BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe mental illness. BD often coexists with borderline personality disorders, making the condition more complex.
AIM: To explore the differences in cognitive impairment between patients with BD and those with BD comorbid with borderline personality disorder.
METHODS: Eighty patients with BD and comorbid borderline personality disorder and 80 patients with BD alone were included in groups A and B, respectively, and 80 healthy volunteers were included as controls. Cognitive function in each group was evaluated using the Chinese version of the repeatable

Bipolar disorder is a chronic, episodic mood illness characterized by recurrent oscillations between mania, depression, and euthymia, affecting an estimated 2.4% of the global population. This pictorial review explores its pathophysiology through the case of a young individual presenting with a first manic episode with psychotic features. We examine the convergence of genetic loading (∼70-90% heritability), neurodevelopmental vulnerability, and environmental precipitants-including sleep restriction and antidepressant exposure-in unmasking this individual's illness. We review interconnected pat

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe mood disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of mania and depression, and it is prone to delayed diagnosis, which can lead to worsened outcomes, including more frequent mood episodes, greater functional impairment, and comorbidities. Early diagnosis of BD remains a significant challenge, although recent advances offer promising insights, such as research in molecular biomarkers, neuroimaging, exosomes, genetics, and epigenetics. This mini-review highlights their potential for providing earlier, more accurate identification of BD and discusses the underlyi

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic condition with serious consequences on the health and functionality of patients who suffer from it, with a high heritability and segregation, and aprevalence of between 1% and 2%. Neuropsychological deficits have been implicated as a very important issue related to BD prognosis, so a review was conducted of these deficits, the related factors and their functional consequences. It has been determined that the presence of neuropsychological deficits can vary in patients with BD according to their mood state, with a great influence of depressive symptoms on the

OBJECTIVES: It has been suggested that agitated depression (AD) is a common, severe feature in bipolar disorder. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of AD and investigate whether presence of AD was associated with episodic and lifetime clinical features in a large well-characterized bipolar disorder sample.
METHOD: The prevalence of agitation, based on semi-structured interview and medical case-notes, in the most severe depressive episode was estimated in 2925 individuals with DSM-IV bipolar disorder recruited into the UK Bipolar Disorder Research Network. Predictors of agitation were ascerta

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic psychiatric illness which, among other things, is characterized by cerebral dysfunctions, cognitive disorders and sleep disturbances. The neurobiological basis of these processes remains unclear. In recent years, studies have focused on the role of immune-inflammatory mechanisms induced by the tryptophan metabolism pathway (TRP) and the kynurenine pathway (KYN). Emerging data correlates TRP and KYN metabolites with BD's pathophysiology and course. The purpose of this review is to search the available data on the involvement of KYN's pathway in the pathophysio

OBJECTIVE: Night eating syndrome (NES) involves reduced feeding during the day and evening hyperphagia sometimes accompanied by frequent nocturnal awakenings with conscious episodes of compulsive ingestion of food. Previously, NES has not been evaluated in bipolar disorder (BD). The objective of this study was to identify NES in euthymic BD patients.
PATIENTS/METHODS: Eighty BD patients and 40 controls were examined using the Night Eating Questionnaire, Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression and Anxiety, Young Mania Rating Scale, Functioning Assessment Short-Test and International Physical Acti

BACKGROUND: Epigenetic mechanisms have been suggested to play a key role in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD), among which microRNAs (miRNAs) may be of particular significance according to recent studies. We aimed to summarize miRNA studies in BD to identify consistent findings, limitations, and future directions of this emerging field.
METHODS: We performed a comprehensive search on PUBMED and Medline for studies investigating an association between BD and miRNAs. The included studies report miRNA alterations in postmortem brain tissues and in the periphery, cell culture and precl

