have been used in reducing sulfate to decrease expenses and avoid sulfide inhibition. The effects of different COD/SO4(2-) ratios and hydraulic retention times (HRTs) on the sulfate removal efficiency and bacterial community were investigated in model experiments. Ethanol showed better performance as an electron donor than lactate. The optimum COD/SO4(2-) ratio and HRT were 4.0 and 18 h, respectively, with respective sulfate removal efficiency and rate of 97.8 ± 1

Brewery wastewater treatment using MBR coupled with nanofiltration or electrodialysis: biomass acclimation and treatment efficiency.

Breweries release significant amounts of wastewater loaded with various organic and mineral materials. Prior studies of membrane bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment have been conducted with very little interest granted to the conditions of biomass acclimation. This study displays biomass behavior during brewery wastewater treatment by an aerobic MBR. In addition, nanofiltration and electrodialysis have been studied as potential post-treatment to decrease mineral concentrations and permit further water reuse for agriculture. An anoxic/aerobic laboratory MBR, associated with a flat sulfonated

Treatment of waste activated sludge and the enhancement mechanism for electron transfer in an osmotic microbial fuel cell.

The osmotic microbial fuel cell (OsMFC) is a novel technology that can achieve electricity generation and water recovery while stabilizing and dewatering waste activated sludge (WAS). By examining electricity generation, WAS stabilization, microbial community shifts, meta-transcriptomic changes, and the enhancement mechanism of electron transfer, this study demonstrated significant advantages of an OsMFC in treating WAS over a conventional microbial fuel cell (MFC). Compared with typical MFCs, the OsMFC performed better in terms of maximum power density (260 mW·m⁻2), removal of total chemical

Optimization of immobilized activated sludge performance in electro-sprayed matrices for treatment of cellulose industry wastewater.

Today, the abundant use of cellulose industry products has led to an increase in production and, as a result, an increase in the volume of water consumed by this industry. On the other hand, the high volumetric flow rate of produced wastewater, chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids and high turbidity of these wastewaters have caused many problems. In recent years, various methods, including physical, chemical and biological, have been used for wastewater treatment. In this study, firstly, the efficiency of the activated sludge collected from cellulose wastewater was investigated in fr

Influence of infrared light illumination on biogas production and microbial communities in anaerobic digestion of primary sludge and fruit and vegetable waste.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a widely adopted technology for treating various waste streams, offering environmental benefits and carbon-neutral energy production in wastewater treatment plants. While most previous studies have focused on optimizing methane production under dark conditions, the impact of infrared (IR) light on AD performance remains largely underexplored. This study investigates the effect of IR light on the AD of primary sludge (PS) and fruit and vegetable waste (FVW). IR illumination substantially improved reduction of total chemical oxygen demand and volatile solids in PS mon

Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticle enhanced microwave pretreatment for anaerobic digestion of meat industry sludge.

Our study investigates the effects of iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles combined microwave pretreatment on the anaerobic digestibility and soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) of meat industry sludge. One of our main objectives was to see whether the different microwave-based pretreatment procedures can enhance biogas production by improving the biological availability of organic compounds. Results demonstrated that combining microwave irradiation with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles considerably increased SCOD (enhancement ratio was above 1.5), the rate of specific biogas production, and th

Organic media-based two-stage traditional and electrode-integrated tidal flow wetlands to treat landfill leachate: Influence of aeration strategy and plants.

Landfill leachate treatment employing normal and electrode-integrated constructed wetlands is difficult due to the presence of significant amounts of organic compounds, which frequently impede the progression of microbial-based aerobic pollutant removal pathways. As a result, this study examines the effect of supplementary air availability via intermittent and continuous aeration strategies in improving organic, nutrient, and coliform removals of the unplanted, planted (normal and electrode-integrated) two-stage tidal flow constructed wetlands designed to treat landfill leachate. The construct

Prediction the performance of multistage moving bed biological process using artificial neural network (ANN).

Complexity, uncertainty, and high dynamic nature of nutrient removal through biological processes (BPs) makes it difficult to model and control these processes, forcing designers to rely on approximations, probabilities, and assumptions. To cope with this difficult task and perform an effective and well-controlled BP operation, an artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm was developed to simulate, model, and control a three-stage (anaerobic/anoxic and MBBR) enhanced nutrient removal biological process (ENR-BP) challenging real wastewater. The effect of surface area loading rate (SALR), organi