Tobacco use in mental health in general and bipolar disorder in particular remains disproportionally common, despite declining smoking rates in the community. Furthermore, interactions between tobacco use and mental health have been shown, indicating the outcomes for those with mental health disorders are impacted by tobacco use. Factors need to be explored and addressed to improve outcomes for those with these disorders and target specific interventions for people with psychiatric illness to cease tobacco smoking. In the context of bipolar disorder, this review explores; the effects of tobacc

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar affective disorder runs a natural course of frequent relapses and recurrences. Despite significant strides in the pharmacological treatment of bipolar disorder, most bipolar patients cannot be treated only by drugs. The limitations of using medication alone in symptomatic, relapse prevention, and satisfaction/quality of life terms have long prompted interest in wider forms of management. One of the promising way how to enhance remission seems to be combination of pharmacotherapy and psychoeducation.
METHODS: Studies were identified through PUBMED, Web of Science and Scopus

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are common in patients with bipolar disorder and show considerable influence on the course of the disease and response to treatment.
METHOD: We conducted a series of literature searches using key words, such as bipolar disorder and anxiety disorders, as items in indexed fields. The studies were obtained through a MEDLINE search from 1970 to 2012. We also examined additional studies cited in articles from these searches or our previous studies.
RESULTS: Several studies have shown poorer outcomes for patients with bipolar and comorbid anxiety disorders. Some studi

OBJECTIVE: As coping responses have the capacity to distinctly influence the illness course in affective disorders, they form targets for psychological intervention. Beneficial effects have been reported for interventions incorporating adaptive coping in bipolar disorder. Identification of differential coping preferences in bipolar disorder sub-types has etiological and clinical implications. As most studies to date have focused exclusively on bipolar I disorder, the current study examines coping profiles in those with a bipolar I or II disorder, contrasted with unipolar depressive and healthy

OBJECTIVE: There has been little investigation of early trauma in bipolar disorder despite evidence that stress impacts on the course of this illness. We aimed to compare the rates of childhood trauma in adults with bipolar disorder to a healthy control group, and to investigate the impact of childhood trauma on the clinical course of bipolar disorder.
METHODS: Retrospective assessment of childhood trauma was conducted using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) in 60 outpatients with bipolar disorder being treated for a depressive episode and 55 control participants across two centres in

About 1 in 100 people has bipolar disorder (manic depression) at some point in their lives.(1) Associated mood swings of depression and mania can be both unpleasant and destructive.(2) It is advised to start medical treatment early, and traditionally this has involved the use of mood stabilisers, antipsychotics and antidepressants.(2) ▾Asenapine (Sycrest - Lundbeck) is a new sublingual antipsychotic drug, licensed for the treatment of moderate to severe manic episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults.(3) Here we review the evidence and practical implications associated with the use

Bipolar disorder is characterized by recurrent episodes of mania and depression and affects about 1% of the adult population. The condition can have a major impact on an individual's ability to function and is associated with a long-term risk of suicide. In this paper, we report on the use of self-rated mood data to forecast the next week's depression ratings. The data used in the study have been collected using SMS text messaging and comprises one time series of approximately weekly mood ratings for each patient. We find a wide variation between series: some exhibit a large change in mean ove

Bipolar II disorder (BP II) disorder was recognized as a distinct subtype in the DSM-IV classification. DSM-IV criteria for BP II require the presence or history of one or more major depressive episode, plus at least one hypomanic episode, which, by definition, must last for at least 4 days. Various studies found distinct patterns of symptoms and familial inheritance for BP II disorder. BP II is commonly underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Making an early and accurate diagnosis of BP II is utmost importance in the management of BP II disorder. The clinician should have this diagnosis in mind when

Bipolar disorder (BD) is one of the most potentially severe mental disorders. Literature data indicate that despite the current available treatments, a large proportion of patients do not achieve complete remission, with consequent residual symptoms and chronic impairment. We carried out a comprehensive review of new pharmacologic treatments for BD. Even though the core treatment of BD likely will not likely undergo substantial changes over the next few years, many promising results with respect to new augmentation strategies were identified. New treatments for bipolar depression and for BD-re
